Yes, announced back in the summer

DragonMamma · 28/12/2019 11:41

You must have missed the stream of Daily Mail sad faces when it was announced- people had booked their wedding for the normal Monday bank holiday or the Sunday and were up in arms about the change.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/12/2019 11:42

Me, because I don't work Fridays so I'm missing out on an extra day off next year Grin

Had no clue! Thanks for the heads up!

TSSDNCOP · 28/12/2019 11:44

Yep, since last summer. I said at the time, this’ll cause a fuck up as there is bags of opportunity for people to “accidentally” book it.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 28/12/2019 11:45

I did but only heard it very recently. (Or rather it only registered in my brain when I heard it then. I imagine I did hear it before but didn't really pay attention)

MrsFrostyTheSnowman · 28/12/2019 11:45

Yep was talked about loads last summer

BiteyShark · 28/12/2019 11:46

Yes saw it on the news a while back when it was announced.

Think they should have added another one rather than moved it as I can see that it might have caused problems if people had made plans based on bank holidays.

TheWinterCaillech · 28/12/2019 11:49

Yes, there were lots of complaints and ‘What about prebooked holiday?’ comments on the national news. The general consensus was that the government should have added another bank holiday instead of moving one.

Muddlingalongalone · 28/12/2019 11:49

Yes - there was some crisis about calendars at work
School have also made a point of highlighting it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2019 11:52

I feel really sorry for people who have booked things in advance. They should have just given us an extra day and left the Monday as it was.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 11:54

Yes, it was all over the news last summer.

I thought it was a high-handed decision, FWIW - assuming everyone would want a whole day to commemorate VE day. I will certainly commemorate it, but I don't need a day's holiday to do so. Fortunately it doesn't really affect me but I feel sorry for people who might have planned weddings/holidays before it was announced.

Why not give everyone an extra day rather than messing about with the customary day?

OhMsBeliever · 28/12/2019 11:55

I did not know this. Now I know.

Must remember to send kids to school on Monday and then don't send them on Friday. Grin

corduroyal · 28/12/2019 12:14

Ugh, Tories! May Day is traditionally a day to celebrate worker's rights. Totally cynical to change it especially as there are very few WWII vets left.

wendz86 · 28/12/2019 12:15

Yes although the new diary I got for Christmas has it wrong .

OceanSunFish · 28/12/2019 12:18

Yes I knew.

amusedbush · 28/12/2019 12:19

Yes, and I’m chuffed because I’d booked the following two weeks off to celebrate mine and DH’s 30th birthdays. I now finish up on the Thursday Grin

Clawdy · 28/12/2019 12:19

I think most of next year's diaries and calendars have the date as Monday bank holiday. Very confusing. They should have kept the Monday one, but moved it to the Monday after the VE Friday, then everyone would have had a nice long weekend!

ivykaty44 · 28/12/2019 12:20

I had heard this and then on November checked all bank holiday dates ready to book annual leave & realised again the early May b/h had changed

RedskyAtnight · 28/12/2019 12:23

Yes, as well as the press announcements our workplaces and DC's school have formally announced the change and how it affects us (its a biggish deal in secondary schools as it was the last "normal" school day before GCSEs start).

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 12:24

amusedbush Doesn't that mean you're having to use an extra day's annual leave, though, because the first Monday of your fortnight won't be included?

That's what's messed up a lot of people's plans. They've booked 4 days on the assumption Monday would be a bank holiday and they now find they need to book an extra day to have their week's holiday.

GertiMJN · 28/12/2019 12:26

It has been handled appallingly badly. It's not as if the date was a surprise ffs!

It has cost many companies money already will cost many individuals money and inconvenience by removing the Monday holiday such dhort notice.

Ill thought out and unnecessarily damaging. Fuckwits

amusedbush · 28/12/2019 12:28

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah

I don’t mind, I never use my leave and always end up carrying the maximum (5 days) over to the next holiday year.

It also lines up with the other Monday holiday at the end of the month so I’ve got 18 days off or something Grin

I’ll be submitting my masters dissertation on 1st May so a long break is just what I’ll need!

Aragog · 28/12/2019 12:32

Yes I knew. It was announced quite a while back, and the phone and online calendars etc all note it as the new date.

I manage the website and social media calendars for my school and I've highlighted this change on all of those when we started back in September.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 12:32

Ah, that's lucky, amusedbush. Good luck with the dissertation!

A few people where I work have been royally inconvenienced because they'd already booked all their days when the change was announced, or they'd planned to go away for a long weekend with the Monday off - then there was a rush to book that Monday!
