Did anybody go grey at a young age?

The women in my family tend to go grey quite young. I didn't manage to get my hair done before lockdown and I've noticed a fair few greys coming through! I'm 30 in a couple of months.

Anyone else start going grey early?

Me. First greys at 19, by 28 I had a big white streak. At 38 I got bored of dying it and grew the dye out. Now at 47 I'm a white/silver fox Grin

Miffycat14 · 07/04/2020 13:30

Yes, I found my first grey hair at 15. Had to start dyeing it when I was 21. From about 35 I would have been totally grey if I let it grow through. Luckily I had my roots done a few days before the hairdressers closed, although it won't be long before the grey roots show. I am really not ready to embrace the grey, so I will have to buy a home hair dye.
My Mum also went grey very early, aged about 20 I think.

kleew1 · 07/04/2020 13:34

Eh yes. I'm 31 been grey for years and I am so grey. Both my sisters and mum are too. Bad genes!

Me, my mum was totally grey by the time she had me when she was 25, her own dad was grey extremely young as well. I started getting greys in my early 20s and then by the time I was 30 I had quite a lot. Managed with semi permanent box dyes the next few years but went blonde (naturally brunette) about 4 years ago in my early 40s

ListeningQuietly · 07/04/2020 13:36

Most women start to go grey in their 30's
almost all by their 40's

hopefully more will take the opportunity of Lockdown to stop putting strong chemicals on their heads every few weeks.

justanotherneighinparadise · 07/04/2020 13:37

Yep! First greys around 13. Now in my 40s I must be over 60% grey.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 07/04/2020 13:38

Had my first grey at 17/18, full of sparkly bits now at 31. Both my parents were completely grey by 35.

Murree · 07/04/2020 13:39

I started going grey in my late 20s. Now I'm 34 and have been growing the colour out since last May. I have an impressive silver streak at the front that I cant wait to show off properly!

Aulwan · 07/04/2020 13:39

First grey hair at 18, never dyed. Now 56 completely silver grey. Love it 😁. Get lots of compliments especially from hairdressers. Pity the face isn't so great 😭.

Bunnybigears · 07/04/2020 13:39

Tep started to go grey about 25 I'm 36 now and fully grey. Both my mum and I started off very light blonde went through the shades to nearly black aged about 20 then started greying mid 20s.

SilverHighlights · 07/04/2020 13:40

I started going grey at 20.

HeyMac · 07/04/2020 13:41

I was going to post about this soon.

Lots of people talk about dying their hair but not a lot talk about how to look after grey hair. My grey hair coming in seems much more wiry and coarse. Thinking I may have to swap shampoos?

Alsohuman · 07/04/2020 13:41

Yes, first grey at 16. Dyed for years and had no idea what my natural colour was. I was 44 when I decided to stop dyeing for a bit and see what colour I really was. It turned out I was pure silver and it hasn’t been coloured since. It’s in the genes, my brother was 50% grey at 21.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/04/2020 13:54

I started going grey at 17. My hair has not been its natural colour since. DS is 20 and has had the old silver streak for a couple of years.

ListeningQuietly · 07/04/2020 13:59

Heymac
I have long grey hair. My fave conditioner is the Elvive with coconut oil.

The fact that women have been under such pressure to pretend they were NOT going grey has contributed massively to ageism and sexism
greying, balding, overweight blokes get jobs, but women have to keep up a pretence

Lets take this lockdown as an opportunity to reclaim our natural hair.

Rafflesway · 07/04/2020 14:01

My lovely ndn is 59, (slightly younger than me.)

We have lived next door to each other for 26 years and she has been completely grey since the day we met.

Does suit her though! 🙂

Iwalkinmyclothing · 07/04/2020 14:02

IDK if it's early, but I noticed my first grey hair aged 33 (a month before I gave birth to ds3, and I made such an exclamation of shock when I saw it that colleagues thought I was going into labour and panicked). 5 years on, there are a few more, but they seem to clump mostly in one spot and I actually quite like them. I'm back on a red thing atm so dying my hair again, but not to hide the greys, just to enjoy the red!

SoftBlocks · 07/04/2020 14:03
  1. Mum, Dad and DB all white/ silver by 50 and I’m going the same way!
Picklypickles · 07/04/2020 14:04

I found my first grey when I was 21, I'm 38 now and getting more and more of them, have started dyeing it about every 6 months now because my grey hair looks shit, I have curly hair and the grey hairs seem to stick straight up from my roots and they're quite wiry and pube-like for some reason.

peachypetite · 07/04/2020 14:06

I tweeze mine out. Not enough to dye it but enough to annoy me.

ilovepuggies · 07/04/2020 14:06

My best friend is Completely grey and she is 35 she uses a special silver hair shampoo and it looks an amazing colour on her.

middleager · 07/04/2020 14:07

First grey at 19.
Full of greys by 30.
White now at 46, but I dye it as it's not a nice white, it's wiry and pube like.

AdoreTheBeach · 07/04/2020 14:09

I started around 20. By 21, was having it coloured to cover the grey. By 40, was having to get it done once a month and by 45, within a week I would have a “halo” so started with some highlights/low lights.

I’m not totally grey/white. Took two years (as I have longish hair, in hindsight I should have just cut it very short to start). Best thing ever and so liberating.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/04/2020 14:10

I'm 48 and still just get the odd one. Don't know how long that will last though!

FreeKitties · 07/04/2020 14:12

I started with a light sprinkling of grey when I was late 20s but it wasn't really noticeable as I used to dye my hair, last year I decided to stop dying it and see what was underneath and my hair is now entirely dye free and heavily sprinkled with silver I'm definitely embracing my silver fox I love it!
