Favourite Stories from Girls Comics

Inspired by the favourite children's books thread I was interested in people's fave stories from the old weekly girls comics - Bunty, Mandy, Tammy etc.
My favourite was definitely Angel in Mandy Comic. The story of a rich Victorian girl who discovers she only has a year to live so she fakes her death, runs away from home so she can devote her time to caring for homeless waifs and strays in the poor part of London.

There is another story, possibly from Diana that sticks in my mind. A girl was accompanying her archaeologist father to a dig at some Inca or Mayan ruins and they uncovered a shrine to a goddess who "fell from the sky" and only had 4 fingers. Anyway the girl and her father are flying away from the site when their plane crashes. She isn't injured beyond a broken thumb and she realises she's gone back in time to the time the city was built. Anyway to cut a long story short, she realises she is the goddess who fell from the sky and due to her broken thumb the people think she only has four fingers! Anyone else remember that one?

1066vegan that's amazing ! Thank you!
This is the image I've had in my head all these years Grin

@blueskys72 Glad to help. I still look through them occasionally; they're a great comfort read.

There was also an amazing story in a Judy annual about a cottage being renovated by two friends and it had a painting which was cursed by an ancient evil "gypsy". The illustrations were fabulous.

My Brother Marmaduke !

AnneKipanki · 15/03/2020 19:14

Funny you should say that regarding tonsils @QueenOfTheAndals .
I saw someone the other week and she had lost stones in weight. She had her tonsils out .

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/03/2020 19:28

@sunkengalleon I think I remember that story too!

CharBart · 15/03/2020 19:30

I loved Bunty and Mandy in the mid 80s. The stories I remember were the 4 Mary’s, Angel, I Remember Rachel about a girl who was adopted by a family and discovered she was the image of their dead daughter, a story about a girl who had an alien posing as her sister and she was the only one who knew she didn’t have a sister, and I think one about a family of orphans who lived in a tree?

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/03/2020 19:31

@sunkengalleon this one?

I remember reading a lot of mums old annuals which must have been from the 70s. Could have been Mandy or maybe Jackie? There was a really scary story in one of them about the Salem witch trials. Comic book form and made up characters but very very scary! Anyone?

1066vegan · 15/03/2020 19:57

I loved Wee Slavey.

As a kid , I never realised how many of the stories were rip offs of books, plays and films.

There was one in Jinty I loved about a Victorian family who were shipwrecked on a tropical island. They were all reliant on the maid who was the only one who could do anything useful. That was like The Admirable Crichton.

There was another one about a girl who moved house and found that the girls at her new school were eerily well behaved. That was like The Stepford Wives.

sunkengalleon · 15/03/2020 20:01

@QueenOfTheAndals the very one!

1066vegan · 15/03/2020 20:05

Anyone remember Human Zoo? It was one of my favourite serials in Jinty. People, including 2 sisters, get kidnapped by telepathic aliens who treat them like animals. One of the girls scares the others by reminding them how badly humans treat animals and saying that the aliens could do the same to them.

She's bought as a pet by an alien family. I remember one episode where she arrives at their home and is attacked by their existing pet, a 2 headed goat. Later she cuddles it. The aliens think that shows how stupid she is but we know that she understands why the animal feels threatened and jealous of her.

sunkengalleon · 15/03/2020 20:56

There was also a really twisted story about a girl who had just been a huge success on stage or something and was offered a wish that night. She wished she could live the whole day once again and did but ......... the day included her Making The Wish and so she was trapped in that day forever. Brrr.

notanotherjigsawpiece · 15/03/2020 23:00

I think one about a family of orphans who lived in a tree?

Yes I remember this. They found a sort of a cave in the hollowed our roots of a tree. They picked sheep’s wool off fences and found some old vegetables, though I can’t remember the ending.

AlexanderBerry · 16/03/2020 03:28

Jinty sounds like it had really imaginative stories.

I remember that one! She was a pianist.

Catrescue1971 · 16/03/2020 05:08

I don't if anyone can remember a story I always remember. It may be Bunty but could have been a few comics as I used to have loads. So, some girls find a derelict house and decide to investigate. Upstairs they find a dolls house that seems to mirror the derelict house. Strangely they get transported into the dolls house. Years go by and every body thinks the girls are missing but they are just stuck, miniature in the dolls house. In the house they have various adventures. At some point they get rescued - I think somebody sees them looking out of the window - but all exit as old ladies. I'm not sure but I feel as if one of them decides to stay as all their family is dead - that bit may be my imagination.

Catrescue1971 · 16/03/2020 05:25

@TheMemoryLingers I wonder if that story is the same as mine but misremembered?

TheMemoryLingers · 16/03/2020 07:09

@Catrescue1971 It sounds exactly the same, other than the jigsaw/dolls' house variation. It might be one of us misremembering or it might be that the plot was recycled - I think there were a few very similar stories that cropped up over the years.

Catrescue1971 · 16/03/2020 07:15

How fascinating!! I wonder which comic it was from. I read Bunty, Tammy, Dreamer, but would read other types if my favourites weren't in the newsagents, so it could be anything. I would love to read it with my 14yo daughter. She would love it. Dh says that Dr Who have a similar story.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/03/2020 07:34

@notanotherjigsawpiece that was The Guardian Tree.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/03/2020 12:01

I found the story about the girl in the coma! There are a few on this site.
