I was out for a (yes local) wood walk with my DD about 5pm. On the path was this creature. I think it was alive as it seemed to move purposefully. It rolled, on and off, intermittently. V dark grey/black, slightly shiny. MyDD was totally freaked and in fairness it was a bit creepy, so we turned back. But now I’m wondering was it a) in trouble and unwell or b) an exotic pet or something that some authority should know about.

Anyone know, and what should I do, if anything.

Can you tell me what is this ?animal

Definitely a lesser spotted badger slug.

Very rare. Nasty bite if provoked so be careful Grin

Jellykat · 28/03/2020 21:47

Take a pokey stick just in case..
(obviously not needed if its a bundle of kittens)

RishiSunakFanClub · 28/03/2020 21:49

This is so funny I can't stop laughing. You think it's an armadillo! Have you ever seen one? It bears no resemblance to a black plastic bag or a badger slug Grin

Definitely take a VERY LONG pokey stick. Grin

LynetteScavo · 28/03/2020 21:54

If it was kittens they would be mewing, wouldn't they?

It's definitely a giant beetle going home to its giant beetle lair (where do beetles live?)

TheClitterati · 28/03/2020 22:09

Is it a broken crow?

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 28/03/2020 22:53

Bigger than a crow. Although it’s as black as a crow.

@RishiSunakFanClub Thanks for clearing that up.

I think the likeliest is something in a tied black bag. By accident or design. I’ll send DH with a long pokey stick to investigate tomorrow.

Shameless place mark. My watch button isn't showing in the app.

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 23:27

Oh dear, I am weeping at badger-slug!

Intelinside57 · 28/03/2020 23:37

How could you not go and see? It looks like a bag, and could have had something alive dumped in it.

Intelinside57 · 28/03/2020 23:38

After all, this is the UK, it's not going to be some previously undiscovered dangerous beast is it?

Shannith · 29/03/2020 06:47

@Intelinside57 have you not seen the experts naming this badger slug? RTFH for goodness sake.

We could be on the brink of a major species breakthrough.

HennyPenny4 · 29/03/2020 06:58

I would say a crow, crows are quite big close to. Head tucked in and the pokey bits on the left are tail feathers.

or an old bit of black bag. Was it too big for a poo bag.

hillyholly · 29/03/2020 07:11

I need to know.

PieceOfMaria · 29/03/2020 07:14

I was going to say, it’s. It a very clear photo but it looks like an enormous stag beetle to me.

puds11 · 29/03/2020 07:18

Looks like a poo bag. Possible it was being pulled about by an animal trying to get to the poo.

PieceOfMaria · 29/03/2020 07:28

Yes! Could have been a large bird or rat inside a poo bag.

FredaFrogspawn · 29/03/2020 07:39

We found an abandoned baby badger slug once. Took it home fed it chicken pellets and marmite toast but the bastard somehow got into the boot cupboard and ate one of dad’s Allotment galoshes. We finally gave it to Goole petting zoo when we caught it in the fridge licking the leftovers of the week’s pack-up haslett.

I don’t recommend befriending badger slugs.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 07:42

Place marking hoping for a kitten rescue.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 07:42

Maybe the bag was being pulled along by an ant who was trying to get it back to the ant nest. Ants are very strong.

NopeNotToday5 · 29/03/2020 07:48

Looks like a shit bag.

goodthanks · 29/03/2020 07:53

Wild goat? We saw one once on a walk and I practically pissed my pants it gave me such a fright.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 29/03/2020 07:54

🤣🤣🤣it's a,dog poo bag !!

Shannith · 29/03/2020 11:05

@goodthanks I feel for you, but the OP's animal would have to have been a really, really small wild goat. Maybe, not small, but certainly far away.

goodthanks · 29/03/2020 11:35

@Shannith Miniature wild goat hiding inside a dog poo bag is my best guess
