I've known since it was announced back in the summer, no one where I work or Dh works tends to book holidays a whole year ahead though so it hasn't really affected us. In fact it's better for me as I don't work on Fridays but do on Mondays.

Kinsters · 28/12/2019 12:44

I knew about this and it doesn't affect me as I live overseas. I can see how people might have been inconvenienced though. I think the government should have just given an extra bank holiday if they felt it was that important...they managed it for Will and Kate's wedding!

"especially as there are very few WWII vets left"

I dare say that's the whole point of making a bigger deal of it at 75 - soon there will be none. Waiting until the 100 doesn't seem like a good idea

I’m annoyed by it as my birthday is the 1st so I was going to take it as annual leave and have a long weekend...,,no!

AuntieStella · 28/12/2019 12:50

I learned about it from the MN threads when it was announced.

I'm quite happy with the change, and see the commemoration as important.

But think there should have been years notice, not just one.

lazyarse123 · 28/12/2019 12:52

People won't have to use more annual leave for that week off. They'll still only use 4 days. Doesn't bother me i'll be working all week anyway.

megletthesecond · 28/12/2019 12:52

I knew.
I had to change the date on my calendar.

CherryOnBlue · 28/12/2019 12:53

That's what's messed up a lot of people's plans. They've booked 4 days on the assumption Monday would be a bank holiday and they now find they need to book an extra day to have their week's holiday.

If they’ve booked up that entire week they’ll be fine. It’s still 4 days plus a bank holiday - just the date of the bank holiday is different.

It’s obviously a pain for those who’ve booked a long weekend away ending on the 4th though.

They had it on the 8th before once. I think in that case it was still a Monday, but the second Monday in May rather than the 1st.

A good point, but the remaining veterans won't still be working so don't need a bank holiday to be able to commemorate the day. However, I am not against a bank holiday for commemorations - just not at the expense of moving an existing day. Give an extra day instead!

What annoys me is that there seems to have been no general consultation about this. The public should have been asked to give opinions - e.g. local MPs could have sought views from constituents, or the main newspapers/news websites could have held a poll.

Blatherskite · 28/12/2019 12:53

It was everywhere last Summmer. Lots of stories of calendar companies having to ditch already printed calendars and people's weddings/holidays being affected.

It'll affect me as I work at an event which traditionally runs on the Bank Holiday Monday and is now having to take place on a Sunday.

Equanimitas · 28/12/2019 12:54

I dare say that's the whole point of making a bigger deal of it at 75 - soon there will be none.

Seems unlikely. The very few who are left aren't really in a position to take part much. It's fairly blatantly a political move.

GertiMJN · 28/12/2019 12:55

Agreed lazyarse123 if it's the whole week but lots of people will have booked weddings, functions, long weekends etc. that it will affect.

Choppersicballs · 28/12/2019 12:55

Yep

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 12:56

Not everyone's week is Monday to Friday.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/12/2019 12:58

My new 2020 wall calendar is wrong!

RancidOldHag · 28/12/2019 13:03

"especially as there are very few WWII vets left"

Over 580,000 people aged over 90 in UK (government stats on longevity from 2018)

They won't 'need' the Bank Holiday as nearly all will have retired. But perhaps we need them as the living link history, that reminds us that war isn't somehow distant and 'other' but something very real and well within living memory

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2019 13:10

I only found out a few weeks ago. Should definitely have been an extra holiday. And, with much more notice, Monday 4th could have moved to the 11th, maybe?

GertiMJN · 28/12/2019 13:14

especially as there are very few WWII vets left apart from spectacularly missing the point of commemorating such historical events, you have also missed the point that people born from 1939 onwatds will remember the war and those born in the 10 years up to 1949 will also remember the legacy in many ways from bombsites to rationing. Thats a very large number of people with direct experience.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 28/12/2019 13:16

The 11th would be problematic as GCSE exams start then.

Angelw · 28/12/2019 13:17

😊 Thanks, has no clue

ForalltheSaints · 28/12/2019 13:22

Yes knew about it a few months ago, but feel it was penny pinching not to have it as an extra bank holiday.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 28/12/2019 13:24

Ah no I didn't know that! I don't work Fridays anyway so miss out on a day off.

RingtheBells · 28/12/2019 13:24

Yes, but only because there was a large thread on here about someone booking a wedding for what would have been the original Mayday weekend

RingtheBells · 28/12/2019 13:29

Actually its better for me as I work Mon and Tues so one more holiday I can choose when to take rather than having to use a day holiday for BH

BikeRunSki · 28/12/2019 13:31

I knew, really annoyed, it’s costing me a day’s leave, the way my employer deals with BH for part timers.

It’s the other way round.
