Hot chocolate ..don’t understand why it’s a “thing”

Often read threads on here that include talking about hot chocolate as a treat. For example, “ snuggling up with a hot chocolate”, posh hot chocolate as a present, a pick me up when feeling ill etc. I just didn’t realise it was a popular treat. Never crosses my mind! Not judging it has just amused me that I am so out of touch!

Sorry my title should really be “ Didn’t realise it was such a thing”

Do you not think it should be a treat? Or do you not realise that people drank it? I'm 30 and used to have hot chocolate as a treat on snow days etc so I dont think it's a new thing.

userxx · 06/11/2019 21:57

Wtf is a snow day? Hot chocolate is not a treat, it's a bog standard drink if you like that thing.

It’s nice. But I don’t see it as the panacea that others do on here. I’m bemused by the snuggling under blankets drinking hot chocolate, but each to their own.

Apolloanddaphne · 06/11/2019 21:58

I find it odd too as we are not a family that likes hot chocolate. But I guess others do.

Seeline · 06/11/2019 21:59

Give me a decent cup of tea any day.

flissity · 06/11/2019 22:00

If my Dd’s Snuggled under a blanket with hot chocolate it would be all over the sofa in minutes.

Ginnymweasley · 06/11/2019 22:00

A snow day is when your a kid and the school is shut cause of snow.... a snow day. Is that not a thing elsewhere in the uk? It's what we called it in yorkshire

LizB62A · 06/11/2019 22:01

Hot chocolate is pretty basic really.
Add a slug of brandy though and then you've got a treat !!

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 22:01

I meant I didn’t see it as a treat.ie, I wouldn’t class tea or coffee as a treat.

OP posts:
GeneHuntLover · 06/11/2019 22:01

It's not a thing, it's a drink that some people like and some people don't...rather like tea or coffee. Weird that you don't understand that people might like to drink it

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 22:02

I’m not saying I don’t understand why people like to drink it!

EskewedBeef · 06/11/2019 22:03

It seems indulgent I suppose, being sweet and creamy. It's like dessert in a cup.

JessicaRarebit · 06/11/2019 22:03

I personally hate the stuff but when my sisters come to London to visit me I’ll often buy the posh stuff and will make them a hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream. They love it. I’d say it’s a treat given the sugar content.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 06/11/2019 22:03

Agreed.
Although we made our own mix once, think it was a Jamie Oliver recipe, and it was a cut above the usual.
DD likes the galaxy instant in her morning travel mug for the bus.Luxury it is not!

57Varieties · 06/11/2019 22:03

I can’t stand hot chocolate, it’s always been around though.

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 06/11/2019 22:04

People like chocolate shocker.

JumpyLiz · 06/11/2019 22:05

It's a treat to me. I don't guzzle down sweet, chocolatey, alcoholic milky drinks on a three or four times a day basis usually

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 22:05

Cmon Fake you know that’s not what I’m saying

AbsentmindedWoman · 06/11/2019 22:06

Well if you enjoy it and don't have it all that often, it is a wee treat. Same as anything else really? Some folks buy a bunch of flowers, or taking a long bath with nice products, or a couple glasses of wine, or whatever.

I have 'healthy' low carb hot chocolate that I have at home sometimes and they're a nice mini treat. But I definitely enjoy having the odd fancy hot choc from a cafe over the winter now and again, which is a bigger treat but still relatively small iyswim Grin

lottiegarbanzo · 06/11/2019 22:06

Well there's hot chocolate and... hot chocolate. It is not a homogenous entity.

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 06/11/2019 22:06

Luxury is a Lubumba drunk on the ski slopes.
Or the traditional Spanish chocolate and a pile of fresh churros.

Apolloanddaphne · 06/11/2019 22:06

I get what the OP is saying. Snuggling with the family under a blanket drinking hot chocolate is talked about like it is decadent and luxurious. But is it really?

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/11/2019 22:07

Proper hot chocolate is a thing of wonder. Those vile packets and jars to mix with hot water are a travesty.
/end of rant

Justneedatemporaryname · 06/11/2019 22:07

Hot chocolate is my favourite drink after wine. But I'm low carbing now, so it definitely is a treat.
