5 years since Terry Pratchett died.

The ripples still carry on so he's not forgotten yet. Today I shall wear lilac.

GNU Pterry, you gave me so much wisdom and I still feel your loss. Happily I have been able to keep my Discworld name which is a nod to my chosen profession and one I use for various gaming apps 😁
I’ve chosen the opening theme from Good Omens as the entry music for my civil partnership as a nod to one of the big influences in my life

theluckiest · 12/03/2020 23:51

I'm not going to lie. DH is the big TP fan in my house, not me.

But he always seemed like such a bloody fabulous bloke, in spite of 'the buggerance'

My beloved grandma died of dementia when Sir Terry was diagnosed with his. It's such a horrible, unfair way to end one's days.

It made me want to read more ....which one should I start with?

MrSlant · 12/03/2020 23:54

GNU Sir Pterry you added so much to my life and still do, what a legacy.

I'll go against the grain and say start at the beginning with Colour of Magic. Everyone else hates it (so don't judge him on that). I just wish I could go right back to the beginning and read then all again fresh. And that's the beginning.

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 13/03/2020 00:12

My first book was hogfather, a Christmas present for Christmas when I was 11. Last Christmas my 8year old DD and I read it together; The genius when spoken aloud is so so clear. After that, we read mort together while she read reaper man on her own. It is wonderful to watch my child be caught in those words and I am so envious she gets to read them for the first time.

I wore the lilac, and I am torn between gratitude for all the wonder and laughter and loss for the books that will never happen.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2020 00:26

I started with The Colour of Magic because it was what someone recommended to me in about 1990. I enjoyed it and carried on.

I did that a few years ago - reading them aloud to DD at bedtime. We'd done the bromeliad trilogy and the Johnny series when she was younger, and Maurice which had just come out. She read the Tiffany ones herself in due course as they were published , but together we got through the first 20, stalling eventually at Jingo ... I really ought to carry on.

I always think of Small Gods as the discworld gateway drug. It’s such an amazing critique of organized religion & it’s standalone; you don’t have to know any lore.

mycorona · 13/03/2020 01:52

My dad died on the same date, he was a TP fan.

AmberAndAlexsMum · 13/03/2020 02:00

I love Terry Pratchett's books. I have read all of them and re read them regularly. I have read the last Tiffany book and even though we lost Granny Weatherwax I still think it's a brilliant book.

He knew he was dying when he was writing that book and I can't help thinking but he decided to take Granny with him.

I often think of the characters and wonder how they would have moved on Had he not passed away. I would have loved to know how to Tiffany and Preston got on.

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 13/03/2020 11:46

Used to hang out on alt.fan.pratchett back in the 90s when the internet was a baby.
Loved his books for years, can’t believe it’s been 5 years.
GNU PTerry

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2020 12:01

I always find it really difficult as it brings it back how long my mum has had dementia. She was diagnosed the same year as TP (TP had posterior cortical atrophy, mum has fronto temporal dementia) and before dementia she loved to read - the whole house is full of books, and she'd have three or more books on the go at any point. Buying the new TP book was a big occasion, and when I'd left home we'd be reading it simultaneously. Then dementia took her language, and by the time TP died she'd long stopped reading, or even listening to her beloved Tony Robinson audio books.
So I mourn TP (and always read the Shepherds Crown in the week before his anniversary), but also the joy he gave mum iyswim

Woodlandtrain · 13/03/2020 12:53

I'd be a different person without Discworld. GNU Terry Pratchett.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/03/2020 14:14

So sorry Dibbler. Thanks

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 14/03/2020 16:08

UserXv It's the most personal of all his works. In there you'll find the rage and disgust against the world as it is, the contempt for the end justifies the means, and the compassion that says everyone, including Vorbis, is worthy of redemption. There are no easy answers, but there are no questions that shouldn't be asked.

AvonBarksdale99 · 14/03/2020 18:56

Just throwing in a comment for the carpet people. Non-dis world, but superb

Timetogiveupnow · 14/03/2020 19:08

I was lucky enough to meet the great guy twice, one at a book signing and once at a am dram production. I also got to be in an am dram discworld production which was a dream one true. I've tried my children onto him, as we all enjoyed good omens.
Last year for Christmas my son had found the two discworld maps in a charity shop and insisted he bought them for me for Christmas. I feel I've done something right

Krouse64 · 14/03/2020 20:53

I saw online earlier this year that they are making a series about the watch, not sure if I’ll watch as I would hate it if the characters were not right.

CheriLittlebottom · 14/03/2020 21:06

The characters are VERY not right from the press releases so far. I will be avoiding it like the plague.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/03/2020 21:20

So much this. Sounds like someone read his books and didn't understand a word.

CaptainCallisto · 14/03/2020 21:57

Also Rhianna Pratchett has been very keen to make it clear that the family have had nothing to do with it. That never bodes well!

CaptainCallisto · 14/03/2020 21:58

@AvonBarksdale99 I've just finished reading Truckers, Diggers, and Wings to my two (6 & 8) and they've absolutely loved them.

Eskscumblerecipie · 15/03/2020 11:04

GNU STP
My first book was Mort. I was totally hooked. TP has kept and still keeps me company and vaguely sane through some very difficult times.

AvonBarksdale99 another fan of the carpet people here. Smile

Morporkia · 15/03/2020 11:18

Witches abroad was my first. Saw it in the library and gave it a go.I realised I was completely out of sequence but was hooked. GNU STP. I will be getting my lilac tattoo on the glorious 25th May, whilst eating a hard boiled egg...

selfisolate · 15/03/2020 13:07

I remember hanging out with him in a grassy camping field....he likes kronenberg 1664!

merryhouse · 16/03/2020 22:06

@GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick who were you on afp? I was ingenious paradox (parasta miehelle)
