I was out for a (yes local) wood walk with my DD about 5pm. On the path was this creature. I think it was alive as it seemed to move purposefully. It rolled, on and off, intermittently. V dark grey/black, slightly shiny. MyDD was totally freaked and in fairness it was a bit creepy, so we turned back. But now I’m wondering was it a) in trouble and unwell or b) an exotic pet or something that some authority should know about.

Anyone know, and what should I do, if anything.

God knows.

Badger-slug?

TheSpottedZebra · 28/03/2020 20:48

Where in the country?

Veronicat · 28/03/2020 20:48

Looks like a black carrier bag to me 😂

Water vole? Rat?

TheoriginalLEM · 28/03/2020 20:49

Looks like a badger - vicious buggers with teeth and claws but yes was probably unwell.:(

PerspicaciaTick · 28/03/2020 20:49

Rat

KayakingOnDown · 28/03/2020 20:50

Badger. Unwell badger.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 20:51

I thought it was a black bag at first too but then it moved. Stopped and moved again. It’s a wood walk, west. It sort of looked like a giant beetle. Could it be an armadillo? Do people keep armadillos as pets??

It looks nothing like any badger I’ve seen. Badgers are huge and have a long black and white face.

1066vegan · 28/03/2020 20:53

It's really hard to get a sense of scale from that photo. How big was it?

Crunchymum · 28/03/2020 20:54

It's a black carrier bag. It was being blown / not blown by the wind.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 28/03/2020 20:54

Yes people keep almost anything as pets including armadillos. I doubt it was that though. A rat caught in a bag?

TaxFool · 28/03/2020 20:54

I can't see any features on it. Which end is which? It looks like a tent bag.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 20:54

It didn’t look furry.
Much bigger than a rat.

Badger-slug isn’t a bad description.

I don’t know if you can see from the photo but there were antennae-like things that made me believe it was alien. (Joking. But only sort of) Grin

Looks like a carrier bag to me 🤷‍♀️

Crunchymum · 28/03/2020 20:56

I've zoomed in on your pic. See it's a carrier bag.

Rat in a poo bag?
(Not a sentence I thought I would ever type.)

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 20:57

Size? About the size of a cat. Maybe a bit bigger.
As I walked closer DD was getting ready to cry with terror so I stopped. I wanted to take a video of it moving but we had to abandon.

Def not a bag, it moved quite purposefully

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 28/03/2020 20:58

Looks like a dog poo bag which if it had been dropped by someone and possibly had some poo in it and was caught by the wind, it might look like it’s rolling along?

TaxFool · 28/03/2020 20:58

Yeah it really does just look like a bag. The "antenna" you refer to are some sort of handles or ties? I've looked and looked again - I see no creature.

SpratsOnParade · 28/03/2020 20:58

Dog poo bag.

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 28/03/2020 20:58

Ah just seen your post about being cat sized. Maybe an extra large poo bag?!!

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 20:59

Can you see why I thought it was a ginormous beetle? The antennae things and then it seemed to be ‘ divided’ at the back, like the wings of a beetle.

Can you reassure me it won’t seek me out tonightGrinGrin

OP posts:
CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 21:01

It rolled over and back. Up a mound, Dow a mound. Irregularly. No wind.

If we've now got cat-sized beetles in the UK then I think an increasing number of people will be forgoing their daily exercise Grin

I maintain it is a bag and will do so until you go back and check. Go now. Take a torch. Good luck Grin
