5 years since Terry Pratchett died.

The ripples still carry on so he's not forgotten yet. Today I shall wear lilac.

Deeply deeply missed. Me and DH still quote various bits of Discworld to each other constantly. Wonder if DD1 is old enough to be introduced to him yet?

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 12/03/2020 12:20

I love the Discworld. Have just ordered myself Night Watch, it's been ages since I read a new one, I only discovered them a few years ago and have been rationing them as I can't bear to come to the end.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2020 12:20

There was a lilac for a brief while, I don't know what the magic was to get it.

GNU Terry. One of my all time favourite authors, and a huge loss.

LangClegTheBeardedVulture · 12/03/2020 12:22

GNU Sir Terry.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2020 12:24

Oh, that's interesting- in the browser I still see lilacs in there, on the app it's a normal bunch of flowers.

AlunWynsKnee · 12/03/2020 12:24

Sorely missed.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/03/2020 12:27

GNU Sir Terry, a very wise human being.

Don't read The Colour of Magic first, its a bit weak and far from his best.

AvonBarksdale99 · 12/03/2020 12:28

Brilliant author. Still reread his books over and over. Can’t believe it’s been 5 years!

Igmum · 12/03/2020 12:32

Wearing the lilac. On this day and in this place. An old flat mate introduced me to Discworld when the Colour of Magic was first out. I've got a copy of the Light Fantastic signed (to me). ❤️ Sir Terry

ThatLibraryMiss · 12/03/2020 12:34

I still haven’t read (and possibly never will) the last witches books.

Don't. That way you'll never see what Alzheimer's did to that brilliant mind.

Anyone who hasn't read any of his books: start with Wyrd Sisters, the first of the witches books. They introduce some long-running characters and he'd really got into his stride by then.

BursarsDriedFrogPills · 12/03/2020 12:38

Signing in

RatOnnaStick · 12/03/2020 12:40

Dusted off my old name for today.

Shinyfloors · 12/03/2020 12:42

Many thanks for the suggestions of where to start.

LaMarschallin · 12/03/2020 12:44

TinklyLittleLaugh

Don't read The Colour of Magic first, its a bit weak and far from his best.

Agreed.

I'd suggest either all the City Watch series (starts "Guards! Guards!") or the Witches series (starts "Wyrd Sisters").

I don't know if I'd have persisted if I'd started with "The Colour of Magic".
The first book of his I read was the collaboration with Neil Gaiman ("Good Omens"), so realised it was worth it.
Awful loss for me if I hadn't Sad

And TCOM is worth reading once you've got a few others under your belt, if only to understand some of the references in other books (eg Two Flower in "Interesting Times").

Also wearing the lilac.
At this time and in this place.

(I think "Night Watch" was my favourite.)

CrackerWantAPolly · 12/03/2020 12:45

Agree, start with Guards Guards! It’s the first of ‘The Watch’ series which are my favourites!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/03/2020 12:52

I read Monstrous Regiment first (got it from the library). Bloody loved it.

Annoyingly for years previously I'd lived with a man who had a full library of Pratchett. "Just read one", he used to say, "You'll love it". I'd been put off by the horrible illustrations on the cover and the blurbs talking about hilarious comedy and farce.

I literally judged a book by it's cover.

HermioneWeasley · 12/03/2020 12:53

😢

merryhouse · 12/03/2020 13:00

The Shepherd's Crown is a good book. But when you have read all his other books you read it spotting all the things that should have gone somewhere and just... didn't. As a Pratchett, it's an outline.

(I started with CoM, but I had read quite a bit of fantasy by that point so got the broad brushstrokes even if the details passed me by.)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/03/2020 13:00

Five years. Sad Greatly missed. I also wear the lilac today. Small Gods is my favourite.

CornedBeef451 · 12/03/2020 13:02

@7Penguins it's a really good book but I cried a disturbing amount when she died.

Kuponut · 12/03/2020 13:06

Well I've just ordered his short stories books for the kids - get 'em on the right path.

Think Mort was my first one I read - DH handed me a few and told me to get on with it and got me hooked - the dated-looking covers had put me off before then.

TheSummoningDark · 12/03/2020 13:08

Also wearing the lilac.

Wyrd Sisters is a good place to start, although the City Watch series is my favourite.

PetraDelphiki · 12/03/2020 13:10

Moving pictures!

MotherofKitties · 12/03/2020 13:25

Still my favourite author of all time. I read The Hogfather every Christmas have done since I was little. He was a literary genius and I'm still sad he's gone.

GNU.
