Best dance number in a film musical?

Ok - so a very specific question!
But watching Jesus Christ Superstar (the 70s film) and I have to nominate this:

Simon Zealotes

It's just got so much energy and passion.

I can think of some others - but am sure people will nominate them. Maybe something from A Chorus Line?

LOVING this thread!!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/05/2020 22:49

Santa Fe - not full on 'dancey' but I like the use of the train in the choregraphy.

RomaineCalm · 03/05/2020 22:51

I don't think anyone has had my favourite yet - 'Shall we dance' from the original film of King and I.

Easy Street, sparksey?

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 03/05/2020 22:52

@Sparkesy definitely “We could have been anything that we wanted to be”. It’s so understated, and the boys have brilliant poker faces.

I love “I’m dancin’!”

BrandyandBabycham · 03/05/2020 22:52

I had such a crush on Gene Kelly!

TudoBem · 03/05/2020 22:55

Crazy, Cool from West Side Story

Moses Supposes from Singin in the Rain

Prehistoric Man from On The Town

Top Hat, White Tie and Tails from Top Hat

Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting in Rocketman.

Puttin' on the Ritz in Young Frankenstein this makes me howl with laughter every time I see it. DH just gives me side eye.

Loving loads of these.

How about 'Twist It' from The Blues Brothers? Always gets me out of my seat.... uk.search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&p=twist+it+the+blues+brotgers

Also the audition scene from Flash Dance.

Chris Penn/Willard trying to perfect his moves in Footloose definitely.

Also Step in time from Mary Poppins

User721 · 03/05/2020 23:06

'Who will buy' from Oliver

GlitterDragon · 03/05/2020 23:08

Some fab suggestions, but I’d go with Rhythm of Life from Sweet Charity

TudoBem · 03/05/2020 23:09

@GlitterDragon yes! Fabulous routine.

PerspicaciaTick · 03/05/2020 23:09

Sparksey - Easy Street? Good call!

Comefromaway · 03/05/2020 23:13

If you count staged musical filmed for the cinema then King of New York from Newsies.

Otherwise 42nd Street or West Side Story.

Peonyinbloom · 03/05/2020 23:21

Sparksey Miss Hannigan is one of the greatest characters in film in the old Annie version. She steals every scene, and is just fabulous. I adore her. Easy street is hilarious, but Little Girls is my fav.

Forgot about about Newsies, it's a pity it never came here

NaomiFromMilkShake · 03/05/2020 23:26

@AdaColeman

I bloody love you.

Was just about to post the same, here it is in all its glory.

NaomiFromMilkShake · 03/05/2020 23:29

Ignore that, it is not what Youtube showed me at first, however I loved it the first time I saw it and still do.

user49er · 03/05/2020 23:34

The final scene from The Artist is fantastic

Moonmelodies · 03/05/2020 23:34

What about the sequence by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1941 Hellzapoppin' movie

PersonaNonGarter · 03/05/2020 23:34

Dreamgirls - Steppin to the Badside

Everyone is amazing. Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, et all. Incredible choreography. Total sensation.

Arseit · 03/05/2020 23:36

@Comefromaway - I was also going to say 42nd Street, the final number. You can’t beat a big tap number.

36degrees · 03/05/2020 23:38

I really like the Ewan McGregor Beyond The Sea sequence in A Life Less Ordinary. Was that a musical? I don't remember much about the actual film now but I thought that bit was clever.

BackforGood · 03/05/2020 23:58

Fantastic thread @chomalungma Thank you Smile

West Side Story is my favourite all time musical - I've seen it in theatres over the decades and also Youth productions, ALL of which have been fab, but I really dislike the film. the ballet is just so out of sync with the storyline.

So many great suggestions here - I love all the old MGM Musicals too.

Is there a Musicals channel? There should be if not.
