Cancelling Sky. What now?

I'm just on hold to Sky after another ridiculous bill. I'm ready to cancel unless they offer me something quite special. I will get pay as you go Sky Sports through our Now TV dongle. Should I buy a Smart TV? Any other good TV and Broadband packages? I'm a bit stuck in the noughties so I don't know what the best alternative is. Been used to having phone/broadband/TV all through Sky for the last 10 years

Don't bank on this - I'm a virgin customer paying over £70 a month.

What are you getting for £70?

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/11/2019 20:54

@bluetongue yep....we have a shit samsung 'smart' TV. Constantly freezing/stalling etc.

kaybee72 · 27/11/2019 20:56

IPTV....60 per year or 5 a month.
.all the channels you want ..includes all normal pay per view sports. all you need is a streaming stick

BestOption · 27/11/2019 21:25

I have Virgin & I love TiVo, I have talk talk for broadband & phone...together they’re more money than I want to be spending on phone &TV, I NEED to look into it, but need much more ☕️ before making sense of it all.

MsChatterbox · 27/11/2019 21:40

I pay 5.99 a month for Netflix and have my laptop connected to TV screen. Obviously no need for TV licence either.

Fatted · 27/11/2019 21:59

We stuck with sky, but it does get used a lot in our house because we do watch a lot of sports and movies.

I have chuckled at all the people on this thread who have got rid of Sky just to go to Now TV. Grin

Justaboy · 27/11/2019 22:13

FWIW..

Freeview is delivered by your TV aerial and the coverage of most all the UK is now very good quite a lot of chanells on offer but not Sky sports.

This site tells you what you can get and has a predictir thats to say it will tell you if your reception is lilkey to be OK or not.

www.freeview.co.uk/

Freesat is as it implies deivered by satllite its the same ASTRA series satellite dish thats oftern refered ot as a Sky dish tho you can get a dish installed independlenty of SKY its on their website.

www.freesat.co.uk/

You can get broadband from a number of providers one of the best is Zen Intenert who are reasonably priced and offer an excelent support service.

www.zen.co.uk/

Thats delivered over BT or Openreach wiring independleny of BT sky or anyone else you just deal with them direct and best fo all they have a UK call centre in the peoples republic of old Lancashire:).

VM where avaialbe are very good and fast but they arent cheap anymore.

Yes you can buy a decoder that gets you services on the net but use the BBC or ITV site directy if your not a TV addict!

HTH..

Dickorydockwhatthe · 27/11/2019 22:23

I think we have fibre optic!! We’ve moved to an older house so walls very solid so reception in some rooms is mot great!!

user1471590586 · 27/11/2019 22:32

We have reduced our SKY down to the minimum and also have Netflix and Amazon Prime. When Disney plus comes out next year we will get that too. At that point we may ditch sky.

willstarttomorrow · 28/11/2019 00:27

I was with Sky for years. When DH died we got rid of sports and movies as we were not using them. I then had a couple of years of haggling when threatening to leave and always got an okay deal for broadband and a tv package You have to hold your nerve and if they do not come up with a good rate be prepared to walk away. They will often call back with an offer to avoid you leaving.
However last year we finally left. My mobile company were offering broadband (without the need for a land line) at a better rate. We were using Netflix and Prime through a fire stick and not really using Sky. We do not miss it. We subsequently bought a now TV package for 3 months in a sale for £15 using their plug in stick and cancel and renew as we want . So I got to watch Chernobyl and other box sets for next to nothing and when I want to cancel I can. Usually I will be offered to continue for a few pounds a month if I try to cancel. I can also add movies if there are a few things I want to watch or over Xmas. We really do not miss Sky!

MsPepperPotts · 28/11/2019 01:01

I have Virgin Media broadband only.
Subscribe to Amazon Prime, Netflix and Now TV

I have a Smart TV but I use my PS4(also PS3 on second TV) to watch the Apps as I prefer it.
I also share my Netflix and Now TV account with my Adult DD and 2 grandsons who live elsewhere.

