Dry January 2020. A new relationship with alcohol. Who’s joining me?

It’s that time again!
I did my first dry January around 5 years ago, having seen it on here. It was a great thing to do: really helped my get control of my drinking. Since then I’ve done it every year, along with at least one or two other dry months.

DJ may help you:
Lose weight. ...
Get better skin. ...
Make healthier food choices. ...
Save money. ...
Sleep better. ...
Have more energy. ...
Improve your mood. ...
Improve your general health

and make you feel virtuous!

It’s not necessarily easy though, so it’s good to have support; especially if you’re feeling week and like you may give up. We can support each other here.

Hope you’re all doing well this evening, and welcome newcomers.
Only 2 hours and 45 minutes left of day one!

I’m enjoying a Becks Blue and will be fine tonight... as the days wear on I’ll be finding it a bit more challenging.

Stay strong everyone 👍🏼

Sherry trifle in the fridge here! Is that a no no?

pointythings · 01/01/2020 21:32

I'm in too. This will be my fourth dry January, I do June as well. I started yesterday because I had to play Teenager Taxi, but I'm well used to not drinking these days. For me it's about the great sleep I get when I'm not drinking but also about maintaining a sensible relationship with alcohol. When I drink, I do it very moderately and only on weekends, but having watched my late husband destroyed by alcohol and last May my mother too, I'm determined never to let it slip into anything else.

Day 1 done here too Smile

Vik1ng · 01/01/2020 22:00

1 down. 30 to go 😬

dryishjan · 01/01/2020 22:02

I've name changed. I'd love to join you all but I've a two week holiday booked and I don't think I'd make it. My DH is currently not talking to me after nye party. My daughter said I was merry and enjoying myself so she doesn't know why he's so grumpy. He just hates me drinking I think. But I need to do it for me, don't I? I know I need to cut down as I have a pretty negative relationship with alcohol.

Angelik · 01/01/2020 22:08

Doing it to support my quitting smoking. Am tending to have a glass every night whilst having a smoke. Have also started slipping back into buying a can of g&t on train home. Am all round disgusted with self.

Dh joining. Have downloaded dry Jan app and cancelled £15 per month wine subs.

Day 1 done but not really achievement as hungover and full of snot. But so full of shame that i can't recall chunks of last night and have abandoned dc today.

Madcats · 01/01/2020 22:15

I am usually in the penguin huddle... is that a 30 or 90 day chat thing?... I will try to find the 'berg but MN is a really lovely place to be for "dry whatevers".

I bought plenty of 0% lager but, apart from Sparkly Bees Knees, I have yet to find a decent wine.

CakeAndGin · 01/01/2020 22:33

Neighbour came round round with a bottle of wine, I said we were doing dry January. Tried to argue that as it’s New Year’s Day it’s still the Christmas period and DJ starts tomorrow Hmm ignored their argument.

Feel a bit anxious about going back to work tomorrow because I’m unhappy in my job, I’ve been having a wine to distract myself. So a slight temptation with dinner and vimto didn’t quite cut it. So day 1 done. DH also breaking his routine and not having a beer now. So promising start.

SylviaC · 01/01/2020 22:58

Have done badly on day 1. Had lovely NYE party, didn't drink a thing, but then had huge row with sister about something ridiculous and ended up polishing off the left over open bottle of fizz.

Gah! DJ starts tomorrow.

Nomorewineever · 01/01/2020 23:08

@Madcats I’m a penguin too. Name changed a bit. If there is an iceberg floating about and you find it, could you kindly PM and direct me to it?

VinoEsmeralda · 02/01/2020 07:07

First day done, slept really well which i hope will continue.

ThatScottishLass · 02/01/2020 07:12

If I’m not too late to join the party I’m in too! I didn’t drink yesterday but feel like a group for accountability will help me stick with it, especially since DH isn’t going to go dry with me. I have definitely drunk too much this year, and have been using alcohol as a bit of an emotional crutch since a bout of terrible luck a couple of years ago. It’s time for a reset, I’ve become less productive and put on about a stone ne of it, enough is enough!

DrDreReturns · 02/01/2020 07:37

I'm doing it!

anonengland · 02/01/2020 07:50

This chat is really helpful day one done yesterday but already worried about tonight and a party I have to go to at the weekend. Slept terribly but I'm hopping that will improve in a day or two. Anyone got any tips for not stopping at the shop on the way home from work just get a cheeky bottle of wine. It's my day off tomorrow so I. Normally would. Will be disappointed with myself if I do but sometimes a bit of support helps my motivation.

Also has anyone got any useful forum or online support group suggestions tia

Nothingclever · 02/01/2020 07:56

I would also like to join please ? Had a Baileys last night so starting today.

Have been drinking every night now for ages. I can’t persuade my husband to join in with DJ, so would appreciate support here.

Good Luck to everyone

panicovernow · 02/01/2020 08:29

I'm in. I need to reset my drinking habits and this is the kickstart I need. I'm a weekend drinker, usually get a bottle of wine on way home from work on a Friday. Usually see friends on a Saturday and drink with them then feel crap all day Sunday and eat bad food. I also smoke socially which is something I never want to do again, generally I'm hoping DJ will help me get healthier and fitter. I want to see improved skin and get better sleep.

I managed day 1 yesterday which was not difficult as I was hungover and exhausted. My first challenge will be tomorrow evening. I have downloaded the DJ app and joined the FB group, alongside this thread the support and tips will get me through.

Cheguevarahamster · 02/01/2020 08:40

I'm in. This will be my 3rd dry January. Looking forward to it. Drank a fair bit over Christmas. Good luck to all the penguins.

imamearcat · 02/01/2020 08:51

Me and my DH are doing dry January. I don't have the best relationship with Alcohol.

I'm kinda looking forward to it although I know I'll be craving a drink by the weekend!

Good luck everyone!

Rottnest · 02/01/2020 09:09

I would like to join you, Xmas & NY are done so now I will concentrate on wellness, and am also doing WW digital, so am hoping for a good result.

Have just found a bottle of wine in the fridge that I had forgotten about, it can stay there, at least for the next 30days. Day 1 is already completed.
Good luck everyone

ParanoidGynodroid · 02/01/2020 09:09

Well done if you managed yesterday. If you didn’t, don’t give up or beat yourself up; just try again today.

anon can you go home a different way? Promise yourself a reward? Distract yourself with music or someone’s company?
I also usually get in quick and announce to everyone that I’ll be designated driver for any party or event that I’m going out to!

Day one done. Feeling quite chirpy today but just waiting on my work computer to log on to see the tide of email misery coming my way! And my in laws arrive tomorrow evening! Lots of baths and books will be my tools

RaisinsRuinEverything · 02/01/2020 09:26

2nd dry Jan here, but sober since Christmas Day. Need to stick to it this time and hopefully beyond January!

BloodyCats · 02/01/2020 09:38

Went to bed early last night so no temptation to drink.
I’ve drank a lot over the past couple of weeks so I think I’ll go a week or so not fancying any, and then the wine witch will come calling!
