5 years since Terry Pratchett died.

The ripples still carry on so he's not forgotten yet. Today I shall wear lilac.

My ds got to meet him at his secondary school. I was most envious! He got a signed copy of one of his books Smile

My first book was Interesting Times. I bought it as a teenager at the airport on holiday to.. Spain? You remember the important things.

Placing this 🥚
Hope it works.

WitchDancer · 12/03/2020 16:06

My first was The Hogfather, which was also my DS's first. I think my favourites go between the witches and the watchmen. Oh and then there's Susan...

Ok @LaMarschallin I’ve ordered Good Omens. I know I’ve seen the series but I liked it. Delivery on Monday.

CheriLittlebottom · 12/03/2020 16:38

These!! Anyone go?

LaMarschallin · 12/03/2020 16:40

Lllot5

Fingers crossed that you enjoy it Smile

Just thought of something that was included in the series and not the book...

Won't say anything in case I spoil it and in case I'm wrong

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/03/2020 17:24

Prawn, it was Alzheimer’s and not dementia that he had. Sounds picky, but they are different.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/03/2020 17:31

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia.

SedentaryCat · 12/03/2020 17:59

Mort was the first one I read in around 1990/91- my friends told me about Binky the horse and I thought it would be worth a read. I've been hooked ever since.

My sister met him at a book signing. She was wearing a pentagram and he asked her whether it was just for show, or did she dance around outside without her drawers on!

I miss having a new TP book every year/18 months - I've found nothing since that makes me laugh in quite the same way.

I too am wearing the lilac. I used to see Sir Terry at a Christmas concert that we both went to every year. I ended up sitting behind him once - I think I was about 12 - and looking at the back of his head thinking "the whole Discworld is in there".

One year, when I was 17 and in my Goth phase, I wrote Born to Rune on the back of my leather jacket with stick on studs. TP bought me a frothy coffee from the bar Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/03/2020 19:59

looking at the back of his head thinking "the whole Discworld is in there".

That's a terrifying thought.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/03/2020 20:46

Five years, still sad. Didn’t there used to be a lilac emoji on here for TP or am I imagining it? That was me! I started that thread to ask. Mn changed flowers to lilac for the day. I was dead proud.

Mort was my first TP. I bought it at my local train station (yes, they sell English language books at most medium and up train stations in the Netherlands) because I was desperate for something to read.
As soon as I got back from where I'd been, I bought the rest of their TP books and had no money for food for a week (when I could borrow some from my parents).
And that was it.
I did like The Shepherd's Crown, but it read like a first draft. Which of course it was.
He had a rare and very specific form of Alzheimer's disease which attacks young and fast. We'd have had more books out of him if he'd had the common form. Sad
My DDs are 19 and 17 and have either read his books or have had them read to them by me.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/03/2020 20:59

I knew I did, but so did MrsTerryP. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2337516-Wearing-the-lilac
Look, I lost my TP related username when we got hacked.

Terry Pratchett died on the day I left my husband. I've just bought DS1 his first Terry Pratchett book...I hope he likes it.

Lima45 · 12/03/2020 21:05

Another wearing the lilac.

Oh how they rise up

GNU STP

Nousernameforme · 12/03/2020 21:12

Witches Abroad was my first. I still want to be Nanny Ogg when I grow old.
It took me a year to read
The Shepherds Crown. I'm glad I did but it was so sad.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/03/2020 21:28

My people are here. Smile

First one I read was Small Gods. And one of my first "proper" acting was playing Princess Keli in a stage production of Mort.

CheriLittlebottom · 12/03/2020 21:48

Small God's is the absolute best critique of religion I have ever encountered. Terry's mind was just astounding.

NorthernChinchilla · 12/03/2020 22:29

He brought almost as much joy to my life as my kids, and I never wanted to throttle him or had to bribe him with chocolate Grin
Painfully missed

MaidenMotherCrone · 12/03/2020 22:30

I thought Equal Rights was the first Witches book.

SanFranBear · 12/03/2020 22:43

When he passed, I swore to read all the books again in order. I've got as far as Unseen Academicals, so the 37th. I'm getting jittery just knowing that afterwards, there are just four more and then no more.

I have adored his books since forever - whenever I was at the library and needed one more book (as you do), I would always head to the fantasy section and grab one.

His books are works of art, imo - beautifully written, funny and so SO clever! I can't believe it's been five years Sad

CheriLittlebottom · 12/03/2020 23:26

Going to bed with Mort. Seemed appropriate.

GNU Sir Terry, you are much missed.

IamEarthymama · 12/03/2020 23:40

What joy, humour, compassion, giggles and belly laughs he brought us! 💖

DW says I have a special laugh; if she hears it she knows I am re-reading one of my favourites.😂
