First world problem I know but I went out this morning to get some cash for the nail bar that don’t take card and not one single one out of about 15 I tried in the area had any.
I’m in zone 1 central London so not anywhere remote!

A friend who was affected by the Australian bush fires suggested getting some cash as the card infrastructure went down in some areas. It's obviously a different scenario here but I can see how problems could arise - if another storm knocks out some of the internet and engineers are in isolation and not working, etc.

I never carry cash .. I mean really never , unless I do the odd cleaning job once every couple weeks and she pays me cash
It's nothing to do with being " cool "I don't see the need because literally every I go accepts card so I don't need cash .
Even ordering takeout , I order from Just Eat and it's card payments online or school dinner for my daughter is cashless and topped up online using a card
I use card for buying a loaf of bread or pint of milk , years ago people wouldn't do this . It's widely accepted now

They’ve had a lot of problems with the ATMs recently as the conversion to the polymer £20 notes hasn’t gone very smoothly. We’ve had a lot of engineer visits lately. They’re full of money but the computer flags an error and shuts itself off.

Thanks for the link bisforbert.

And ... you literally went to about 15 cashpoints and they were empty ?? . I can't comment as I never go to cashpoints but I find it hard to believe that getting cash from a cashpoint is that difficult

FAQs · 07/03/2020 13:31

I never have cash, I have car parking apps and use card for everything. I've no idea why though, just habit.

Gingerkittykat · 07/03/2020 13:33

Can you not get cashback from a shop or cash from a post office counter (I'm not sure if you can withdraw cash from all bank accounts, but you can from Santander)?

DameXanaduBramble · 07/03/2020 13:35

ah, the too cool for cash brigade.

What the chuff are you on about?!!

SunshineDays2019 · 07/03/2020 13:35

Agree with PP, easier to get cashback at a supermarket. You can get up to £50.

H1978 · 07/03/2020 14:04

Happened to me last weekend in a small town, all cash machines said no cash and some smaller shops only take cash and market stalls too Confused

JingsMahBucket · 07/03/2020 15:35

This is just normal for a weekend. Even if it’s not, try getting cash earlier in the week. I would sometimes take out my “weekend cash” on Thursday morning because ATMs may be exhausted by Friday night depending on where I was.

TeacupDrama · 07/03/2020 15:47

I would not hoard cash but if you are in self isolation and a neighbour does a bit of shopping for you they won't have a handy card machine they will want cash, I'm not saying cards aren't generally more convenient but sometimes you just need cash having 5 x £10 notes would do no harm

Spacetree · 07/03/2020 15:55

Feel like that's a situation where a bank transfer would be best!

BlueThursday · 07/03/2020 17:04

I’d agree it’s more likely to be the new £20s causing trouble

WrongKindOfFace · 07/03/2020 17:28

Yes, when I popped into the post office the staff were complaining that the machine keeps going out of service because of the new twenties.

FuckyNel · 07/03/2020 17:35

There was no one in my nail bar today - it’s usually always an hour wait on a Saturday

HaddawayAndShite · 07/03/2020 17:42

ah, the too cool for cash brigade.
There’s always one clown that grits out this unoriginal bullshit.

Actually it’s laziness in this cool kids case 😎

HaddawayAndShite · 07/03/2020 17:42

*trots

Topseyt · 07/03/2020 17:46

We have had this problem around here yesterday, and again today. Ideally I need cash for tomorrow, but could do a bank transfer if really necessary.

I think some people have been hoarding cash. Ridiculous, but nothing would surprise me at the moment.

AlanRickmanFanClub · 07/03/2020 17:50

I mostly use cash when i go shopping and although I don't stock-pile cash, I have an amount tucked away for emergencies.

Nanalisa60 · 07/03/2020 17:55

Nail bars, hairdressers and beauticians, they all want cash!! I wonder if they but all there taking throw the books!!

I’m the same as you this is the only thing I really need cash for!!

DameXanaduBramble · 07/03/2020 19:12

I bank transfer money to my hairdresser, surely thats what you’d do if a neighbour sorted you out with some shopping?

mindutopia · 07/03/2020 19:26

I used to live in a part of the world that not infrequently had a big natural disaster. We were always told to have emergency cash in the first aid kit in case cash machines became inaccessible.

That said, I never did and I almost never use cash and no I don’t really have any now.

RiddleyW · 08/03/2020 07:58

I never use cash ever really. Although I do carry it around, always have about £30-50 which lasts months usually.

Redcherries · 08/03/2020 08:47

I never use cash, I can’t recall the last time I had any!

I use bank transfers, Apple Pay and card. It’s not because I’m too ‘cool’ it’s beca it’s more convenient and money is a bit grim, you don’t know where it’s been or whose nose it could have been up!
