Cancelling Sky. What now?

I'm just on hold to Sky after another ridiculous bill. I'm ready to cancel unless they offer me something quite special. I will get pay as you go Sky Sports through our Now TV dongle. Should I buy a Smart TV? Any other good TV and Broadband packages? I'm a bit stuck in the noughties so I don't know what the best alternative is. Been used to having phone/broadband/TV all through Sky for the last 10 years

Thanks for your help everyone. It turned out that if we wanted to keep Sky Sports, which we do; then Sky did have the best option. I can see that if we didn't want that there would be loads else to choose from. It was true that once I actually quit (which I did), the big guns came out. Even bigger than when I was just threatening.

Sounds like we need Virgin to up their game, I get tired of seeing adverts for something we can't get here, the lad in the shop actually laughed when I gave him our postcode to enquire about future plans!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 27/11/2019 16:12

We bought an LG smart TV as it has NowTV as an app on the TV so no NowTV box/dongle required.

We have NowTV and Netflix. Plus we pay for Amazon Prime so get Prime Video with that too. Virgin is very expensive here, never got a good deal when the promotion ran out so ditched them. We now have both Virgin and BT lines into the house, so can chop and change on a whim Grin

Lovemenorca · 27/11/2019 16:17

Almost brought me to tears trying to get through to them and still no joy

A classic example of a huge business that thins it doesn’t need to give a shit about customer experience

I reckon won’t be around in 10 years.

Compare with amazon for example - my experience always so positive. It is possible to be a huge conglomerate and still deliver good service

Lovemenorca · 27/11/2019 16:18

I have sky for greys anatomy!

cantfindname · 27/11/2019 16:26

I cancelled Sky ages ago, tell them not to keep phoning you asking you to go back! It is ridiculously expensive now and they don't even try to offer discounts to keep you.

Changed to FreeSat which has loads of channels and is... well... free.

blueheaven97 · 27/11/2019 16:32

We cancelled Sky a couple of years ago but regretted it and ended up going back to it after a month or so. Not really fussed about all the movies and sports etc but we just missed the general interface - it's better than any alternative we could find. Now we just have the basic, cheapest package and I think it's worth it.

justasking111 · 27/11/2019 16:32

I contacted them to cancel, broadband, phone and tv, with a bit of rejigging of things now pay around £70 per month. We do not have sports though. OH loves rugby but nowadays Sky/BT/Virgin all have bits of the sport so would have to buy all three to watch what he wants so he gave up. DS has Amazon prime and I have family netflix for five which seems to suit everyone.

EngTech · 27/11/2019 16:47

Cancelled Sky about 6 months ago as they wanted £35 a month for the package I had.

Price dropped to £22 while on phone to Sky, went ahead and cancelled

Now get e mails asking me to come back for £13 a month, with a £10 admin charge.

Nope, not interested and will stick to FreeSat, one of payment of £25, Catch Up TV and Netflix.

Logged what I actually watched on Sky and found it was a lot for what I was actually watching. Mainly terrestrial TV i.e. BBC and ITV etc.

Money saved allocated to other priorities and I don’t miss it

MumOfGlitterAndDirt · 27/11/2019 16:47

I have sky Q box for £20 per month. That's every channel apart from the sports. I thi k theres about £35 of offers on that.

Ravenesque · 27/11/2019 17:01

Another with Amazon and Netflix here. I love them. If you're after sport Prime is going to have 20 premiership matches included, which would give you quite a lot of football. Also, fire stick with remote. I have Netflix as an app on my amazon fire homepage so get that through the stick as well.

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/11/2019 17:03

@Lovemenorca I'm the same with greys Anatomy....except the bastards aren't showing it now Angry

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/11/2019 17:14

I just rejigged mine.
Updated to SkyQ faster fibre, entertainment with box sets and Netflix, anytime calls, £49 pm
No contract either.

MockersFactCheckMN · 27/11/2019 17:14

The football on Amazon is in two batches, one next week and then the Boxing Day programme.

You can get both if you sign up for your (annual) free month of Prime.

