If you"re 50, how long is your hair?

I've recently gone from longish to shoulder length (one hand length from hairline at back). Thinking of going shorter, just long enough to tie back, or even shorter, but is it an aging thing?

Dye my hair at home for grey, although have lightened by a shade or two from almost black.

Don't know when people have their hair cut shorter, don't want to go too granny too soon. So if you're 50 (give or take a year or two) how long is your hair?

I'm 55, and have hair nearly down to my bra strap. I often thought I should cut my hair short as I got older, but think that is mainly down to the fact that when I was younger, most older people had short hair, even a blue rinse lllolll! Thank God things have changed. I tried a shorter cut a while ago but I looked like a Yorkshire terrier, with a turkey neck Grin you should have what you are comfortable with. Anything goes these days

Willow2017 · 13/02/2020 19:37

Mine is to just above my bum. Had it trimmed recently just to get it all one length. Dyed red auburny red

Age doesn't matter a jot. i see women with all colours of hair and all lengths at work.and many are much older than 50. Who cares what age you are just do whatever you want with your hair and dont let anyone tell you.there is an age limit.

weehoo · 13/02/2020 19:42

Mines as short as I can possibly get it, plus bleached/pink

I look way better now than I did with longer hair!

Oh and 50 next year

48, Mid boob length (before I take the bra off Grin). I’ve actually been growing it and most people think it suits me better now. Still good condition, I do get my roots done because I’ve got more dark than grey, but I might take the Silver plunge one day.

SistersOfPercy · 13/02/2020 19:44

My Mum was 82 when she died and could still sit on her hair. It was beautiful and she wore it in buns and with lovely accessories. Everyone commented on it.

Charleymouse · 13/02/2020 19:48

Age 50
Hair down past my waist.
Highlighted to hide grey

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/02/2020 19:49

I absolutely hate the use of “granny” as a synonym for “frumpy”. It’s so ageist and misogynist.

I’m mid 50s but not a granny, by the way, so have no personal axe to grind.

NightsOfCabiria · 13/02/2020 19:49

51 and bra strap length. It’s still thick and shiny and has kept its colour so I dont see anything wrong with keeping it like this.

I used to have very long hair and sometimes feel wistful about that. People would come up to me and touch it and remark on how glossy and straight it was. This was back in the 1990s when straight hair was in.

Brainwashed · 13/02/2020 19:51

Bra strap length, dyed blonde to hide the grey and I wear it in 2 plaits most of the time...probably breaking all sorts of "rules" but I don't care!

slinkysaluki · 13/02/2020 19:52

Im 51 and its below my shoulders

slinkysaluki · 13/02/2020 19:57

Honeyroar mines the same length as yours, thick and auburn, one if my best features also ive been told. I had it almost waist length in my 20's, cut it to a just above shoulder bob after having my first child, then went short, bob again and now back to long 🙄

I like it long but its such a chore to wash and dry as its so thick snd coarse. I have to admit to sometimes only washing it once a week, twice at the most !

weegiemum · 13/02/2020 19:57

49 with shoulder length - like many others not prepared to go too granny yet! I dye it at home (well, one of the dds dyes it for me!) and am also not ready to go grey yet, though I know several women just a little older than me with awesome grey hair - one of them also has longer hair than me and looks awesome!

Redcherries · 13/02/2020 20:01

I love this thread, I’m about to turn 40 and keep debating if I should be shortening my waist length red hair, following the too old for long hair rule, I’ll keep rocking it like you lot.

Interestingly in my early 30s I shared an office with women mid to late 20s who all thought I was too old for long hair, yup, early 30s. Ancient 🤔

EsmeShelby · 13/02/2020 20:04

Long bob, I have grown my grey out and cut it shorter to decrease the time I had with old colour in it. I like it now, it is in much better condition and I will grow it longer again.

notacooldad · 13/02/2020 20:07

55 and and just past my shoulder blades.
I like it this length.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/02/2020 20:14

I'm nearing 60 and my hair is short, not because I like it that way but because it's not the type of hair that looks good long (thínk over cooked spaghetti around sticky out ears).

A work mate (same age as me) has naturally blond waves about bra strap length.

DSM in her seventies has straight shoulder length hair.

There is no age limit on hair length.

Pixxie7 · 13/02/2020 20:17

60 plus shoulder length.

user000000000001 · 13/02/2020 20:21

I’m 31 and just to add my opinion, a few women in their 40s/ 50s/ 60s who I work with I have noticed have started to wear their hair longer, and they look younger for it. The short crop can be ageing imo.

Ohhgreat · 13/02/2020 20:21

Of those I know:
One age 50 has a pixie cut, has done for the last 10+ years
One age 49 has straight dark brown hair to the top of their shoulders
One (bit older at 60) has curly brown hair (highlighted) to their shoulders
One age 52 has hair down to her waist.
So in short, whatever hair they blimmin well like!

Laska2Meryls · 13/02/2020 20:21

weehoo Pink is great,.. Here's my Granny hair Smile

Laska2Meryls · 13/02/2020 20:23

am 62....

Xanadu58 · 13/02/2020 20:25

My hair is a chin length bob , I'm 51

Jux · 13/02/2020 20:44

61 and hair is bra strap length - not through choice, because hairdressers round here are so expensive. I'd like it to be short. I used to have bum-length hair when I was young but decided - when I was weeks away from 30 - that I was too old to have long hair. Had it all cut off for a birthday present at a really niche place in Knightbridge where they did an absolutely beautiful job. I never had it long again,, until now. I am working on my dh to get him to cut it at least to shoulder length. He's getting closer to agreeing!

I do find it quite amusing that I used to think 30 was too old for long hair Grin. I don't think that any more, but I really really don't like having long hair myself.

Bonkersblond · 13/02/2020 20:58

Have gone from long to short, back to long since I was about 18, sticking with a short layered bob now, I doubt I’ll ever grow it long again as I just feel like it just pulls my features down, at 53 it suits my jawline shorter, almost feels like a face lift having it cut!

missyB1 · 13/02/2020 21:02

51 and a pixie cut, it’s dark auburn and I love it!
