Where shall I put black, white and grey in the rainbow?

I have reached the level of boredom where I’m about to reorder my bookshelves into rainbow order. Where would you put black, white and grey? Should I put them totally separate?

Noooooo.
Dewey decimal system.
Author's surname.
Or, grouped by genre.
You might find yourself fancying a Nordic thriller or a fantasy novel.... You are unlikely to be in the mood for 'any book as long as it's orange' Grin

I have black on the end of the rainbow after purple (and more behind the sofa). White used to be between yellow and light green, but now on a separate shelf because we ran out of space.

LilacTree1 · 03/04/2020 14:39

If you really want to do it, do you want contrast or blend?

If blend, black and grey next to blue, white next to yellow.

PineappleTart · 03/04/2020 14:40

Noooo by author and / or by type.

MrsJoshNavidi · 03/04/2020 14:51

Rainbow will look lovely, but you'll never be able to find the book you want.

Crackerofdoom · 03/04/2020 14:54

Please don't do this!

My DS has done this on the iPad putting all the apps in folders based on their colour.

I can't find a thing!

safariboot · 03/04/2020 14:57

Greyscale as a separate shelf from black to white.

But seriously, books should be arranged to find what you need, not to look pretty.

caz114 · 03/04/2020 15:00

OOh, now I'm looking at the bookcases, thinking about the colour idea. Might be an improvement on the shambles it is at the moment.

eddiemairswife · 03/04/2020 15:07

I have a bookcase with orange and green Penguins. Some of them are priced at 1s:6d.

willowpatterns · 03/04/2020 15:10

Black, grey, white, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, purple, brown.

We all know that Confused

The OP is bored ....

willowpatterns · 03/04/2020 15:13

I file my non-fiction books in height order Smile

okiedokieme · 03/04/2020 15:18

Height of course, except cookbooks because they are in the kitchen

PaddingtonStation · 03/04/2020 15:22

I started, pulled everything out, started sorting, realised it was a ridiculous thing to do and that I’d have to separate all my books by the same author. I’m just going to have to keep it like this from now on.

Make a book fort!

not helpful

PaddingtonStation · 03/04/2020 15:24

I’ve made a sponge coronavirus, I’ve put a babygro on the cat. I am very, very, very bored. Not bored enough to pick up all those bastard books though.

Ooh, book fort. I could get the kids involved with that. Good thinking

I had a very complicated system for my thousands of books that meant I could instantly find what I needed and grouped them in a way that was most meaningful for me (I used to need them a lot for work). When I moved house, the removal company muddled them all up so I grouped them by colour for fun temporarily.

As it happens, it turns out I know my books well enough to remember what colour they are. Plus, your next task to avert boredom can be to catalogue them so you can still find them Grin

To answer your question, I was advised by an architect friend to put black at the bottom, white at the top. The black anchors everything, the white fades to the ceiling. His words, not mine. Grey works either after black or before white.

SapphireSeptember · 03/04/2020 15:36

My 'rainbow' goes red, orange, yellow, green, aqua/turquoise/teal, blue, purple, pink, coral/peach, brown, black, grey, white, copper, bronze, gold, silver and gunmetal.
(This is how I arrange my lipsticks/nail polishes.)
Then there are tricky colours like greenish gold and blueish grey and some nudes that are lovely but don't fit into my rainbow.
Maybe I have too much time on my hands? Grin

EllaAlright · 03/04/2020 15:43

Ha! This is hilarious!

goingoverground · 03/04/2020 15:45

Oh yes, I forgot brown. I have brown after black and before red.

BlackCatSleeping · 03/04/2020 15:46

Even the cat is like "Bitch gone crazy"!!

ChickLitLover · 03/04/2020 15:48

I can’t believe people still have books, especially that amount. 😬 Rainbow idea might make them look slightly better I suppose. I’m so grateful for kindle. 🤣

Your cat is very cute though, doesn’t look particularly pleased with the clothing though.

eddiemairswife · 03/04/2020 16:00

I have books and bookshelves/cases in every room except the bathroom. I don't own or want a kindle.

Chewbecca · 03/04/2020 16:03

Have you seen Jack Monroe’s rainbow of books? Think it was on
Insta this week, looked fab.
