How old were you when you lost your last grandparent?

I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

I'm 41 and my Grandma died last Thursday. I feel very lucky that she was in my life for so long

Gotakeahike · 08/03/2020 17:00

I’m pushing 40 and have 1 left, well into their 90s. One passed when I was 1 and the others before I was born.

DareDevil223 · 08/03/2020 17:03

14 when I lost my maternal grandmother. Both my grandfathers died before I was born.

My now grown up DS lost his paternal grandfather at 16, my mum at 21 and paternal gran is still going. My dad sadly died before he was born which is one of my greatest sorrows.

DonttouchthatLarry · 08/03/2020 17:04

3 died before I was born and the last when I was 5 (my parents were 40 when I was born though and weren't the oldest in their families so their parents were quite old).

Equimum · 08/03/2020 17:05

My last one died when I was 21. I only ever knew two, and the other died when I was three.

From a different angle, my friends (married couple) are both 38 and between them, they still have six grandparents and the last great grandparent only died a couple of years ago!

  1. Both grandads died before I was born (one to cancer, one to a car crash.) Grandma at 16 and then the last when I was at uni.
Haworthia · 08/03/2020 17:12

I still have one left and I’m 39. But she has dementia so I don’t feel like I have any surviving grandparents. She doesn’t know who I am.

You can befriend a lonely elderly person via Age UK

dementedma · 08/03/2020 17:15

No idea, to be honest. I never really knew them.

justilou1 · 08/03/2020 17:19

32 and I loved her more than my parents. I still miss her! I’m so grateful that she met my eldest - her first great grandchild, who is named after her. (And oddly, practically a clone in looks & temperament!)

Phillipa12 · 08/03/2020 17:19

I was 23 when the 1st died and 33 when the last died, i count myself very lucky as my 3dc only have 1 grandparent left and my oldest is 11.

aibutohavethisusername · 08/03/2020 17:20

33

Bingeslayer · 08/03/2020 17:21

36 and he was my favourite.

Sewrainbow · 08/03/2020 17:37

33, after I had lost my dad, his parents died when I was 19, the other one well before I was born.

bellabelly · 08/03/2020 17:40

I was 21 when my last grandparent died. The other three all died within a few years of each other - I was about 13, 15 and 17 when they died. Am 47 now and my own parents are of a similar age to the GPS now. Somehow seem far less "elderly" though. But maybe that's just the fact that I am older now so age 70+ doesn't seem quite so ancient to me these days.

Fluffy40 · 08/03/2020 17:40

I was only eight. Never met my grandad , would give anything to have known him.

LizB62A · 08/03/2020 17:40

Surely it will depend a lot on how old your grandparents were when you were born ?!
Some people have young grandparents, some have older grandparents.

My last grandparent died when I was 33 - the four grandparents were aged between 70 and 83 when they died.

My son is 21 and I think he only has 2 grandparents left.
I don't know for sure as my arse of an ex-husband ghosted my son about 5 years ago, and his parents (my son's paternal grandparents) stopped all contact then too. I think my ex-FIL has probably died by now (he was older), and I lost my mum 3 years ago.

WeAllHaveWings · 08/03/2020 17:41
  1. She was 98.
katielilly · 08/03/2020 17:43

26

OhLook · 08/03/2020 17:45

I lost two before I was born, one at 4 and one at 19.

itsme · 08/03/2020 17:49

My dads parents died in the 70s and mums parents I was 13 and 17. I lost mum when I was 20 and dad at 26. I'm now 34.

Patchworksack · 08/03/2020 17:50

Seven. Both my parents were very late 'surprise' babies so their parents were elderly by the time I came along. I never knew two of them, only remember obe Grandad. I envy that relationship.

Yubaba · 08/03/2020 17:52

I’m 40 and still have 1 of my grandmothers. I lost my 1st grandparent at 27, then at 33 and 37.
DH is 41 and still has 3 grandparents, his grandpa died when he was 4.
My dc have lost both of their grandfathers in the last 3 years

bitheby · 08/03/2020 17:53

A month before I turned 37. My parents were young parents though.

YouJustDoYou · 08/03/2020 17:53
  1. None left. Father and stepfather also gone, as is my first child.
