If you"re 50, how long is your hair?

I've recently gone from longish to shoulder length (one hand length from hairline at back). Thinking of going shorter, just long enough to tie back, or even shorter, but is it an aging thing?

Dye my hair at home for grey, although have lightened by a shade or two from almost black.

Don't know when people have their hair cut shorter, don't want to go too granny too soon. So if you're 50 (give or take a year or two) how long is your hair?

My hair is mid shoulder-blade length but I usually wear it tied up. It’s been this length or more for the last 28 years.

reluctantbrit · 13/02/2020 21:08

I am 47 but wear my hair really short since I am 26, it just suits me a lot better than the bob I had before.

I have quite fine hair, long hair just hangs around and looks absolutely awful.

GreyishDays · 13/02/2020 21:09

Bra strap length is bra strap at back @Tombakersscarf so nipple and a bit lower.

52, hair almost waist band. I don’t plan to cut it.

WingingItSince1973 · 13/02/2020 23:15

@weehoo wow your hair is gorgeous. Makes me want to go short again. Just spent 18 months growing out my pixie cut. Its shoulder length now and I'm 47 soon. But would love short again 🤣

beingchampion · 13/02/2020 23:28

I've never heard of bra strap length, but that's roughly where mine was before the recent trim/chop and a perfect description. I don't like it now, it's all triangular and frizzy, either it goes shorter, or I have a pony tail until it is long enough again.

@GreyishDays thanks for the explanation. At no point did it occur to me it meant at the back, which given its hair makes no sense really that I didn't think of that!
Amazed no one has mentioned "menopausal red" - I like this colour but that description does put me off Blush

Cocolapew · 13/02/2020 23:37

Short, I've had a pixie for years. I'm growing it out atm, I shaved it to go grey. I'm growing my layers longer but not sure how long I want it.

I'm 59 and I've just had mine cut as short as I ever have it - shoulder length. It then grows to about bra strap I suppose - 4 inches or so - before I get round to having it done again. It's straight and naturally blonde (the odd white doesn't really show). It looks ok I reckon, it'd do nothing if it was short as it's fine (though not thin)

PickAChew · 13/02/2020 23:57

Roughly chin length, depending how curly it's being. Longest it's been since my 30s.

PickAChew · 14/02/2020 00:14

Also undyed. I've been greying since my teens but it's still quite dark, with lots of silver sparkle and a few steely streaks.

SapphireSeptember · 14/02/2020 00:29

To all the longer haired older ladies out there I salute you. Grin I'm only 31, but I can't imagine having short hair (mine is mid-thigh length.) I know a lady in her 50s with very long, thick wavy hair and it is beautiful. Envy (Mine isn't very thick and grows in a point, and I'm growing a white steak at the front.)

bringincrazyback · 14/02/2020 00:30

I'm 52 and it's a little way past my shoulders. The only rule with hair is wear it how you want to wear it, imho - age is irrelevant. I have a friend who's fond of saying 'no woman over 40 should have hair past her shoulders', but I think that's outdated bollocks.

Greenandpleasanter · 14/02/2020 00:35

I think it depends on your hair and your facial structure. Mine is quite fine and it does look ageing on me when it gets too long. I've noticed people with thicker or curlier hair don't have the same affect. Mine's just below my jaw bone.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 14/02/2020 01:03

Bra strap length.
I'm sick of it. Want it all cut short, it really pisses me off.

Warmfirechocolate · 14/02/2020 01:14

I’m interested as to why some people think it is ageing to have long hair when older?

Some people have said it drags down their face.
Some people have said that their hair is fine and it doesn’t look as good long anymore.
Is it harder to keep the colour maybe? Although some women look fab with long silver hair.

I guess also part of it is that we aren’t supposed to look sexy aged 50+
And long hair = sexy and youth I guess?

I hope mine doesn’t drag down my face. Which feels a bit like it’s sliding off as it is.
I’m really lucky as it is very thick and full and loose natural waves, so it does make me feel younger.

I’ve also had a great mid length hair cut a few years ago, with layers which was amazing. But I had to commit to keeping up an expensive hair cut.

I do feel cheaper haircuts look particularly bad as I age. At the moment I’m just letting it be long but well conditioned and brushed.

mnthrowaway202020 · 14/02/2020 01:51

I’m only in my early 20s but my hair is naturally fine, I have had multiple highlight sessions so it’s now breaking off too. Fine hair can certainly age you. If you have healthy long hair in your 59’s, definitely hold onto it.

HerRoyalNotness · 14/02/2020 02:02

@Cocolapew your hair looks amazing!

I’ve had short hair since early 20s, now 47 and it’s just above my bra strap. Mostly because I haven’t found a decent hair dresser where I live now. And affordability of keeping short hair looking good. Not sure what to do with it tbh. But I don’t go anywhere much and if I do it looks ok blow dried and straightened

Cillmantain · 14/02/2020 02:19

I am 55 with an undercut pixie.
I love it and it suits me.
My 2 friends have shoulder length hair.
Age is only a number why should it dictate a hair style
Have the length you love.
Make sure it's in good condition
Never mind the begrudgers

Cocolapew · 14/02/2020 09:29

Thank you HerRoyalNotness Smile

Angie6868 · 14/02/2020 09:30

Chin length

Dowser · 14/02/2020 09:46

67 and it’s a couple of inches be,ow my shoulders.
Seems to be a good length for wearing it up or down.
It’s still quite brown, blonde highlights and a bit of grey..I just wish it was thicker.
Mostly worn in a ponytail with a hair ornament in it..I hate it flying around in the wind.
See..if it was thicker it wouldn’t do that that as much

Dowser · 14/02/2020 09:47

I think you see a lot more longer hair on older women now than you Did when I grew up in the 50s

TowerRingInferno · 14/02/2020 09:51

Short layered bob.

More about my hair than my age though. I have naturally curly hair, but if it gets longer the weight pulls the curls down and it just looks unkempt rather than curly, and my head looks like a massive triangle shape.

slinkysaluki · 14/02/2020 17:07

My hair I'm 51
