Which TV series did you used to enjoy but can't rewatch?

I was a huge Sex and the city fan when it was originally on and later got the DVD box set, but if I catch any of it now I don't enjoy it. I guess part of it was that as a teenager their life was so glamorous and exciting whereas now they all get on my nerves and none are particularly likeable.
Which shows are you disappointed by when you go back to them?

I rewatch The Wire about once a year.

Sure, the tech has dated, but everything else still works.

DGRossetti · 12/01/2020 17:17

The Wire. Why not? I rewatched it a year or two ago and it was still incredible.

Possibly because it's one of the most brutally truthful depictions of all that's wrong with "The War On Drugs ™" ? It even contained within it a perfect prophecy of how it would continue. Now that's good TV.

I agree it's incredible - truly epic story telling in every sense of the word.

Himym - shite ending did indeed ruin it - plus the mother really wasn’t all that, very ordinary in fact after such a huge build up

The mentalist - LOVED it first time around, adore Simon Baker and robin tunney watched it all again recently on prime as I’d not been able to watch it all properly in order first time around and it took perseverance! Just loses its way once the main storyline it starts off with is resolved (trying to avoid spoilers still)

Friends and charmed (original series not new tripe) have my love and loyalty forever despite their faults.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching ER again too though the later seasons are pretty “meh” and I see the flaws in all the characters now whereas first time around it was mainly Doug and Romano i saw as the flawed characters. Greene is selfish and inflexible, doesn’t excuse his wife’s affair but certainly makes it understandable, carol is SO needy, Benton has all the worst traits of surgeons plus a few new ones, Carter is an entitled little upstart, Abby somehow manages to be both needy and closed off emotionally, Kovac clearly has ptsd and/or complex grief disorder... you get the idea.

I’d love to be able to watch quantum leap again why it’s not available to stream anywhere aside from a few episodes I don’t know.

So many sitcoms...I'd love to see The Grimleys, Watching and The Smoking Room again

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/01/2020 18:20

The Grimleys! I loved that, wish it was still available.

Jitterbugger · 12/01/2020 18:58

Another one who used to absolutely adore SATC but can't watch it now. They are all so selfish, judgemental and self-indulgent. It seems very very dated.

I've been rewatching Friends for the first time in about 15 years and I've really really enjoyed it. However, there is so much in it that is questionable that I never noticed before. I used to think Ross was sweet but he's so controlling and manipulative. There is also a lot of talk of women being sluts/whores for how they dress, men openly discussing taking advantage of emotionally vulnerable women/drunk women. Constant jokes implying being gay is bad. It's shocked me how dated it seems.

Sunnysidegold · 12/01/2020 19:17

Friends and satc for me. Loved them both in my teens. And I really aspired to all things American at that age.

The women are so whiny in friends, Ross is just awful, the whole lesbian storyline and gay jokes make me feel uncomfortable. I used to properly lol when watching it.

Agree with others that the character sin say are just awful awful people.

Autumnchill · 12/01/2020 21:26

Someone asked why The Wire.

I loved it when it was on first time and couldn't wait for each episode then tried to watch it a couple of years ago and it just didn't have the same impact that it had the first time round. Stopped rewatching about 3 episodes in

MissCharleyP · 12/01/2020 21:43

Doubleraspberry Yes, I know. It’s just, it was funny when I was 13 or so, but as an adult who is around the age they were supposed to be I just find it cringey and ridiculous.

Same with The Royle Family; I hated it after the first series. I remember there was a line about the baby tipping an ashtray over himself and Denise waited till Dave came home to take a picture.

I dunno, just find it a bit ‘off’ I guess.

Doubleraspberry · 12/01/2020 21:52

But MissCharley in both cases that’s the point of the characters. Edina and Patsy are meant to behave in a cringeworthy way and Denise is a dreadful person in most ways. Maybe now you’re older you prefer characters you can relate to more? Tastes obviously change but also the way we perceive characters.

Crinkle77 · 12/01/2020 22:55

One Foot in the Grave and Allo Allo aren't as funny as I remember. Except for the episode with the candle with handle. That is still very funny.

mindutopia · 12/01/2020 23:00

Anthony Bourdain No Reservations.

He killed himself. It was truly one of my most favourite shows. I can’t even think about watching it now.

I probably couldn’t watch SATC conwoman either. I lived in NYC then and it was like my life story. Just couldn’t now. 🥺

mindutopia · 12/01/2020 23:01
  • conwoman! No idea what that means!

Still couldn’t watch SATC though!

Skyecat · 12/01/2020 23:27

Dawson's Creek makes me cringe now. Jen was cool though.

What was wrong with my so called life? I think it was the best teen show of its time with groundbreaking exploration of teen issues. In fact, I rewatched it about five years ago and still love it.

calllaaalllaaammma · 12/01/2020 23:31

How I met your mother - Mainly the sexism in it and the main character in it Ted? is so dull.

Neighbours - so many hours wasted on that - as students, we all used to get together and watch it, I don't know why it was such a hit.

Insaneinthemembury · 12/01/2020 23:51

SATC I adored as a teenager, rewatching it she does over analyse. Every. Single. Detail. It gets exhausting! Men are also deemed not good enough for the most shallow reasons.

HIMYM- I dont know how I didnt notice how dull and monotonous Ted is! Is this woman the one? How will I know? When will it happen? Is this a sign? Chill out man!

I still love Friends, but I'm a huge geek fan and always will be. I met Matthew Perry once. drifts off