GRANDSON1 · 28/11/2019 06:50

Hi, I have been with sky for 20+ yrs. Keep saying I'm going to cancel but never do. Yesterday I tried to get them out to mend my box/dish as I have signal issues ...long story short, they can come out 20.2.20 !!!. Anyway, they kept brushing off the fixing option and are really keen on upgrading instead and trying to sell me sky Q for £7.50 more a month .
That's a total of £80 a month. I ideally would like to leave but need to keep my wifi, phone line (BT) and sky email address. Avid sports fans in the house so would need access to sports channels. Any advice would be gratefully recieved. Thank you

InfiniteSheldon · 28/11/2019 07:02

I have always had Sky got the total hump over high bills and left only to beg them to take me back after about 8 weeks; seriously can't live without live pause! The deals they were offering me after 6 weeks were incredible my bill went from £60 to £18 for 18 months so I agree with other posters that you need to leave to get the good deals.

ploopsie · 28/11/2019 07:15

We manage to get quite good deals with Sky although have a fairly basic package. I love the kids channels & Sky movies plus some of the functions. Personally I don't get the love for Prime (most things on there were an additional cost) & think Netflix is overrated. We have it for free but I find a lot of the good films are old ones & don't think some of the original content is as a good as it used to be. It will be interesting to see how the landscape will change when all the new subscriptions come out over the next few yrs.

Toomboom · 28/11/2019 07:29

Got rid of my Sky as just couldn't justify the costs anymore. I did contact them as I had been with them 10 + years, but they couldn't offer anything low enough for me to stay.
I now have a BT Youview box which is great. Can record, fast forward live TV, pause. everything I could do with Sky, but without the monthly costs. The Youview box was about £120, then that is it, no more costs.

I have a Amazon firestick for my TV in my bedroom which also works well, though no recording.

PhoneLock · 28/11/2019 07:33

They offered us some excellent deals when we cancelled but DH stuck to his guns and cancelled anyway.

If anything, the deal offers annoyed him because it made the full price look like a complete and utter rip-off.

Hurdygurdy24 · 28/11/2019 07:37
  • IPTV....60 per year or 5 a month. .all the channels you want ..includes all normal pay per view sports. all you need is a streaming stick*

Illegal though, and very limited “support” if anything ever stops working.

Also liable to stop working (hopefully) now various police forces etc have started trying to clamp down on and shut down the criminals that run the servers and sell the subscriptions.

Dbines96 · 28/11/2019 10:07

How i access sky sports is through the mobile tv app its 10.99. Then i cast it to my chromecast by screen mirroring. The easiest way to do this is on the google home app settings and press cast. Chromecasts are roughly 40 quid.

Foxssocks · 28/11/2019 12:19

Buy a freesat box. It has a load if the catch up channels and you can get ones that you can record to.
If your sky box still works you will get the free channels on it after you cancel.

If you want the extras ger now tv or a fire stick etc.

KaptenKrusty · 28/11/2019 12:48

I haven' had a tv package in years - we have a smart tv and I manage with bbc, itv, channel 5 & 6 players all free - then we have netflix & prime! Just get decent internet

malfoylovespotter · 28/11/2019 13:07

Can you watch Now TV in more than one room? Have 2 tellies only.

MsPepperPotts · 28/11/2019 15:34

@GRANDSON1
I was with Sky but changed a few years ago to Virgin Media( for the very fast broadband)
You can still keep you email address if your leave Sky. I still have mine from years ago.
Have you looked at BT(their broadband is fast too) for internet/wifi or Virgin Media?
If you Google 'Best broadband and phone deals' it will give you a list of comparison sites you can go to to look for a good deal

You can watch Sky Sports with Now TV so you either need a Smart TV that will have the app or another device that can load the Now TV App e.g. Now TV box, PS3 orPS4, Xbox, PC, Mac etc. etc. You can have up to 6 devices on your Now TV account.

(I have had the Sky F1 package this year...which gave me access to the main Sky Sports Channels, my grandson watches the footy I just watch F1, Cricket, NFL , Golf etc etc).
It's about £33 a month for the Sky Sports on Now TV but you can do it a lot cheaper on a mobile phone.

@malfoylovespotter
Yes you can watch Now TV on up to 2 devices at the same time.

You can have up to 6 devices on your account. You just need the Now TV App installed on both TVs whatever device you're using e.g. ps4, xbox etc

MLMsuperfan · 28/11/2019 15:36

You can watch Now TV on two devices simultaneously but no more.

IndieTara · 30/11/2019 12:37

I contacted them yesterday as I cancelled my Sky a couple of weeks ago. Predictably they didn't listen to what I wanted. Quoted my current package at £5 more than my current costs.!when I asked about about Black Friday deals they took £10 off.
I declined
