Baby Daniel?

I'm helping DSis look at baby names (at her request, I'm not being pushy) and was amazed to see Daniel is way up at the top of most popular boys names.

I have never met a Dan / Danny / Daniel under 30 and I work with the public and meet A LOT of people, never heard of anyone naming their new baby Daniel. Is it a regional thing? We're in the SW and it's all Caspian and Reuban around here.

@Likethebattle true but that doesn't mean I have to like it or encourage it at all. When he's old enough he can make his own decision but I will always encourage the use of his full name as long as possible.
My name is hyphenated and even as an adult my mum would still correct people who don't use the full version.

happymummy12345 · 15/04/2020 18:47

Plus why should his friends decode what name he uses?

krazipan · 15/04/2020 18:51

I know of 2 baby Daniels-both born in the past year.

@DrCoconut Smile. It's literally the only boys name we liked so it was an easy decision. We were set on it from when I was 7 months pregnant if we had a boy. (Couldn't agree on a girls name at all though

BasilDiffuser · 15/04/2020 19:20

I love the name Daniel. I do fancy someone with that name which I think makes a name more appealing?

Likethebattle · 15/04/2020 19:22

It’s not that his friends ‘decide’ they just start shortening it and that’s what people then know him as, like nicknames these things he just evolve.

ALemonyPea · 15/04/2020 19:25

I have one, fab name.

I worked at a catholic school, and there was at least one Daniel in every year from nursery.

autumnboys · 15/04/2020 19:29

I have a 10yo Daniel, also known as Dan. There are a few his age at Scouts, I know a few in their teens & tons my age (mid 40s). I think it’s a good name (obvs).

EveryLifeHasASoundtrack · 15/04/2020 19:37

It was definitely in the Top 10 boys names when my son was born in 2003. I know a couple of Daniels age 3 and 10. Classic and timeless I think.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/04/2020 19:38

I have a name which is very easily shortened. I can't stand any of the short forms of my name so I just refused to answer to them at school. My daughter did exactly the same. My son, however, decided for himself that he wanted to be known by the short form of his name, when he was about 7. His name, his decision.

Someonesayroadtrip · 15/04/2020 19:40

I have an 8 year old Daniel. All our names are very traditional. He is called anything from Daniel, Dan, Danny, to Dandelion 😂

Emmapeeler1 · 15/04/2020 19:58

DH's family call him Daniel. I do like it but find it funny as I have always known him as Dan. I deliberately chose a boy's name with a shortening I liked as they invariably find a way to shorten them! Though at six, DS definitely suits the long version better.

Zisforstripyoss · 15/04/2020 20:56

I don't know any child Daniels, but plenty of grown up Daniels, including my own brother. Lovely name.

bookmum08 · 15/04/2020 21:22

I know loads of Daniels in just about every different age groups.
If my daughter had been a boy she was going to be Daniel (she is almost 12).

OneKeyAtATime · 15/04/2020 21:25

I like it

mamaduckbone · 15/04/2020 21:54

My 32 year old nephew is Daniel, the youngest I know is 9. I haven't come across any little Daniels for a long time (teacher)

merryhouse · 15/04/2020 21:55

we were thinking of Daniel for our younger son (now 17) but our close friends used it for their son six months older.

Our older son had a schoolfriend called Daniel.

happymummy12345 · 16/04/2020 21:26

They will only shorten it if he wants them to. When he gets to the age he can decide if he doesn't want it shortened it's up to him to tell them not to

ritzbiscuits · 16/04/2020 21:33

My Dh is called Daniel, always called Dan. It's a lovely name, just not in vogue at the moment. I'd go for it.

MrFaceyRomford · 16/04/2020 22:18

I know of two in our area. One's me (60s) and one is a friend of my DGS (who's 6). There's a massive gap in the middle of non-Daniels.

CandyflossKid · 16/04/2020 23:10

I have an 18 year old Daniel/Danny/Dan
