Best dance number in a film musical?

Ok - so a very specific question!
But watching Jesus Christ Superstar (the 70s film) and I have to nominate this:

Simon Zealotes

It's just got so much energy and passion.

I can think of some others - but am sure people will nominate them. Maybe something from A Chorus Line?

Love Consider Yourself.

It's got so many people in - I can't imagine how they choreographed all that.

They don't make film musicals like that anymore Grin

Can’t link to it but have a look at Phil’s playlist Footloose 2 on face book.

Astonishing mix of dances from musicals .

Loving these, consider them all 'liked' Smile

PerspicaciaTick · 03/05/2020 22:28

I have two - both from Moulin Rouge.
The CanCan for the chaos and energy.
The Tango because it is so sudden and so intimate.

Another vote for the barn raising scene in 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. Just amazing

AdaColeman · 03/05/2020 22:29

The finale of “A Chorus Line”!

Though lots of the previously mentioned are fab too!

ANoiseAnnoys · 03/05/2020 22:33

I love: the end party scene in Footloose (but I love all the dancing in this tbh)
Saturday night fever (John Travolta’s “you should be dancing“ scene - I SO wish I could do that Russian squat move!)
Agree with pp America from west side story is up there
I also love the “good mornin’” routine from singing in the rain

Funniest has to be the opening credits to Austin Powers!

chomalungma · 03/05/2020 22:33

Another one

Annie - Hard Knock Life (again the original film)

Those girls must have had fun doing that

Another vote for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and the barn raising dance fight!

Also Fred and Ginger Cheek to Cheek is stunning (as are all their dances!)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/05/2020 22:35

Yep, the barn raising in SBFSB.

And All I Owe Iowa from State Fair. I love the concentric circles and the way it gets bigger and bigger and faster and faster.

NaturalBornWoman · 03/05/2020 22:36

So many of these are just fab. Love west side story, the fosse stuff, shall we dance, chorus line. I’d include I got rhythm from An American in Paris too.

PerspicaciaTick · 03/05/2020 22:38

And the soup kitchen in Bugsy Malone.

wowfudge · 03/05/2020 22:40

Another vote for America from West Side Story.

Sparkesy · 03/05/2020 22:40

I love the Chimney Sweep scene and Lamp Lighters scene in the two Mary Poppins films - they make me very happy - amazing in both films (and the Sweeps on stage for the Mary Poppins stage production was brilliant!)

PeskyRooks · 03/05/2020 22:41

Dick van dyke doing Me Old Bamboo in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Also him doing the Chimney sweep dance in Mary Poppins.
Pure cinematic perfection!

PeskyRooks · 03/05/2020 22:42

Wow the previous post wasn't there when I posted! Great minds Sparkesy!

Peonyinbloom · 03/05/2020 22:43

I love all the old MGM musicals, how to pick the best!
But Fred Astaire must have a mention surely? In this film he dances on the ceiling, and it’s so clever.
I saw a programme on him once and he was such a perfectionist, that you could put two takes beside each other and it would look like a mirror image of him dancing, he had perfected it so well that each tale was perfect, every time. Here
I will also mention the fabulous and gorgeous Gene Kelly dancing in a revolutionary new form at the time.Here.

Sparkesy · 03/05/2020 22:43

Yes Perspica! -love that in Bugsy Malone - and 'We Could've been anything that we wanted to be' song too!

Lightsabre · 03/05/2020 22:43

All of the numbers in A Chorus Line are great - same for West Side Story. I love Caberet too, especially the first few songs/routines. Also anything scored by Burt Bacharach or Stephen Sondheim.

Sparkesy · 03/05/2020 22:45

Is there a Musicals channel? There should be if not.

GuyFawkesDay · 03/05/2020 22:46

Gene Kelly either singing in the rain. Or tap dancing IN ROLLERSKATES.....gotta be up there!!

I'm also a fan of the Toot Sweets section of Chitty chitty bang bang.

nuttymomma · 03/05/2020 22:46

barn raising dance in seven brides

I love the dancing queen dance in mamma mia (first one)

Grease - born to hand jive!

Sparkesy · 03/05/2020 22:46

Just remembered the Annie one with Miss Hannigan, Rooster and girlfriend- that's brilliant in the film, when they find the necklace

MrFaceyRomford · 03/05/2020 22:47

Puttin' on the Ritz in Young Frankenstein.
