First world problem I know but I went out this morning to get some cash for the nail bar that don’t take card and not one single one out of about 15 I tried in the area had any.
I’m in zone 1 central London so not anywhere remote!

It often happens at weekends as they don't get filled again until Monday.

Sparklingbrook · 07/03/2020 12:07

Nothing would surprise me!

But it will be no use when you have barricaded yourself in with your loo roll and tins of tomatoes.

bruce43mydog · 07/03/2020 12:23

The same happened in Manchester yesterday 6 different cash machines. Which is unusual

Isbii · 07/03/2020 12:26

Never use cash, last time I used a cash machine has got to be over a year ago now Grin so I'm not and not about to start either!

MajesticWhine · 07/03/2020 12:27

Yes I've been struggling to get cash.

inwood · 07/03/2020 12:29

I never use cash as long as Apple Pay works I'll be ok.

mencken · 07/03/2020 12:45

ah, the too cool for cash brigade. Who are regularly quite screwed when phones go flat, bank networks fail (happens about once a month) or they need an emergency taxi that wants real money.

be cool by all means but don't blubber if it comes back and kicks you in the arse.

there's no cash shortage, perhaps the guy who fills the ATMs has got a cold?

RiddleyW · 07/03/2020 12:51

Too cool for cash is a new one on me. Do you really find you can’t use your bank card once a month? That’s a shit bank but can see why that would make you want to carry cash.

Isbii · 07/03/2020 12:52

Nothing to do with too cool Hmm not using cash is far more convenient for me, if my phone is flat, I have my cards. I've never had my banks go down once a month.

dudsville · 07/03/2020 12:52

I use contactless, never have any cash. I am finally cool. Thanks!

FizzyPink · 07/03/2020 12:53

To be fair I never ever have cash except for once a month when I need my nails doing and the nail bar doesn’t take card

** Sorry bit of a derail, but

IF, and I'm obviously speculating, things got so bad there was a severe cash shortage would this indicate Shit Really Hitting The Fan and cash would become worthless quite soon? So we'd be looking at a bartering system before society breaks down and it's every man for himself?

My imagination is clearly running away with me Grin

RedRed9 · 07/03/2020 12:54

Why have you got a weird chip on your shoulder about card vs cash @mencken ? Who hurt you?

Isbii · 07/03/2020 12:55

Toilet roll will clearly be the new currency WinkGrin

mindproject · 07/03/2020 12:57

Well, the elites don't all have underground bunkers for fun.

Bisforbert · 07/03/2020 13:01

Slightly off topic but nail bars that only take cash can be a red flag for modern slavery

How can people be cashless? I don't get it. I definitely couldn't live without cash. I would get really panicky without cash to fall back on.

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/03/2020 13:05

I just use cash. If I try to keep track on the banking app I get caught out. Cash I can see what I have.

joffreyscoffees · 07/03/2020 13:13

This has happened to me twice this week actually.. although it's the first time in months I've used cash so it's not really an issue for me.

PickAChew · 07/03/2020 13:14

Do you really find you can’t use your bank card once a month? That’s a shit bank but can see why that would make you want to carry cash.

Usually nothing to do with a specific bank. I've often been in the situation where none of the shops in an area can take card payments due to Internet issues. Or an independent trader with a card device that uses 4G can't get a good enough signal at a particular location.

PickAChew · 07/03/2020 13:15

And DS1 doesn't take cards, when I give him his pocket money ;)

MrsHa · 07/03/2020 13:21

Might not be worth hording cash. Colleagues DD works at a local pub that's part of a bug national chain, the only consideration that are taking at the moment re coronavirus is to go cash less as cash is a well known germ fest.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/03/2020 13:23

And DS1 doesn't take cards, when I give him his pocket money ;)

Am now imagining the "too cool for cash" brigade trying to persuade the tooth fairy to take Apply Pay, or berating her for not accepting contactless payments...

Damnthemansavetheempir · 07/03/2020 13:25

Were they actually out of cash or out of order? We have a cash machine at work and have had to have an engineer out at least 3 times a week since the new £20 notes came into circulation as the machine can't cope with them and they get jammed which stops the machine from working

Hoik · 07/03/2020 13:26

Toilet roll will clearly be the new currency

Toilet rolls and little bottles of hand gel, four bottles to a roll and two rolls is equal to a bottle of Dettol spray. Wages will be paid in squares of paper and blobs of gel with a minimum wage of four squares and one blob per hour.
