Dry January 2020. A new relationship with alcohol. Who’s joining me?

It’s that time again!
I did my first dry January around 5 years ago, having seen it on here. It was a great thing to do: really helped my get control of my drinking. Since then I’ve done it every year, along with at least one or two other dry months.

DJ may help you:
Lose weight. ...
Get better skin. ...
Make healthier food choices. ...
Save money. ...
Sleep better. ...
Have more energy. ...
Improve your mood. ...
Improve your general health

and make you feel virtuous!

It’s not necessarily easy though, so it’s good to have support; especially if you’re feeling week and like you may give up. We can support each other here.

Join me! Brew

Anyone else having difficulty with the dry Jan ap registration page?

blissa · 31/12/2019 09:06

Sorry to hear you’re having a rough time Inpatientwino. I’m in a similar situation with my Dad and whilst I don’t think I’m using alcohol as a crutch atm, I can definitely see myself doing so in the future which is one of the reasons doing DJ appeals. Hopefully having the support of others will make it easier Flowers

BrunoLovesMe · 31/12/2019 09:45

@supercee yes I’m having trouble with the app. I can’t get past the registration page (name, age)

I'm making 2020 completely dry.
My DH on the other hand would struggle with a few dry days, sigh.....

Els1e · 31/12/2019 10:18

That’s great my2020newdecade. I’m reading one year no beer. Motivational but not convinced I would achieve it. But dry jan would be a start

SueDoeName · 31/12/2019 12:08

I'll join you from 2nd jan . I drink way too much and I need a kick start.

ParanoidGynodroid · 31/12/2019 13:00

Bumping for anyone who'd still like to join us Wink

Have a great NYE/Hogmanay everyone, whatever you're doing and whatever you're drinking. Hopefully we can reassemble tomorrow for support and strategies.

We can do this!

I've had alcohol free red wine last dry january which was ok but a bit vinegary. Alcohol free beer is foul though. I haven't tried seedlip yet, I don't know how they can justify the price of though tbh, it costs more than actual gin!

wintertime6 · 31/12/2019 20:07

I'm in! I really need to show myself I can do this, I've never had a great relationship with alcohol but it's got a lot worse this year. It's the 5pm trigger for me that I find it hard to get past, when I'm usually making the kids their dinner.

It's affecting my mental health, my energy levels, my motivation, my skin, I've no idea why I enjoy it when I really think about it.

This would be such an achievement for me if I could get to the end of January, fingers firmly crossed!

serialnc · 31/12/2019 20:35

I'll join!!

ParanoidGynodroid · 31/12/2019 20:36

Alcohol free beer is foul though

Have you tried Becks Blue, GreyGardens? I hate most AF beer too, but that one is really quite beery.

Welcome aboard, winter, I'm sure you can do it!

Sorry posted too soon. I have a lot going on atm and have been using alcohol as an excuse which I really need to stop doing. Would love the help and support and to give the same.

serialnc · 31/12/2019 20:38

@GreyGardens88 becks blue tastes almost exactly the same as becks. Used to drink it when I was pregnant

TimeToGetMeBack · 31/12/2019 20:40

I joined you two years ago (maybe three?) under a different name but would love to jump in again. I'm looking to go as long as possible not just January but taking it one day at a time. I started this gym this year and lost just over 2 stone with that alone, now I need to look at my diet and alcohol ( will also be giving up smoking so going all out!)

Rosieposy4 · 31/12/2019 20:50

I’m in , have downloaded the app. When the kids were small I probably went ten years with maybe one glass of wine over that whole decade. Now I need to loose weight and stop using alcohol as a painkiller for my long term injuries.

CakeAndGin · 31/12/2019 21:08

I’m in. I suggested it to DH the other day and he’s in too. He has loads of beer in but it’ll keep until February. We’ve had a few months of big spending so one aim is to try to save a few £s. Hopefully, we naturally lose a bit of weight too. For both of us, I think we also need to reset our habitats with alcohol. For him it’s become part of his evening routine. For me, I’ve been struggling at work and turning to alcohol. I’m hoping that stopping alcohol in the evenings will mean I sleep easier and makes it easier to get up in the morning so I can go to the gym (as that’s slipped the last two months), which will hopefully make me feel better and less likely to want to drink.

Not at any NYE parties tonight but finishing the Christmas booze and so starting tomorrow.

Breathmiller · 31/12/2019 22:02

Im in too. In fact I started a few days ago.
I have done it quite a few times. Once I kept going and didnt drink for a year and a half. And i felt soooo good. And achieved so much.
But I've slipped back into the habit this last year so its time for a reset again.

For those that find the thought hard, the thing that gets me through is 'just for today'.

When i first did it many years ago I only lasted a couple of weeks. But then I started trying again halfway through the year.
And then it all just got a bit easier until i had that year and a half off.
Happy new year to us all when we will all feel brighter and healthier

MirriMazDuur · 31/12/2019 22:07

I'm in. I don't drink loads but when I do my already shitty mental health takes a massive dive for days afterwards.

Blaziken · 01/01/2020 09:04

Impatientwino I have a poorly mum too. Flowers

Blaziken · 01/01/2020 09:07

Happy new year everyone! I'm starting today and I feel good about it. Benefits I'm hoping to see:

Better sleep
Better concentration at work
Improved mental health (hope to get off ADs this year)
Lose weight

I have been terrible all through december, a bottle of wine most nights. This can't continue.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/01/2020 09:12

I'm in.

Did it a couple of years ago and really kick started a big weight loss and overall healthier life style but the wine consumption has crept up and up and I am looking forward to re-setting my normal.

It did help last time to huddle...

itsme7 · 01/01/2020 09:16

I'd love to join please! Did 100 days AF a few years ago and lost weight and my MH was so much better for it. Planning to do to the end of February this time.

Patchworksack · 01/01/2020 09:21

I'm in. I have drunk too much over Christmas. Alcohol often makes me wake up at 3am then fuzzy headed in the morning, plus I eat too much crap alongside my glass of wine. I've done it before, need a bit of a mindset change to stop me going straight back to Friday = open a bottle afterwards.

espressotini · 01/01/2020 09:23

Can I join please?! Want to lose some weight and sure this will help! Having a g&t or 2 most days now and need to break the habit.

Can anyone suggest good replacement drinks? I've tried the alcohol free gin which just felt like ridiculously expensive squash. What else could I try?

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 01/01/2020 09:29

I’m in. I happily knock back a bottle of wine a minute an evening a couple of nights a week. It’s too much for me. Makes me feel foggy the next day. I could also really do with saving the calories.
I’ve downloaded the dry jan app, the yellow one. I’ll be saving the money I don’t spend on drinking, which is handy as I’m doing the 1p savings challenge but in reverse so need the cash this month.
