Secret Santa.... did you do well this year or end up with tat?

Lighthearted thread alert!!

Secret Santa is always a bit of fun but it’s also a gamble as to if you’ll get £10 worth of goodies or £10 worth of regifted tat.

This year I bought:

  • I made a hamper full of Harry Potter goodies, actually spent about £20 but I didn’t mind as the girl it was for has been a great help all year at work.

This year I got:

  • a big glass that says “is it too early for prosecco” (when it is well known in the office that I hate prosecco/wine and I only actually drink gin)
  • a candle

What did you get?

I think companies should have a policy, the worst thing u can buy in pound land / charity shop... £5 max

Tonii1985 · 20/12/2019 19:36

I got a nice mug. I'll use it at work. I have literally never been happy with a work secret santa gift so this year was probably was the best one yet.

Allyg1185 · 20/12/2019 19:38

I gave a cotton scarf, chocolate and pack of blue wkds. All of which my person loved and enjoys. I got a bottle of gin and a candle. Love candles and gin. Unfortunatly it's not a nice flavour of gin

I got a miniature of my fav gin and a mixer. Very thoughtful as they'd had to so some investigating and it's hard to source. I think it was my bestie though...

bowchicawowwow · 20/12/2019 19:42

I was pretty disappointed with mine. I got some sticky tab page markers with cats on :(

safariboot · 20/12/2019 19:43

My colleagues couldn't be arsed to include me.

Loyaultemelie · 20/12/2019 19:44

I got a bath gift set in my favourite scent, a vegan hot choc and a perfume sample size. My first ever time participating so very pleased

VaguelySensible · 20/12/2019 19:46

I've been in two this year. First was awesome - the giver had clearly done their research and I'm still enjoying the massive amount of chocolate they got me Grin Second was a completely anonymous, pot-luck draw - nice enough tat, that's going to be regifted to the charity shop ASAP.

Nonnymum · 20/12/2019 19:46

Am I the only person who loves Bath sets? People on here seem to hate them but I am always happy to receive them because I won't buy them for myself but I love a soak in the bath.

Jayneisapain · 20/12/2019 19:46

Mine (not work, with DHs friends) is tomorrow. I got the person in the group that I know the least. Budget £20 so I bought him one of those smart plugs you can control your lights etc from your phone. I hope he likes it!

We did 'Santa steal or swap ' this year so all the gifts were generic (you select one wrapped, or steal someone elses. Once unwrapped its yours to keep unless someone steals it)... i took a plush notepad embossed with 'Executive Micromanager'. I got the swaggiest naked man apron complete with 'appendage'. Needless to say, noone else wanted it. It looked like it hadbeen regifted several times already. Straight in the bin.

Last year someone decided gifts should be from a charity shop... also a shit idea. My gift was a craft kit i put together for a Willy Warmer. Mine was a cheap necklace and a second hand kids book stained with dribble. Both went in the bin.

I always make an effort and yet always receive rubbish!!

AppleKatie · 20/12/2019 19:49

I’m still waiting for mine- it was handed out 10 days ago Hmm

TheDoctorDances · 20/12/2019 19:50

I got tat. I managed to get mine lovely gifts within budget (£10) and I was given a £3 bottle of wine in return. It's all mandatory in our office including birthdays. Costs me a fortune on shit I don't need and people I can't stand. Woe betide if you try to get out of it. Someone tried once and became a pariah.

KipperTheFrog · 20/12/2019 19:52

I got a tin of biscuits for cheese. I hardly ever eat cheese. I like it, but dont eat often.
I'd have loved a generic bath set or similar. Everyone else got really personal, thought out gifts.

Wasail · 20/12/2019 19:53

I got a candle. I like candles so I’m happy with that.

Some good ideas here for next years office secret Santa 🎅

LemonPrism · 20/12/2019 19:57

Ours is tomorrow. Last year I got a fantastic fiction book which I very much enjoyed. My favourite SS ever! I have got my SS a jumper themed around her interests and some beauty bits

OrangeTwirlGate · 20/12/2019 19:58

@TheDoctorDances

My work is like that.
Team of 25 and we have to pay £5 everytime someone turns a special age/ has a baby/ gets engaged/ gets married/ moves home/ gets promoted.

It’s unfair as the manager & director earn about 65k and 45k
And the trainees earn £3.90 an hour but everyone is expected to pay the same.

I loved mine, it was posh biscuits and a mug but the mug had a great message on it that was really perfect for me. I loved that they'd taken the time to think about what I like, I've always had nice but generic stuff before.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 20/12/2019 20:05

I was disappointed in mine. A box of reese’s peanut butter cups and a generic mug/hot chocolate/ fluffy sock set.

£15 budget.

doublebarrellednurse · 20/12/2019 21:54

We had a £15 limit and I did well' I've no idea what it is opening at Christmas!

carrie74 · 20/12/2019 22:03

I work for a creative company, and we were encouraged to make or buy (£10 limit). My SS made me a book with my photo on the cover and some really funny book quotes on the back, it was absolutely amazing, and is now in pride of place in my kitchen. There were some amazing, really creative gifts.

Blueemeraldagain · 20/12/2019 22:05

I got some lovely Toastie fluffy socks and 3 bottles of Nail Inc nail polish (red, red glittery and a pale pink).
The red/red glitter set is about £15 so with a £10 limit so I was very happy.

OrangeTwirlGate · 20/12/2019 22:06

Oh wow @doublebarrellednurse

That looks fancy!
