Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway - what am I missing?

Is it just me? I don't watch it usually but tuned in last night for a bit and it was awful! Not just cringeworthy but really bad. Putting aside the fact that it's almost as if nothing happened re: Ant and his drink driving, it all just seemed so scripted and awkward and self conscious.

I watched them make Anthony Joshua "prank" various people who had come for a job and felt really uncomfortable. It just wasn't funny. These people needed a job and they were humiliating them, all the while sitting in a little room and "laughing uncontrollably" at their japes like two school bullies. I turned over after that. Maybe I've missed something - am I being really unfair or is it as horrendous as I think it is?

I never said you did fling

Hoohaahoo · 02/03/2020 08:02

I think it’s a bit rude to say it’s for numpties. I don’t enjoy it but that doesn’t mean the rest of my watching is highbrow.

I just don’t like them anymore. Like others I find them very forced and just not very funny. I prefer to watch comedians, give me would I lie to you or taskmaster any day.

JillAmanda · 02/03/2020 08:02

I love it 😳

Biancadelrioisback · 02/03/2020 08:07

We watch it. I'm a fan of Ant and Dec. If you dont like it, that's absolutely fine. Live and let live

Roussette · 02/03/2020 08:09

It is dire, absolutely dire. But maybe my memory is clouded because my DCs are now adult and not at home, and when they were young, they used to watch Noel's House Party with Mr. Blobby and they (and I) used to love it!
I do think it was more innocent fun though.

The Anthony Joshua segment was just awful. It wasn't even funny what he was fed by A&D to say.

Chickychickydodah · 02/03/2020 08:11

I hate all the prank stuff anyway, it’s so cringe now, YouTube is full of this shit now. Enough! ...

ShatnersWig · 02/03/2020 08:12

Haven't watched it since the first couple of episodes of the very first series when I said "Meh, it's basically Noel's House Party 20 years on without the 'setting' of Crinkley Bottom".

GrockleRock · 02/03/2020 08:22

I do think Stephen Mulhurn is really funny though Shock

flingaling · 02/03/2020 08:26

I do think Stephen Mulhurn is really funny though

Actually I have to agree with this. I didn't watch long enough to see him on Saturday but I've seen him elsewhere and warmed to him, yes.

I've been watching it for years and loved it , the new series not so much.

The whole point of programmes like these is surely that they're meant to be funny and entertaining . I think it no longer is , it's past its sell by date unfortunately .

ShirleyPhallus · 02/03/2020 08:37

It’s awful.

I imagine the typical watcher is someone who thinks that doing Gangnam Style at a wedding is still funny and “tells it like it is”

SueEllenMishke · 02/03/2020 08:39

Shirley or in my case a university academic with a PhD who has never danced Gangham Style in my life.

Nice to see #bekind lasted all of two weeks.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/03/2020 08:40

Hey! There's nowt wrong with doing Gangnam style.
Maybe try it instead of sitting there cat bum mouth at the dancers...
Although I prefer a bit of Cha Cha Slide myself lol

ShirleyPhallus · 02/03/2020 08:45

Not what I would consider the typical watcher are you then Wink

SueEllenMishke · 02/03/2020 08:50

How about you ease off the judgement the eh Shirley?
There's really no need.

Oh yes.....cha cha slide. I taught that to my 5 yr old over xmas ans he's had it on repeat ever since 🙈

JillAmanda · 02/03/2020 09:07

I think Stephen Mulhern is an excellent presenter.

Sagradafamiliar · 02/03/2020 09:14

Stephen Mulhern has been under appreciated and under rated for years in my opinion! Glad he's finally getting his own stuff to front instead of being tacked onto after shows/spin offs/ wheeled out to make Ant and Dec look better.

Cantdecidewhere · 02/03/2020 09:49

I've really enjoyed the show over the past few years but this years show just isn't clicking for me. The format is the same, the jokes are the same....but...somethings not working.... maybe it's me, I just can't look at Ant in the same way now after everything's that's happened and he's bouncing about the stage like a 10yr old on skittles.

Costacoffeeplease · 02/03/2020 10:12

I also can’t bear the Santander ads with ant and Dec, as if they have to worry about mortgages Hmm so patronising

mencken · 02/03/2020 11:11

wouldn't watch anyway as one of them is a drunk driver. I change channel if even the trailer comes on!

CalmdownJanet · 02/03/2020 11:15

It's gone downhill big time. Even the couple that got a free fucking house last week could barely manage to look interested, it was weird.

Nowayorhighway · 02/03/2020 12:28

It’s always been crap.

MrsEsss · 02/03/2020 14:39

That was weird wasn't it, CalmDownJanet? They didn't look excited at all to have won a new house. Maybe they were just overwhelmed?

Extracurricularfatigue · 02/03/2020 14:44

We've all been watching the Crackerjack reboot together. Sam and Mark are a lovely pair who feel like Ant and Dec before it all got complicated. All of us love it, even the teenager. We were bored of SNT.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/03/2020 14:47

It's so cringe, like your drunk Dad dancing to Come on Eileen at 11.30pm at a wedding.

Just cringy and awful.
