If you"re 50, how long is your hair?

I've recently gone from longish to shoulder length (one hand length from hairline at back). Thinking of going shorter, just long enough to tie back, or even shorter, but is it an aging thing?

Dye my hair at home for grey, although have lightened by a shade or two from almost black.

Don't know when people have their hair cut shorter, don't want to go too granny too soon. So if you're 50 (give or take a year or two) how long is your hair?

I used to have hair to the middle of my back and it was the thing I got most compliments for so I felt obliged to keep it even though it was a real faff. Then I noticed that it started dragging my face down and making me look older. A few years ago I had it chopped into a bob long enough to tie back and I wear it now tied up every day. It's so much easier and makes me look younger. Obviously it depends on your face shape and how nice your hair is but I see a lot of women with long hair that they're obviously very emotionally attached to, but it's doing them absolutely no favours. I have a friend younger than me who can sit on her hair, but her hair is HORRIBLE. It's thin and mousy brown and full of split ends because she's so proud of how long it is that she can't bear to even get it trimmed. When she wears a jacket, the ends of it stick out the bottom like a tail. The hairstyle I think is most aging is short hair all over that leaves women with spiky bits on top.

I'm 48, and have waist length silver/white hair. No plans to cut it or dye it!

Zenithbear · 13/02/2020 18:54

Bra strap length and going a lovely light ash blonde/grey which is the nicest colour my hair as been since I was a child.
No way am I chopping it off.

49, naturally curly hair, cut from bra strap length to graduated Bob about 9 month ago. I love it.

Yellredder · 13/02/2020 19:05

Short bob - but only because it doesn't grow very fast and is baby fine. Always been like that - would love to go v short, but I'd just look bald.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/02/2020 19:05

55, short bob style.

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 13/02/2020 19:12

Couple of years off 50. Hair is collarbone length. I look like a boy if it’s short so I will be keeping it long

YogaLite · 13/02/2020 19:12

Yes, over 50 and almost bra strap (I call it nipple length Grin.
My hair was too short for years and it didn't do me any favours, longer hair frames my face and people say it suits me better and I look younger.

Tombakersscarf · 13/02/2020 19:13

I don't think the idea of cutting your hair when you got older OP was that you should look like a "granny" but that you would look better with a shorter style at that age.
I desperately want to know what bra strap length is (to reach where your bra strap starts on your shoulder, or the length of the strap?)
I am in two minds about my hair and keen to see the results of this thread

Tombakersscarf · 13/02/2020 19:15

Nipple length on my would be somewhere near my knees Blush

Prepenultimate · 13/02/2020 19:17

52- just past my shoulders

Notwiththeseknees · 13/02/2020 19:17

Im 56 and my hair is nearly bra strap length. Highlighted blonde (with grey bits grrrrr).

BadEyeBri · 13/02/2020 19:18

I'm 40 with a big under cut and side cut. My hair is half way down my back. Occasionally it's also bright red. Or pink. Do whatever makes you feel great

EuroMillionsWinner · 13/02/2020 19:18

Mine is to the middle of my back. I hate going to salons or having it cut so it's staying this way. My facial features are also far too strong and big to suit short hair. I dye it as it's 100% grey and now it's just the dark brown it was when I was younger. It's very thick and wavy. I put it in a high pony to work out. I'd never have it short.

DramaAlpaca · 13/02/2020 19:19

I have sort of a long pixie. My hair is ridiculously fine & I've never had it long.

Warmfirechocolate · 13/02/2020 19:21

My hair is long, and I think I look much better with it long. I take good care of it and it’s my crowning glory. It makes me feel good about myself as my face ages, my hair doesn’t.

I don’t care if anyone else doesn’t like it. I’m not out to impress young things anymore.

Pipandmum · 13/02/2020 19:22

I am 57 have a choppy shoulder length bob (I have thick wavy hair). Started going grey in my late teens so dye it. I'd like to go natural but unless slim and a snappy dresser it's just aging in my opinion.

Bargebill19 · 13/02/2020 19:23

Very short pixie crop here. Purely due to practicalities and I look younger (less grey no time or £ to dye)

Lailaha · 13/02/2020 19:24

I can sit on mine, but as it's been everything from crew cut to waist length in the past, it's now the longest it's ever been. It grows fast, though - it was cut to just below my jaw six years ago, and I have about two inches off every year to keep it in good condition.

But it is getting thinner with age, and the only reason it's so long at the moment is that I've never previously been able to get it past my waist. It needs to go back up there, I think - it's not long hair per se that's ageing, but long, thinning hair definitely is imo.

Graphista · 13/02/2020 19:27

I’ll be 48 this year, my hair is long enough that I can grab it if I put my hand around to where it falls at my back so quite long.

My mother thinks this is not appropriate for someone of my age, she also hates that I don’t dye it anymore and have allowed the grey through.

I really don’t suit my hair short and find it far easier to manage long it’s mostly tied up anyway but I like having options.

Don’t go by your age go by your own preference.

As it happens my mum conveniently forgets that my great gran had waist length hair her whole adult life. Not unusual for that generation (born late 1880’s I think) she wore in a bun for work inc housework but wore it down the rest of the time and she looked amazing!

Nothing wrong with short hair per se if it suits you but silly to have a certain haircut purely because of age.

My mum doesn’t think she’s done that but she has a fairly short bob and I notice most women her age (70’s) have that style. I think she (they?) think they’re not ageing themselves by their hair as not the “shampoo and set” my grans opted for but we tend to stick to a style we found suited us in our youth (I’m afraid I’m guilty of that here too) and my grans (would be in their 90’s/100’s now) had that big curl “shampoo and set” style in their teens and 20’s

MissCherryCakeyBun - I envy you! I really want to go either pillar box red or electric blue but I’m not up to the maintenance unfortunately.

What I am struggling badly with is it's thinning badly at the temples.

Lostintransfixation · 13/02/2020 19:29

It's pretty much anything goes generally speaking. I read that 'middle aged women' now go for a blonde bob and that this style and colour is the most age identifying look. Since reading this I have noticed it. If you have thick hair or glossy fine hair why not have it the length you want! However my hair became drier and thinner. I had it bra length then shoulder skimming but because of the condition it was just 'meh'. I now have a short style that is much more statement stylish. As someone told me from 'a bit boring to wow'. So back to what I originally said. Decide on what you like and what looks good. My middle aged friends of the same age generally have one length chin length or collar bone length hair. I know one other person who is over 45 who has an asymmetric style. It looks fab. Come to think of it, everyone else has one length hair....must be the new blue rinse and perm!

EnidButton · 13/02/2020 19:30

Don't know when people have their hair cut shorter

It's more if not when. The days of getting a short perm when you turn 40 are long gone thank god. You have what you like and what you think suits you.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/02/2020 19:32

49, just past shoulder length.

Craftycorvid · 13/02/2020 19:32

53, it’s bra strap length. Used to be waist length but sadly menopause messed with it’s condition and growth rate. I had a long wispy fringe cut in a while back as my hair was looking very sorry for itself along the parting line. I think its recovering a bit now but not sure I’ll ever get the length back 🙁 My mum still subscribes to a long list of ‘women over 40 shouldn’t....’ If I subscribed I’d be rocking a naice short perm, pastel twinsets and no make-up.

EnidButton · 13/02/2020 19:34

Anyone have a picture of the blonde bob that's popular with women in their 70's? Someone in rl mentioned that to me too and I can't picture it.
