Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - what am I missing?

Is it just me? I don't watch it usually but tuned in last night for a bit and it was awful! Not just cringeworthy but really bad. Putting aside the fact that it's almost as if nothing happened re: Ant and his drink driving, it all just seemed so scripted and awkward and self conscious.

I watched them make Anthony Joshua "prank" various people who had come for a job and felt really uncomfortable. It just wasn't funny. These people needed a job and they were humiliating them, all the while sitting in a little room and "laughing uncontrollably" at their japes like two school bullies. I turned over after that. Maybe I've missed something - am I being really unfair or is it as horrendous as I think it is?

I agree! Didn't like it at all. I hate humiliation tv, which is what the prank felt like. As for the weird drama bit - very odd.

flametrees · 01/03/2020 21:22

Was the guy who was answering questions in win the ads drunk?
Awful programme.

WickedlyPetite · 01/03/2020 21:28

It's utter shite. ITV needs to refresh their talent pool, it's pretty awful in general, same faces, same old shite.

LIZS · 01/03/2020 21:34

It has run its course and seems to be written for a tipsy audience. The laughter seems increasing forced.

PuppyMonkey · 01/03/2020 21:38

I’ve always wanted to like it - used to watch with the kids and they loved it. But never really got the love myself and thought it quite boring.

I saw some of last night and my main thought was everything was set up and staged including that house with the poster in the window. They so knew they were going to be on telly. And I thought the bloke who did the adverts quiz seemed to already know he was going to be doing it to.Confused

I could be wrong. But once I started thinking “this is all set up,” I couldn’t unthink it.

DD who is now nearly 13 lost interest after ten minutes.

SouthWestmom · 01/03/2020 21:39

You can apply to win the ads - thought this was common knowledge?

keepingbees · 01/03/2020 21:39

I agree it's run its course. It's such a long show too I don't know why they drag it out for so long, it feels massively padded out. Resorting to humiliation for humour is low too.

Here

Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - what am I missing?
PuppyMonkey · 01/03/2020 21:44

Oh right, so you apply and know you’re on it? I didn’t know.

But they do that bit where it looks like the camera picks someone out at random.

Rocketinapocket · 01/03/2020 21:47

It’s for numpties

DullPortraits · 01/03/2020 21:47

I missed last nights - what happened with anne marie? She is on twitter making public apologies and trying to get her segment removed off catch up?? What did she do?

TreeTopTim · 01/03/2020 21:51

I haven't watched it in years. It ran it's course about 5 years ago

FourDecades · 01/03/2020 21:53

It was on itv this afternoon. Was most confused!

PuppyMonkey · 01/03/2020 21:54

I saw the Anne Marie bit. It was like a sort of karate theme with Ant and Dec doing silly moves, with a black background so they had daft fake leg movements and stuff? It was crap, but no need to apologise I don’t think, unless I missed something?

LIZS · 01/03/2020 21:55

That was probably the least juvenile part!

WarmSausageTea · 01/03/2020 21:57

@DullPortraits - here’s a link to the Anne-Marie story. Short version is that while she was singing, Ant & Dec were arsing around wearing outfits that included ‘rising sun’ bandanas.

Oh right, so you apply and know you’re on it? I didn’t know.

I don't think you know you're definitely going to be picked, just that you're in with a chance.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 21:58

I am back in the uk temporarily and saw this for the first time yesterday - utter dross.

flingaling · 01/03/2020 22:00

I suppose it's all part of the same thing - lazy script writing resorting to racial stereotypes? Either way I just don't get it. And I found it difficult to watch. I agree with you LIZS - the laughter feels really forced.

Proud to be a numpty then.
It's good old fashioned Saturday night telly entertainment you can watch with the whole family, we enjoy it Smile

TheReluctantCountess · 01/03/2020 22:01

I thought she might have been apologising for her awful miming!

BonnesVacances · 01/03/2020 22:01

My friend was on Win the Ads. She had her photo taken on the way into the studio, but didn't know she had been selected to play until the finger pointed at her. She also gambled and lost, so came away with nothing except some Ant & Dec toilet roll. So that bit is legit.

flingaling · 01/03/2020 22:05

It's good old fashioned Saturday night telly entertainment

But is it? Did you really enjoy watching those people make fools of themselves because they needed a job?

Patroclus · 01/03/2020 22:08

Who the fuck complains about this shit? the rising sun flag is still used all the time
