Secret Santa.... did you do well this year or end up with tat?

Lighthearted thread alert!!

Secret Santa is always a bit of fun but it’s also a gamble as to if you’ll get £10 worth of goodies or £10 worth of regifted tat.

This year I bought:

  • I made a hamper full of Harry Potter goodies, actually spent about £20 but I didn’t mind as the girl it was for has been a great help all year at work.

This year I got:

  • a big glass that says “is it too early for prosecco” (when it is well known in the office that I hate prosecco/wine and I only actually drink gin)
  • a candle

What did you get?

I got a generic bath set which is just a bit meh.

SimonJT · 20/12/2019 19:05

We had ours yesterday

I got socks, this is because I wear ‘invisible’ socks which my colleagues moan about.

I bought my secret santa a phone charger as hers always runs out at work and she steals mine!

Bottle of gin! Score!

We did £1.00 lucky dip, had to be something to wear there and then at our office lunch. I got a pack of false eyelashes! Other gifts, in addition to the usual Xmas accessories, included a shower cap, exfoliating gloves and skateboarding elbow pads Xmas Smile

CactusAndCacti · 20/12/2019 19:10

Ours was good, £10 spend.

I got chocolate and some notepads/pens - all good. Everyone got a really well thought out present, it was lovely.

A bottle of fizz. Not sure what. I’ll open it now.

Cava :) I’m pleased with that, I was planning to buy a bottle for myself for Christmas Day!

coragreta · 20/12/2019 19:11

Got an amazing picture for the wall perfect for me.
I made a giant selection box for the girl who is always eating/scrounging food from the kitchen. They seemed chuffed. What more can you expect for a fiver.
Some people got crap though. Bath sets are the worst.

BarcelonaFreddie · 20/12/2019 19:12

Made up with mine. Very thoughtful, totally appropriate for me.
Everybody, in a team of 20, looked like they had got a gift that was at least the tenner and the gifter had thought about it.
Winning!

I got wine, chocolates and flashing Christmas earrings and necklace 😁 sounds mostly generic but I was delighted. Wine was my favourite and I am known to love a shiny Christmas accessory. I’ve only been in my new job 2 months so was really pleased.

HellonHeels · 20/12/2019 19:16

Baylis and Harding set...

JigsawsAreInPieces · 20/12/2019 19:16

A hand-crocheted scarf. It's lovely and heavy, thick deep purple wool and a perfect length. I love it. Xmas Grin

PhysaliaPhysalis · 20/12/2019 19:17

A piece of clothing that was way too small.

Mind you, I had a tricky person this year so they got a generic smellies set.

Bunnylady53 · 20/12/2019 19:19

I put my contribution in the box at work today but not sure when we’re doing it. I bought a Boots photo snow globe

MrsIronfoundersson · 20/12/2019 19:20

Bottle of nice wine, am pleased!

BringMeTea · 20/12/2019 19:21

Clothing? Who buys a colleague clothing? Please tell us about the too small clothing item Physalia.

AKAanothername · 20/12/2019 19:22

I did well, budget £10, I got a bottle of rose champagne (proper stuff). I think maybe one of the business partners pulled my name this year.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 20/12/2019 19:23

What are invisible socks ? Trainer socks ?

PaperbackBlighter · 20/12/2019 19:24

I got a lovely bottle of wine, and two wine glasses.

Very happy with that.

A look around the room suggested that everyone was pleased- nice gifts and a team that know each other well enough to pick things that would be appreciated.

I got a pewter cat key ring and cat fob watch - totally spoilt. £15 spend but this person always spends over! Previous years I've had joke presents, generic bath sets

Sandsnake · 20/12/2019 19:30

We did something called ‘Bad Santa’. Rules are that everyone buys a gift, maximum £5. Gifts all go into a Santa sack. Then all participants’ names go into a hat and are drawn one by one. When it’s your turn you can either choose to take a wrapped gift from the sack or to ‘steal’ one that someone else has already got, if there’s something you like the look of. If you get your gift stolen then you choose another one from the sack. It’s obviously best to be drawn last, as you get the choice of all the gifts without the risk of yours being stolen!

Found that this way made it really fun and also took all the angst out of choosing which gift to get, as you’re not buying for anyone specific. Also means nobody feels singled out if their present is rubbish, as it’s nothing personal. Would highly recommend!

I bought a cookbook and chocolates and I got a lovely cookbook in return, only been there 6 months but they know i have a love of cooking.

DecemberSnow · 20/12/2019 19:32

A couple of years ago, afew people "forgot" to bring in their gift and i felt sorry for the people they suppose to of been buying for.
Its really shit
