Where shall I put black, white and grey in the rainbow?

I have reached the level of boredom where I’m about to reorder my bookshelves into rainbow order. Where would you put black, white and grey? Should I put them totally separate?

I did mine by colour once. Discovered that it didn’t work because sometimes the front of a book can be green, so you remember it as a green book and would look for it among the greens, but then the spine would be blue. Too annoying. Then my daughter in a fit of busybodyness arranged them all by author which didn’t work either because when you take them out they might not get but back. Best way was sort of genre, author and height for aesthetic pleasantness. But do it! For the craic.

applesauce the globe drinks cabinet is currently rather empty due to circumstances. I’d loves proper antique one, mines just a cheap cardboard one from Amazon.

mitziK I just had to google what numbers on a resistor are Blush. I’m still not sure I understand

It looks great but the random red/pink one in the middle shelves at the bottom right hand side is disturbing.
I very much would like your room - I'm hoping once our house is done I'll have space for bookshelves again. Envy

How do you let people know that you’re well read without having to resort to bringing it up in conversation?

I think it’s best if I don’t bring up in conversation the type of books I’m well read in. See my username. 😬 This may also explain why I’m happy to hide my books on a kindle and not display them. 🤣

I like how your bookcase now looks. But where’s the cat? And the squirrel?

PaddingtonStation · 03/04/2020 20:57

The pink one at the bottom is the only one I had that is pinky violet. It looks wrong if I put it with the reds too. I might have to move it out with all the other ones that had colours that didn’t fit.

chicklit the cat is sulking in the kitchen, so far still unsquirrelled Grin

ChickLitLover i also love chick lit. But we shorten the name in my house to 'clit'.

StillWeRise · 03/04/2020 21:07

I've recently had to re load all (well some of) my bookshelves- IMO size is the problem
I had a vague sense of order, fiction, non fiction, graphic/cartoons, poetry
But I have some MASSIVE non fiction books, and some smallish ones- it just doesn't work to put them together

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate · 03/04/2020 21:19

Nooooo, you have to do that really wanky hipster thing where all the spines are to the wall, so it’s the pages outwards. Pot luck every time.

Grow yourself a big beard while you’re about it.

PaddingtonStation · 03/04/2020 21:29

stillwerise I’ve redistributed all the non-conforming books elsewhere. I’m never going to be able to find any of the books I want again. I also think it looks a bit shit so I’ll probably put it all back again tomorrow. I did see a photo on Instagram of someone’s bookcase that looked beautifully arranged but if you looked closely there was a spunking cock and ball shape made from the white books. I quite fancy that but I think I’d need a bigger bookcase for it to look effective.

itsabitofashitfightmate do people actually do that? Just when I think humanity can’t get any worse I hear there are people out there that willingly arrange their books like that. That’s made me really angry.

That's a lovely room!

A friend once looked at my bookshelves and commented how cool it was that they were all sorted by colour. I looked at her rather oddly, as they aren't (I have my own way of sorting by rough categories and much internal debate about which author belongs next to whom and which of the children's books are allowed in the kids' section vs staying with my books because they're my special favourites!). Then I realised they are near a window and all the ones on that side had faded to the same sort of light turquoise Grin

MitziK · 03/04/2020 21:47

If you really want to know which I doubt it's a way of representing numbers that is understandable to all people without needing to print tiny, tiny numbers that could only be only read with a microscope and could only be read if they were put in one particular position on a circuit board and assuming decimal points weren't rubbed off or suchlike. A stripe doesn't completely disappear.

I'm not going to waffle on about resistance, multipliers, tolerances and temperature coefficients. You wouldn't thank me for it.

dudsville · 03/04/2020 21:53

At least you have a system you understand. I insist on an alphabetical system, but I'm dyslexic, i don't read left to right but move all over the place, so I find books in the strangest locations.
