Baby Daniel?

I'm helping DSis look at baby names (at her request, I'm not being pushy) and was amazed to see Daniel is way up at the top of most popular boys names.

I have never met a Dan / Danny / Daniel under 30 and I work with the public and meet A LOT of people, never heard of anyone naming their new baby Daniel. Is it a regional thing? We're in the SW and it's all Caspian and Reuban around here.

@happymummy12345 he won’t really get the choice when his schoolmates decide to shorten it anyway. I have a name that can be shortened but then sounds like another name so I have to keep explaining my name is actually...as people get it wrong. It had never been my choice to shorten it.

NeverTrustASmilingCat · 15/04/2020 11:02

We have 5 year old twin girls, but Daniel was our top choice for if we had a boy.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/04/2020 11:03

they are ten a penny round here. three in one class at primary school , but they have gradually all left and are in secondary now.

It's a biblical name - they are classic name imho. I fail to see how it is dated in relation to names like Gary or Kevin.

HironsBirons · 15/04/2020 11:11

I look after a 5 year old Daniel. There’s 2 other Daniel’s in his nursery class alone

allaboardthesinkingship would love to hear what you find interesting as maybe others will dislike that and think its alittle off the wall weird and try hard. You cant please everyone op and nobody's opinion matters but yours and your dh's Smile

Interesting that most of you are saying oh yes I know a load of Daniels, they are teenagers... There seem to be very few new baby Daniels.

I love it and wish I'd used it, but it's not my turn now. DSis likes it, but brother in law has declared it to be a Catholic name and isn't fussed. I hadn't realised biblical names were Catholic / Protestant? They are very atheist not anti Catholic BTW.

Ds(12) two in his year
Ds(5) two in his school.

bluechameleon · 15/04/2020 11:15

I have ten children in my class and two of them are called Danny. We considered Daniel for DS1 but I got caught up in pronunciation issues - is it Danny-ell or Danny-ull or Dan-yull?

Equimum · 15/04/2020 11:16

There is a Daniel at school with my son, but his sister also has a name that was popular in the 80s. Other than him, I haven’t come across a young Daniel since I was at school.

wowfudge · 15/04/2020 11:17

I don't believe it is a Catholic name in England and I've no idea whether it is considered to be so in NI or Scotland. Chances are the Daniels he knows happen to be from Catholic families who have chosen a biblical name.

IDontLikeMondays88 · 15/04/2020 11:18

I know a Daniel who is 3

Emmagen · 15/04/2020 11:22

I'm SW too (just about, get the SW news on the TV but am in the very north of the area) and I know 3 preschool aged Daniels and one in reception. In fact it's the most popular name in the kids I know.

Thisismytimetoshine · 15/04/2020 11:24

It's a great name, love it.

Rememberallball · 15/04/2020 11:26

We have a nephew called Daniel who is 6

x2boys · 15/04/2020 11:30

I think of it like a classic name ,I liked it but dh vetoed it

Bluesheep8 · 15/04/2020 11:32

I think it's a lovely name. And it'll stand out amidst the sea of Reubens and Caspians in your area.

Bluesheep8 · 15/04/2020 11:34

Ha, Caspian Sea...just realised!

Katjolo · 15/04/2020 11:36

Gorgeous name

Batfinklestein · 15/04/2020 11:38

I don't think it's dated or has connotation of the 80s/90s, it a classic name.

PaddyF0dder · 15/04/2020 11:39

One of ours is Daniel. But he’s only a toddler, so he’s Danny.

It really suits him. He’s a cheeky, rascally scamp, which is exactly what a “Danny” should be.

And when he’s older he can go by Danny, or Dan, or Daniel. So it’s a nice, versatile, simple name.

Sally872 · 15/04/2020 11:40

I know a 10 year old and a 4 year old Daniel.

Midnightmusing · 15/04/2020 11:41

I’m 29 and Daniel was a pretty common name at school. I was in the south west.

Bluesheep8 · 15/04/2020 11:44

I also like the fact that there is more than one shortened version, so he can choose whether he wants Daniel, Dan, or Danny for himself when he's older.

SeriouslySoDoneIn · 15/04/2020 11:45

Every Daniel I ever met has been an absolute cunt.
