Baby Daniel?

I'm helping DSis look at baby names (at her request, I'm not being pushy) and was amazed to see Daniel is way up at the top of most popular boys names.

I have never met a Dan / Danny / Daniel under 30 and I work with the public and meet A LOT of people, never heard of anyone naming their new baby Daniel. Is it a regional thing? We're in the SW and it's all Caspian and Reuban around here.

How many have you met? Your sample size probably renders that insignificant.

CormoranStrike · 15/04/2020 12:03

I def considered it but it clashed with another name in the family.

The only one I know is eight years old.

Mucklowe · 15/04/2020 12:21

I love the name Daniel. It's still very popular in Jewish circles.

I have a primary school age Daniel. Some people call him Dan or Danny but I liked the fact he could choose it for himself when he gets older. (I prefer Danny!). We have an unusual surname so classic/simple first names are essential!

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 15/04/2020 12:22

It was one of the most popular names in the 90s when I had my children, and we know/have known lots over the years. I think it has now become slightly less popular, but still fairly common like Ben, Thomas or James, because it is a nice, classic name.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 15/04/2020 12:25

DSis likes it, but brother in law has declared it to be a Catholic name and isn't fussed. I hadn't realised biblical names were Catholic / Protestant? They are very atheist not anti Catholic BTW.

If anything it's a Jewish name, but most people won't choose it for any religious reason.

NC4Now · 15/04/2020 12:43

I know loads of Daniels, from my age (40s) to young children. I thought it was a bit of a timeless name, like James or Thomas.

NC4Now · 15/04/2020 12:44

Artie well, it’s biblical. If they are atheist, he might just mean that.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/04/2020 13:09

It's my DS2's middle name He's 22
Lovely name

UnfinishedSenten · 15/04/2020 13:41

I have a Daniel, he's 8. No reason in particular weren't even on my list until he was born and He just looked like a Daniel 🤷🏻‍♀️

TerribleCustomerCervix · 15/04/2020 13:47

Another in NI and Daniel is still very popular.

We’re not as adventurous with names here, so people tend to stick to the classics as opposed to Caspian or Atticus etc.

Lots of baby Matthews around here as well

Cecilia2016 · 15/04/2020 13:54

We have few children in our church called Daniel

Isadora2007 · 15/04/2020 14:00

I had a baby Daniel. He is 7 now. He gets callled Dan, Danny and daniel... I like how versatile it is. Although I think it’s quite a “meh” name in a good way that it won’t be strongly liked nor disliked. And it’s timeless.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/04/2020 14:25

I taught a good smattering of teenage Daniels through the 00s to mid-10s so it's not a name linked strongly to any one generation.
I can think of one of my friend's children aged about 6.
My DSs are both in girl heavy classes so out of 61 children only 23 are boys anyway Grin

If you like it, go for it. It's a well established, mainstream tradtional name so hard to go wrong on Smile
It also passes the easy spelling/pronounciation test Wink

Drogonssmile · 15/04/2020 14:54

I have a 6 year old Daniel and my youngest is at nursery with a 4 year old Daniel Smile

Drogonssmile · 15/04/2020 14:57

I believe it has Hebrew origins. We just chose it because we didn't like any other boys names. That was fun when we found out DS2 was on the way!

Heresme33 · 15/04/2020 15:03

Such a lovely name

Rubychard · 15/04/2020 15:43

NothingIsWrong · 15/04/2020 15:50

There are 2 in my Y2 daughters year group of 17...

laurely · 15/04/2020 16:07

I have a Daniel . I don’t think it’s dated . He goes by Dan with his friends

Emmapeeler1 · 15/04/2020 16:16

Daniel is lovely.

My Catholic mother doesn't consider old testament names to be particularly catholic. My DH is called it and his mum is Baptist. But I don't think it's really anything - just a classic name, which is slightly less common now because of all the Oscars. There's one in each of my kids' years at school. It's a bit like James in popularity - there will always be the odd handful.

However I do agree that every other person my DH's age is called it.

DrCoconut · 15/04/2020 16:20