MistyCloud · 27/11/2019 17:18

I ditched SKY about 4 years ago. Was costing £50 to £60 a month, and I had had enough. On top of Virgin Media internet and phone (internet was shit by the way,) we were paying around £120 a month.

So we switched to Freesat and another internet and landline provider.

Our Internet (excellent high-speed-broadband,) and our landline costs £40 a month for the two. And the Freesat box (that records up to around 100 to 150 programmes depending on the length,) cost us £220. And we have the same one 4 years later!

I would never go back. I missed 2 or 3 programmes from Sky One to start with, but managed to see them eventually through other sources.

I would just cancel SKY if I were you @OhWifey

TatianaLarina · 27/11/2019 17:20

@lightandairy56

I have a fire stick upstairs in my bedroom. That TV hasn't got any aerial socket in the wall to plug into. Does anyone know how I could watch live television with this set up?

You can just buy an updated version of an old TV aerial. Now they are flat and sit on a table.

VanGoghsDog · 27/11/2019 17:23

Surely it all depends what you want to watch?

I've never had any subscription TV and I don't miss it. I pay my TV licence and that's it. No recording device either. I have the Amazon Firestick to access apps so I can catch up in things I have missed on BBC and ITV.
I don't watch any sport.

Dp has Netflix so I can use his account on my TV but I rarely do. Oh, he also has Prime and the same, but I've logged into that.

If I want to watch a film I see what Amazon has and buy it as a one-off. If I want to watch a box set I wait a year or so, buy the box set second hand on ebay and give it to the charity shop afterwards.

I also buy films in charity shops to watch and then donate them back when I've seen them.
To be fair, I did recently have to buy a new DVD player though.

I might buy a new TV and if I do it will probably be a Smart TV, but I'll still just have Freeview.

VanGoghsDog · 27/11/2019 17:25

I've never* logged into his Prime account.

My broadband is £8pm, though I pay the landline 12m in advance as you get 20% off, it's £190pa that way.

Bubblysqueak · 27/11/2019 17:37

Can't recommend our fire sticks enough, we now have one on every TV in the house!

Babyg1995 · 27/11/2019 17:39

We got rid of sky best thing we ever done changed to virgin just for broadband and we all have firesticks saved a fortune

JemSynergy · 27/11/2019 17:47

Cancelled Sky last year after our bill got to about £140. We are now with NOW TV, they also look after existing costumers by offering various offers on their website which you can apply to your account. So far it we haven't missed Sky at all.

MonstranceClock · 27/11/2019 17:53

I phoned to cancel sky a few minths ago. Ended up with skyQ, 2 mini boxes, super fast broadband, kids tv, Netflix and a new iPhone Grin

Their sales team are otherworldly.

Straycatstrut · 27/11/2019 18:03

I just use Freeview & HDMI cable with laptop. If there's any series I want to watch I buy it on Amazon prime video & connect it to the TV, or I'll get Netflix & cancel after. Or even just buy the DVDs. But I'm not a big TV watcher so suits me.

I think I pay £37 for the medium broadband from virgin who are driving me mad with calls to upgrade - keep blacklisting them all. I'm also annoyed as they're advertising a TV & same Broadband package for less than what I pay.

Only reason I don't cancel with them is the installation of a new router from a new company is a one off payment of about £70! - found this out when I wanted to switch to vodafone who had a great deal. Not sure if the Broadband is as good as Virgins though which I'll admit has always been brilliant.

Redmarchingband · 27/11/2019 18:06

I’m in the process of moving but the developers have done a deal with BT so they’re the only broadband provider we can go with. Was quite happy with our Sky broadband package but it’s such a PITA to start from scratch again

stuarta99 · 27/11/2019 18:08

I was fortunate to call them during their offer before the Black Friday. I was on a legacy package from being with them for 12 years. I kept pushing them and in the end got entertainment/on demand (with Netflix)/sports/cinema/2tb Sky Q with multiroom for about £5/month more than I was paying. Moved across broadband from Virgin and now saving £30/month
