Oooh wonderful photo today segregate - I've also loved your daily photos and words.

Breathmiller · 31/01/2020 08:02

Thank you everyone. What an amazing place of support it has been.

See you tomorrow, folks .

ColouringPencils · 31/01/2020 08:38

Hi, everyone. Well done to us! I am also feeling quite daunted about what tomorrow might bring. I haven't posted much, but have been reading along and really appreciated the support. I would quite like to just stay huddled on this rock! Weirdly, I have been telling myself, it's okay, you can have a drink any time you want, but you don't have to have one tomorrow. So I think I probably won't drink tomorrow.

My DH has also been doing it and he had been drinking a lot in the past couple of years. He has been like a man transformed this month. I am really hoping it will encourage/enable him to cut down long term. I don't know if I can say anything, as that might be pretty annoying when you have just achieved something you thought you never would and reached the finish line, wouldn't it? I did tell him I have loved spending time with him this month, our relationship is so much better, and he smells much nicer too!

nibdedibble · 31/01/2020 09:38

To my astonishment I have just joined our local gym. I feel like I've worked hard on establishing a no-drinking habit in January, time to get a grip on losing weight in February! Can I work out five times a week for four weeks? (I work from home so have flexibility, which I have not been making the most of!)
(Also, I have an outfit I need to be able to wear in the second week of March so that's my secondary motivation...groan...what a cliché!)

HisBetterHalf · 31/01/2020 09:51

Well I cant believe its the last day of January and. I made it!!!
When I started DJ I planned to do it for as long as possible but expected that I would cave in at some point. I told everyone I had started DJ as that kind of kept me going, in that I didnt want to say I had given in if someone asked me if I was still doing DJ. I am so proud of myself. I feel better in myself. I want to keep it going but with the ability to have a glass or two on the odd occasion. Thats the bit that worries me, that I will fall back in to bad habits. However, I am going to use the money saved from not buying alcohol as an incentive and put it towards weekends away somewhere nice.

AdaKirkby · 31/01/2020 10:31

Huge pat on the back for everyone! I’ve bought a bottle of posh elderflower fizz to celebrate with this evening.

I’m going to do the 300 day challenge but I’m breaking it down into smaller chunks (so that I get more badges Smile). I got my dry January one this morning, so I’ve just changed my target to 50 dry days.

SparklingLime · 31/01/2020 11:14

First post - have been reading and finding it very helpful. Thank you. The whole DJ concept has been very motivating, and I’m so glad I’ve done it (started late so still got the weekend to go). I was on a bottle most days so really not healthy.
One problem is that I don’t really get hangovers unless I have loads, and I haven’t felt physically better at all during DJ (tho I do have other health problems probably interfering with that).
I haven’t had cravings really, it’s like once I’d decided a switch went in my brain - no alcohol. I’m continuing into February but I feel like the switch could easily flick the other way... I don’t feel secure in my not drinking.

I can't remember if @Breathmiller (I think) mentioned the new Tara Brach book or the older one, but anyway I just noticed Radical Acceptance is currently free on Kindle, if anyone is interested

Breathmiller · 31/01/2020 11:45

Brilliant. It's a great book. Ive jsut finished her Radical Compassion (which is the new book) Challenge. I did it with friends as a support group. Another reason why these groups and community really help.

ColouringPencils · 31/01/2020 12:21

I have downloaded Radical Acceptance and look forward to starting it. I have done a few of her guided meditations before and she seems very wise!

Breathmiller · 31/01/2020 18:02

How we all doing?
I'm celebrating tonight (dry January - not the other thing) with a couple of Heineken 0.0.

Cheers all you dry Adventurers.

jakeyboy1 · 31/01/2020 19:13

Boom we made it!!!

I'm going to keep going a little bit longer for 6 weeks - remembering the fatty liver conversation!

It has definitely made me reassess my relationship with alcohol and I think I will drink less moving forward. Well I hope so!

ColouringPencils · 31/01/2020 19:27

I have treated myself to a bottle of Hardy's AF Chardonnay for the last night. It looks very yellow...

Breathmiller · 31/01/2020 20:06

colouringpencils

Let me know what it's like? I have a feeling I have tried it before but didn't like it. But maybe it's improved

ColouringPencils · 31/01/2020 20:21

Actually it's not too bad! It doesn't taste anything like Chardonnay, but then none of the AF drinks are very convincing.

Breathmiller · 31/01/2020 20:51

Thanks. I might give it another go at some point. I do wish they could come up with a decent red alternative. That's the thing I miss the most.

I'm not much of a beer or cider drinker so the AF versions do me when I feel like I need an alternative. But there is nothing that resembles red wine thats worth drinking

myhandsareverycold · 31/01/2020 20:58

Boom!

We've done it!!

I'm going for another 13 days. 6 weeks is habit forming so I'm going until Valentine's Day.

Can we carry on with this thread please? I've found it invaluable.

Well done everyone.

Natsku · 31/01/2020 21:02

Hooray for us!

thisusernameismine · 31/01/2020 21:11

Yes please can we continue - using this thread or setting up a "Feb and beyond" one or something? I've no intention of stopping the sober days yet (not entirely sure if I'll make it through my 40th in March though, hopefully) x

Frequentdriver · 31/01/2020 21:34

My problem too - 14++ units in 3 days - and then feeling very virtuous for staying dry for 4 days a week. Cannot be right!

dementedma · 31/01/2020 21:45

Can’t believe I’ve done it. Thanks to all for support. Think I’m going to try and go for 6 weeks...

funnyoldonion · 31/01/2020 21:53

Well done everyone! I've just downloaded that book @ColouringPencils was 99p but still a bargain! So glad we have done DJ, I'm aiming for the 300 days too, will keep coming on here for support, it's been great! I am feeling a bit crabby this week but I think it's to do with my time of the month, it's been particularly bad I wonder if alcohol consumption effects it? I've been a right dragon, my poor family!

SellMySoulForMoreSleep · 31/01/2020 22:03

Yay! I'm well done everyone! I am at a party tomorrow where I will drink but back in it after for the 300 days. This made me smile earlier in the week...

SellMySoulForMoreSleep · 31/01/2020 22:06

Oh, it didn't post. Here it is:

Thirty days has September
April June and November
Unless a leap year is its fate
February has twenty eight
All the rest have three days more
Excepting January
Which has six thousand
One hundred and eighty four!

Winecheesesleep · 31/01/2020 22:47

Well done all, we made it! I genuinely 100% wouldn't have done this without stumbling on this thread and deciding on a whim to join in. So glad I did. Thanks all for the support.
