Favourite Stories from Girls Comics

Inspired by the favourite children's books thread I was interested in people's fave stories from the old weekly girls comics - Bunty, Mandy, Tammy etc.
My favourite was definitely Angel in Mandy Comic. The story of a rich Victorian girl who discovers she only has a year to live so she fakes her death, runs away from home so she can devote her time to caring for homeless waifs and strays in the poor part of London.

@QueenOfTheAndals I love that illustrator. May not get much more work done this morning...

Ladytron11 · 16/03/2020 13:04

Bunty fan here too. I've still got several 70s annuals somewhere...
Four Marys fans - do you remember the two school bullies? Mabel and Veronica. One had short blonde hair and one short dark hair but both had the same mean faces!
The story that sticks in my mind from that era was about a girl called Queenie. She was brought up very poor but didn't know she had a sister who was from a very rich family and they had been split up at birth (maybe twins?).
And a front cover featuring Bunty where she wants a silky complexion so goes to wash her face "in the morning dew" on a Spring morning. She ends up with a horrendous cold instead.

I remember Mabel and Veronica @Ladytron11, there was something of Bernard Bresslaw in drag about them.

This was the one about the witch themed coach tour and the scary red eyes - don't have nightmares!

I'm sure the same artist also did The Pathetic Attempts of Leonard J Watkins To Find Love In A World Which Has Something Against Him (phew) from the Jackie annuals - anyone remember that one? Sleazy French Pierre who was always trying to get off with Leonard's girlfriend Myrtle? And his fat sister who fancied Leonard.

@SidneyCarton i remember the Jackie story. One from the 80s.

Sewrainbow · 17/03/2020 21:35

Omg I remember the coma girl story, I had that book. I really thought she was a dead victorian!

VenusClapTrap · 17/03/2020 21:44

Oh yes that coach tour one takes me back!

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/03/2020 22:57

The story of the werewolf girl left on a doorstep by a gypsy woman was also in my old Diana annual. All those stories about evil gypsies wouldn't be considered very PC today!

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/03/2020 11:34

More creepy stories from Diana's Man in Black.

MulticolourMophead · 18/03/2020 12:36

@Barracker another Misty fan here, and so was DM. I recall that story, and also enjoyed another where a teen girl discovers she's really a priestess for the Egyptian goddess Bast.

Deathraystare · 18/03/2020 12:48

I don't remember which comic and it wasn't a favourite story so much as it frightened me so much I had nightmares!!

I cannot remember how, some sort of science experiment, but a girl was left with hair allover her face. I had nightmares a few times over that!!!

I also remember one about a girl with dark green har and she had to soak up the sun or she would get ill and her hair would go lighter.

What is it about hair????

Oh and one about a ballerina who was aactually a robot. Hmm

Yes! A girl started at her cousin’s school but there was no sign of the cousin & she finally discovered that was what had happened to her. I’m not sure if she was hiding voluntarily until they could find a cure or if she was a prisoner.

sunkengalleon · 18/03/2020 14:03

At my grans there was a single issue of I think misty and a story about a girl in hospital whose entire head was bandaged. She was the scariest thing i've ever seen and her expression was terrified. I think she was getting her bandages off and that was also freaky. No idea what happened next but the image is burned into my brain

MulticolourMophead · 18/03/2020 15:01

I loved Misty, mum binned the copies I had when we moved house as a teen.

Stories I recall include one where a vain, shallow girl sees a beauty pageant being held by pig worshippers. She's given an amulet and wishes for beauty only she wakes up with the face of a pig (well, they were pig worshippers after all).

Another story, or series, involved a girl feeling her family and everyone around her were somehow odd, nothing was quite right. Turns out everyone is a replicate, created by aliens to keep her happy as the Earth was destroyed and the girl was the only one they managed to save. Girl opted to go back to that point in time and die with her family. Quite an adult theme for a child's comic.
