Dry January 2020. A new relationship with alcohol. Who’s joining me?

It’s that time again!
I did my first dry January around 5 years ago, having seen it on here. It was a great thing to do: really helped my get control of my drinking. Since then I’ve done it every year, along with at least one or two other dry months.

DJ may help you:
Lose weight. ...
Get better skin. ...
Make healthier food choices. ...
Save money. ...
Sleep better. ...
Have more energy. ...
Improve your mood. ...
Improve your general health

and make you feel virtuous!

It’s not necessarily easy though, so it’s good to have support; especially if you’re feeling week and like you may give up. We can support each other here.

I’m in. Like a lot of people have said, I’d like to use this as a reset button. I’m drinking every day & more than ever before. I’m actually looking forward to this month off & possibly longer who knows.

Cravingcake · 01/01/2020 09:52

Happy new year! Looking forward to this month.

I have restocked our wine fridge with sparkling water and fruit juice. Will also be getting some decaf tea to have in the evenings.

I have signed up to cancer research dryathon as well as a few of my friends don’t believe I can do this month off and I want to prove them wrong. Also, my DH has just spent the last 18 months battling bowel cancer (got the all clear a week before Christmas) so it’s a cause that I feel strongly about.

Newyearnewarse · 01/01/2020 09:57

I'm toying with this but in all honesty I think I would really struggle.
I drink most days (sometimes only one but still most days) . Booze is such a huge part of our social life .
But I have promised to run or walk a mile a day this year and lose weight and this would definitely help.

Count me in! It’s a good way to kickstart my resolution to get fit and lose a stone.

Wolfff · 01/01/2020 10:00

I’m in. Been drinking since Xmas and really need to detox. I normally drink wine 2-3 times a week at least and can’t afford the calories as well as the expense and health effects.

BloodyCats · 01/01/2020 10:02

I’m in! Always struggled with the amount I want to drink. I did really well at cutting right back but birthday and Christmas have sent that out the window.

I might hide all the alcohol away for January. We got loads of spirits as presents this year.

Skade · 01/01/2020 10:45

Well, I had my first sober New Year (and stayed in!) for the first time in about 20 years last night, and it was great. I bought a bottle of Nosecco from Asda which is surprisingly tasty, had a couple of glasses and then settled down under a blanket to watch Harry Potter. It was SO good to wake up hangover free this morning! Here's to all of us completing a successful dry January - happy new year all Grin

lilgreen · 01/01/2020 10:49

Well done to you all! I’ve done DJ twice and it has reset my alcohol relationship.Im not doing it this year but last night I was driving and I didn’t care. A few years ago it would have really bothered me. Good luck.

MabelChiltern1 · 01/01/2020 10:51

This would be a massive achievement for me. I’m going to try. Thank you for this thread.... will need support.... like quizzes!

Breathmiller · 01/01/2020 11:04

How are all the lovely hangover free mornings going?
I'm having a lazy morning but planning a walk later after some yoga and meditation.

Then got a nice meal planned with the family.

Doingitforhim · 01/01/2020 11:04

I lost my beloved DH yesterday. Everything is going to be different, so I’m going to do it sober. I have drunk every day of my married life. I’m not going to drink as a widow.

Not looking for sympathy, just support and accountability. Thank you.

lilgreen · 01/01/2020 11:18

Flowers oh I’m so sorry @doingitforhim.

Awks · 01/01/2020 11:23

So sorry @Doingitforhim

Breathmiller · 01/01/2020 11:31

@doingitforhim
I am so sorry. You must be in shock. What more important reason for us all to support you in any way we can.

SunshineAvenue · 01/01/2020 11:33

lilyrayne · 01/01/2020 11:50

I have bad anxiety and OCD and drinking blocks it out but makes it TEN times worse next day ! I'm goin to try my damned hardest n do it ! Starting today !! Good luck to everyone xxxx

Bombaybunty · 01/01/2020 11:57

I'm in, but starting tomorrow.

I don't drink huge amounts but could do with cutting back.

ParanoidGynodroid · 01/01/2020 12:08

A very Happy New Year and the driest of Januarys (Januaries?) to you all! Welcome aboard to all newcomers.

And good luck everyone. I hope as many of us as are able can check in, however briefly, in the evenings to help, support and encourage. There may be trouble and temptation ahead, but we’ll manage.

I’m so sorry for your loss @doingitforhim Flowers I hope this thread can be of some support to you.

A late night last night but I stopped drinking by 12 and had a cup of tea to see in the new year! My first challenge today is to cook and eat a roast dinner without a glass of red in hand...

Happy new year to you all

Winecheesesleep · 01/01/2020 12:49

Count me in! I haven't done it before but need a reset. I've also downloaded the Annie Grace book which seems good so far.

Notonthestairs · 01/01/2020 12:51

I'm in. I've tried before but only managed 10 days before caving in. Blush I really need to address my health this year - I've been putting it off and focusing on everyone else then leaning on alcohol when I get stressed. The last couple of weeks have been abysmal. Time to reset. This thread will make me more accountable- I work better in a team!

I'm so sorry Doingitforhim. I hope we can offer some support.

Doingitforhim · 01/01/2020 14:54

Thank you all. I don’t know whether I’m coming or going just now, but we had both talked about giving up, so, given that all my daily routines and triggers have been massively disrupted, it seems as good a time as any. Good luck to everyone.

Ellegeebee · 01/01/2020 15:01

I’m in!

BrunoLovesMe · 01/01/2020 16:06

@doingitforhim I’m sorry for your loss Flowers
