Cancelling Sky. What now?

OhWifey · 27/11/2019 12:42

I'm just on hold to Sky after another ridiculous bill. I'm ready to cancel unless they offer me something quite special. I will get pay as you go Sky Sports through our Now TV dongle. Should I buy a Smart TV? Any other good TV and Broadband packages? I'm a bit stuck in the noughties so I don't know what the best alternative is. Been used to having phone/broadband/TV all through Sky for the last 10 years

I pay £15/mth for the basic package.

Hold out and they will contact you with offers to stay

Flapjackninja · 27/11/2019 18:28

I've always found that to get the best deals with sky you actually have to leave. Ignore all offers on the phone and slowly offers will arrive by email or on your sky account. I managed to get 70% off that way. Now pay £27 for cinema, box sets and all the channels.

Redwinestillfine · 27/11/2019 18:37

I echo the above. It's only after you have cancelled that they phone you back with an actual offer.

Lovemenorca · 27/11/2019 18:54

@Pinkflipflop85

What? Ever?! Where can we access?!

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/11/2019 18:56

Goodness this is an eye opener. I've got Virgin, been with them for six years. Broadband, no movies, no sport, I watch ITV, Channel 4 and Fox for The Walking Dead. I have some kids channels for DS although he rarely uses them. I do not have a phoneline in this house but they insist I have to pay for a line and phonecalls I can never make. I'm paying £60 a month and I can't really afford it. I can do better than this can't I?

SpiderCharlotte · 27/11/2019 18:59

Never had Sky. We have Freeview, Now TV and Netflix. Fine for us.

stucknoue · 27/11/2019 19:01

When I called sky they cut my bill by half for the same services minus inclusive calls (use mobile now)

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/11/2019 19:02

@Lovemenorca it's all a bit unclear at the moment usually it is on a few weeks after the US but that hasn't happened this year and there's no confirmed start date for the UK!

Ylvamoon · 27/11/2019 19:03

We have Sky broadband, landline phone and basic package... 30.- month Apparently we are "platinum members" as we had it x years. But we had to negotiate the deal.

MockersFactCheckMN · 27/11/2019 19:04

I would say, Only get Sky if you want Sky stuff you can only get in Sky. In my case, The Daily Show, John Oliver, The Orville, Britannia, Discovery of Witches etc, plus Film4 in HD, Eurosport, Nat Geographic channels, and above all, Cricket.

MidnightMystery · 27/11/2019 19:13

I'm with Virgin and I think they are rubbish!

MrsCobbit · 27/11/2019 19:45

Just got my mobile with unlimited calls and texts with 6 g of data plus fibre broadband and free installation for £26 per month. Already have a fire stick, Amazon Prime and Netflix

TatianaLarina · 27/11/2019 19:45

Yes. We’ve got Virgin Business broadband ie superfast + phone line (that we use) U.K. calls free and it’s only £50 a month.

MrsCobbit · 27/11/2019 19:46

Sorry - posted too soon - with ee

KatherineJaneway · 27/11/2019 19:56

I went ahead with cancelling with Sky after being with them for years because they didn't offer sweet fa. 6 months half price is all I was offered when I threatened to cancel, whereas I know other people that were offered and took 6 months free and even more. I'd been a good customer for a decade but they kept putting prices up year after year while offering great deals to new customers.

That was years ago and I don't miss it. No terrestrial TV now just an Apple box, Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer.

MrKlaw · 27/11/2019 20:02

I’d be pretty happy dropping my TiVo box - honestly most of the time I end up deleting entire seasons and watching from catch up.

But no point ditching it because broadband only is more expensive than broadband + tv from virgin. Stupid. So might as well keep it just for the occasional convenience of pausing live tv

WWE123 · 27/11/2019 20:04

Get IPTV added on firestick £80 year all sky channels BT sport box sets 3pm live Saturday games and live sport pay per views

theunknownknown · 27/11/2019 20:09

Similar game plans work with Virgin - call to cancel, go through with it despite any deals they offer you to stay - then within about 72 hours they’ll ring you and beg you to stay and you can practically name your price and package!

Don't bank on this - I'm a virgin customer paying over £70 a month. I called to cancel and was offered diddly squat. Was just told that as I was out of contract I simply had to give them a month's notice and then return the box. Absolutely no hint of a better deal whatsoever.

OctoberLovers · 27/11/2019 20:35

Netflix for us... All the way...

With a smart tv, You can catch up with BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5

Redwinestillfine · 27/11/2019 20:36

You have to actually cancel. The staff who you talk to when you call to cancel don't have access to the best deals. Only once you have actually walked away will they call back.

EsmeShelby · 27/11/2019 20:37

We have Netflix - £8.99 per month.

JemSynergy · 27/11/2019 20:37

NOW TV, BT sports, Netflix. Wouldn't go back with sky who I was with for about 10 years, they refused to offer me a deal to stay.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 27/11/2019 20:42

Can anyone recommend a good broadband provider?? We are currently with virgin and the wifi is shocking in our new house. However struggling to fond another provider.

TatianaLarina · 27/11/2019 20:43

@Dickory

Do you have fibre optic?

bluetongue · 27/11/2019 20:44

Anyone else really disappointed with their smart TV? Mine is a Samsung, a few years old now, but it just hasn’t delivered. Either apps disappear or the ones that are there have a clunky format. Apparently I might not be able to access Netflix after December 1 Angry Luckily I have another way of getting Netflix but it’s still a bit shit.
