Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - what am I missing?

Is it just me? I don't watch it usually but tuned in last night for a bit and it was awful! Not just cringeworthy but really bad. Putting aside the fact that it's almost as if nothing happened re: Ant and his drink driving, it all just seemed so scripted and awkward and self conscious.

I watched them make Anthony Joshua "prank" various people who had come for a job and felt really uncomfortable. It just wasn't funny. These people needed a job and they were humiliating them, all the while sitting in a little room and "laughing uncontrollably" at their japes like two school bullies. I turned over after that. Maybe I've missed something - am I being really unfair or is it as horrendous as I think it is?

Id have more respet for celebrities if they came out and said Get over it

APatchyTomCat · 01/03/2020 22:09

I like Ant and Dec mostly, but I like them being Ant and Dec. Not Morecambe and Wise, or Noel Edmonds and Blobby etc. I find SNT cringey.

I watched Gogglebox on Fri showing last weeks segment with the Pussycat Dolls, and thought it was lame as fuck

Dowser · 01/03/2020 22:13

Philip Schofield, holly, ant and Dec , tess and Claudia and the rest all part of the james grant agency who seem to have itv on lockdown.

It’s just awful that there’s no new talent on that channel just same old...boring crap
We just Netflix now

Canshopwillshop · 01/03/2020 22:14

Watched it with 13 year old DS and thought it was good, lighthearted entertainment.

Qwerty543 · 01/03/2020 22:49

People are free to turn over. Plenty of other stuff on. Ant and Dec have enough fans that they will keep on making light hearted entertainment that I can watch with my children.

Passthecake30 · 01/03/2020 22:53

My kids (10&11) love it, and laugh hysterically the whole way through. Me not so much!

AnyFucker · 01/03/2020 22:58

It's telly to kill your brain cells. Most Saturday night "entertainment" is

LemonFrenzy · 01/03/2020 23:25

I agree OP just 2 egotistical men who think everyone thinks they're funny but they're not. Had their day but it's old hat now.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 01/03/2020 23:38

It's telly to kill your brain cells

That explains a lot then. And there was me thinking it was my liking of wine that was doing me in. All the time it was Ant and Dec.

Sugarpea123 · 01/03/2020 23:43

Agree with other pp, TV for numpties.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 01/03/2020 23:53

Agree with other pp, TV for numpties.

Whaddy'a you watch then? I'm assuming something highbrow.

Likethebattle · 02/03/2020 00:26

I can’t stand those two talentless wee fuds! I can never understand the appeal and end up turning over whenever they appear.

Costacoffeeplease · 02/03/2020 00:47

I think they’ve really had their day now. I haven’t watched the current series but previous episodes have been enough. It’s just embarrassing now

Jojoanna · 02/03/2020 06:22

I didn’t like the humiliation of people applying for a job mist of it was rubbish esp the end with Ann Marie they were embarrassing

flingaling · 02/03/2020 07:09

Thanks all.

I'm aware that I'm free to turn over and turn over I did. I won't be watching it again. I just wondered whether other people were as uncomfortable about watching three millionaires humiliate a group of people needing a job. To me that isn't Saturday night, family entertainment and it makes me sad that some of you think it is, but really I came on to find out if I was the only one who felt that way and what reassures me slightly is that I'm not!

We enjoy watching it as a family.....our 5 year old loves it and it's nice to have a programme we can all watch together. We're far from numpties.

People are such snobs about TV these days.

BasilDiffuser · 02/03/2020 07:22

I’ve never ever understood the appeal of ant and Dec.

DullPortraits · 02/03/2020 07:26

Thanks for explaining the anne marie thing! Smile

Sagradafamiliar · 02/03/2020 07:29

Ant looked rat arsed.

flingaling · 02/03/2020 07:37

Goodness, yes, I'm sure we're all missing "the good old days" where they let necrophiles hang medals on children in the interest of family entertainment.

OP posts:
Costacoffeeplease · 02/03/2020 07:43

Snobbish? No
Personal opinion? Absolutely

SueEllenMishke · 02/03/2020 07:49

What are you talking about fling? Did I say that?
But referring to people as numpties and judging people for watching a programme you don't like or understand the appeal makes you sound like a snob. There's no need.

Do people need to watch programmes from a pre-approved list to not be considered a numpty?

I enjoy SNT but I also love only connect, university challenge and history documentaries.....where does that place me on the 'numpty' scale?

SueEllenMishke · 02/03/2020 07:51

Costa saying you don't like something is a personal opinion.... absolutely fine, we all have them. The world would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

Calling someone a name for liking something is judgemental and in this case snobbish.

flingaling · 02/03/2020 07:54

I didn't use the word numpty. I didn't call anyone anything. But I don't entirely disagree.

I did watch with DD, and I wondered if the people going for job interviews were temping for a 1 day job of cooking at an event, and ITV paid the wage?

Confused
