Stick your middle finger up (i.e - swearing) without pinning your index finger and the others down with your thumb? I can’t and have just been told I’m a freak for not being able to do so yet I don’t get how it’s possible as my index finger always twitches like it wants to cohabit with the middle finger to join an equally offensive V sign

Just about with my right hand. Not quite with my left.
However I can't keep my ring finger up on my right hand without my pinky finger also being up. Even if I hold it. I don't know when I lost this ability, but I used to be able to do it as was a Brownie and a Guide.

I can and also play piano and am double jointed. Problem is, being so mobile leads to pain later in life, or so it seems.

I can and also my ring finger. I am not a pianist or hypermobile. Indeed, I am known for my lack of flexibility (apart from when pregnant! I could put my hands flat on the floor stood up the day before I gave birth. Never when not pg). I shall delight in my new found flexible fingers.

You in theory should be able to do it with you index and middle finger, but if you try to stick your ring finger only up, it ought to take your little finger with it because they share a nerve (iirc) which then branches in the hand to go to each finger.
I can do the middle finger with thumb out with both hands but then i've had a fair bit of practice

Yes I can, but it takes a bit of effort.

If I have all my fingers up and try to pull down my little finger on my right hand, then it takes the ring finger down with it. But if I do the same with my left hand, the ring finger stays put.
