Ignite that last sentence, don’t know where it cane from ^^

people born from 1939 onwatds will remember the war and those born in the 10 years up to 1949 will also remember the legacy in many ways from bombsites to rationing. Thats a very large number of people with direct experience.

My parents were born during WW2 - they retired more than 20 years ago so have no need of bank holidays, and they have no desire for bank holidays to be moved for a mass commemoration of VE day despite having parents who served in WW2. They remember what it was like to work full time and to have to plan around bank holidays. Like me, they will give thanks quietly on the day in question.

What annoys me is that there seems to have been no general consultation about this. The public should have been asked to give opinions - e.g. local MPs could have sought views from constituents, or the main newspapers/news websites could have held a poll.

Yep, because that always works well. Grin we could have a vote, then another and another...

This is the first I've heard of it. I read the news and mumsnet every day Shock

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 13:42

Ha ha! I don't think it warranted a referendum but some attempt to gauge informally that this was what the majority of working people actually wanted would have been good. It was simply announced - it was high-handed. "Yes, you little worker-bees, we know what's good for you and you will celebrate VE day and bloody well enjoy it too."

TSSDNCOP · 28/12/2019 13:46

Yeah true. Bastarding high handed elected officials. I totally blame the Tories for not organising VE in 1945 to coincide with May Day in 2020.

Which they can still do.

But a bank holuday is a way of publically commemorating the event and linking those that didn't experience it with those who did.

I'd far rather a bank holiday to remember the celebrstion of the end of a war (not the whole of ww2 obviously) , than the wedding of a royal couple.

But it still should have been planned 5 years ago!

Ah, so that's why there was a Labour landslide a couple of months later. It all makes sense now! Clement Attlee must have been rubbing his hands with glee all along.

I agree with you there.

TSSDNCOP · 28/12/2019 14:04

Despite having made it public where I work from the minute it was announced, I am waiting for the shocked/indignant/outraged —fibbers— telling me they’ll have to have both days as public holiday as they just didn’t know.

isittheholidaysyet · 28/12/2019 14:11

To be honest I only know because I was chatting to a friend whose business prints calendars
Otherwise I wouldn't have a clue.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/12/2019 14:12

I wonder when they decided? It was mums birthday and she was living in London then. She said that she assumed everyone was celebrating her birthday!

ExpletiveFairylighted · 28/12/2019 14:15

There was a government press release on 7th June this year, so about 11 months ahead.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/12/2019 14:18

That must have missed my in-tray! Also the in-tray of the publishers of my 2020 diary too!

TSSDNCOP · 28/12/2019 14:50

I suppose it only 6 months for the diary makers isnt a huge lead time.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 14:58

My Paperblanks diary shows it as the Monday, but I always write 'BH' at the top of the page in big letters anyway!

Lordfrontpaw · 28/12/2019 15:13

BH?

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 15:18

Bank Holiday.

NichyNoo · 28/12/2019 15:30

Yes, it's messed up our annual weekend away that we that do every early May bank holiday. Haven't booked for 2020 as it would now mean the boys missing the Monday of school Sad. Why on earth couldn't they have just given an extra day and kept the bank holiday Monday?!

Mammyloveswine · 28/12/2019 15:46

It was announced ages ago! It means I now get a long weekend for my birthday so I'm chuffed Grin

Bumply · 28/12/2019 15:58

I was reminded of it in Waterstones where there was a big notice apologising for the diaries and calendars that were printed before the decision was made.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 28/12/2019 16:12

As a pp said, I bet some people will use it as a reason not to turn up for work on the Monday! "But my calendar says ..." Grin

1066vegan · 28/12/2019 16:20

Lots on the local news when it was announced. A lot of people are unhappy because it messes up traditional May Day events.

YorkieTheRabbit · 28/12/2019 16:27

It’s business that pays fo

YorkieTheRabbit · 28/12/2019 16:28

Oops, pays for bank holidays, not the government.
