Favourite Stories from Girls Comics

Inspired by the favourite children's books thread I was interested in people's fave stories from the old weekly girls comics - Bunty, Mandy, Tammy etc.
My favourite was definitely Angel in Mandy Comic. The story of a rich Victorian girl who discovers she only has a year to live so she fakes her death, runs away from home so she can devote her time to caring for homeless waifs and strays in the poor part of London.

The factory owner turned out to be one of the girl's fathers. They escaped and the father gave instructions to let his daughter and her friend escape but to start to move everyone else. He didn't know that she had overheard his voice when in the punishment box and the friend had kept a journal.

My car boot sale haul! I remember having the Misty, Tammy & Bunty ones as a child - no idea what happened to them though.

Oooh that's a good haul. Happy reading.

In 1990 I went into hospital and took that years Judy annual to read. Someone borrowed it and never gave it back. I'm still annoyed.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/03/2020 19:57

I had that Judy and wish I could remember what stories were in it!

vampirethriller · 13/03/2020 02:43

Yes!

Something about girls who after a gas leak (?) had to inhabit each other’s worlds until they died: sporty girl world, cake world for gluttonous one etc...*
I remember that one! In the gluttonous girl's world her sister was teasing her for being too thin.

DollyDaydream70 · 13/03/2020 18:21

My favourite was similar to your own. It was in a comic called Tracy, the story was called Hard Hearted Harriet. I just googled and found this description of the story: 'In Victorian times, Harriet Bond discovers she is living on borrowed time with an incurable illness. She devotes her remaining time to finding good homes for her brothers and sisters. To make them want to leave her, she pretends to turn hard hearted and unloving.'

Ebay and Amazon are going to be wondering why sales of dusty old annuals have shot up
I actually didn't think you would be able to buy them . I've just bought one from eBay so happy really cheered me up , thanks everyone 👍.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/03/2020 19:14

I found the Diana annual I once owned! Complete with centrefold of the Boomtown Rats and an interview with Joanna Lumley!

GulliBelle · 13/03/2020 19:41

I have a fondness for the second hand annuals with names inscribed on them and completed quizzes. It is like a link to the past.

Witchofzog · 13/03/2020 20:02

I have found my people!

I remember Nikki and Hi Op. I remember following the "countdown to Christmas" beauty regime in HI and being surprised that I looked the same. Hi was my favourite magazine for a while though.

I also remember Redvale Comp. The main characters were called Samantha and Julie. I remember when Julie's dad lost his job and they couldn't afford to go to Ibiza anymore. I also remember Luv Lisa. That was when the magazine changed for the worst I think. They reduced the stories and made the paper all glossy.

I remember one of the Mandy or Judy annuals had a story about a Magic Typewriter. The girl in it was behind at school but when she got the typewriter she became top of the class. A mean girl stole it from her but it didn't work and she realised that the typewriter wasn't magic after all. It was just that typing her school work enabled her to order her thoughts better and she wasn't stupid after all.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/03/2020 20:11

That typewriter story sounds familiar @Witchofzog

GulliBelle · 13/03/2020 20:35

I remember the typewriter story. The mean girl stole it to do her home work, but when she handed it in all she had typed was several pages of 'I stole this typewriter' or something similar.

I haven't read all this thread yet , saving it for the weekend when I have some time . I loved the four Mary's , I remember one story in the annual that all the four Mary's went mad as a crater was in the sports field then it was filed in and all ok .
I remember another story in bunty or Mandy I think that a girl went home and her family didn't live there , then afterwards it was realised that the girl was killed on her way home and she was in fact a ghost . Loads more I'm sure already mentioned so will have a good read .

Witchofzog · 13/03/2020 21:30

@GulliBelle yes!!! I forgot about that part but yes it did. Maybe it WAS magic after all then but I know the girl still got good marks without it

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/03/2020 22:06

The one about the girl who didn't realise she was a ghost rings a bell too.

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/03/2020 22:07

Though wait, she may not have been a ghost! Maybe she was in a coma instead and woke up at the end?

GulliBelle · 13/03/2020 22:14

I think it was meant to be the mean girl's guilty conscience that made her type it!

idontlike789 · 13/03/2020 22:24

Oh the coma rings a bell you may be right , wish I'd kept all my annuals .

CandyflossKid · 13/03/2020 22:33

Haven't got a clue what it was in but the one I remember is called 'Hard-Hearted Harriet'.
She looked after her younger brothers and sisters but because she knew she was ill and going to die, she was horrible to them so they didnt depend on her, even though it made her very sad

bookmum08 · 13/03/2020 22:52

Witchofzog it's funny that I remember Hi mag but actually don't have any memory of what was actually in it. Did it have stories or was it just teen stuff? I sort of remember it as being marketed to the getting a bit old for Bunty but not old enough for Jackie age group.
I used to really like Luv Lisa but the girl who played Lisa (played? Is that the right word?) was clearly looking too old towards the end. That's the problem with photo stories. You can't be age 14 for 50 odd years like them Mary girls!!
