Hot chocolate ..don’t understand why it’s a “thing”

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 21:48

Often read threads on here that include talking about hot chocolate as a treat. For example, “ snuggling up with a hot chocolate”, posh hot chocolate as a present, a pick me up when feeling ill etc. I just didn’t realise it was a popular treat. Never crosses my mind! Not judging it has just amused me that I am so out of touch!

@SapphireSeptember I will! I'll report back Wink You make the most of it when you're down. Mmmmmmmm!

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 07/11/2019 08:25

I don't really get it either OP but I'm one kd those weirdos who thinks all hot drinks are shit 🤷‍♀️

@Veterinari Nope, not been living under a rock but the north of England. Trudging in the snow to sit in a freezing class was exactly what we did. Not sure why you're so shocked.

EskewedBeef · 07/11/2019 10:16

You could apply this to anything that some people find comforting that others don't. Hot toddies, cuddles, mashed potato, watching Love Actually, petting animals...

It's not a difficult thing to get your head around is it, that drinking something sweet and creamy makes some people happy? Obviously not to everybody's taste, but not puzzling.

57Varieties · 07/11/2019 10:22

Well exactly @Veterinari. I’m not sure what being “hardcore” has to do with the fact that sometimes the (Scottish) school’s pipes froze and you can’t have small kids in a building with no water, or the heating broke, or staff couldn’t get there because of severe weather.

Pannalash · 07/11/2019 10:24

I know exactly what you mean OP. Surely these days hot choc is as easily available as tea and coffee. All the talk of Christmas Eve ‘new Pjs and hot choc’ gives me the unfestive rage Grin you can have it 365 days if the year FFS!

LemonPrism · 07/11/2019 11:26

@userxx well in the modern age we know TG at children who are turning blue from cold are unlikely to learn anything.

It's usually because the roads are dangerous or the heating pipes have frozen

SinkGirl · 07/11/2019 11:34

Every December I make a batch of hot chocolate mix using grated chocolate and various other things. I never drink hot chocolate when out but love a cup of proper stuff at home.

Gu used to make the most amazing cartons of super thick salted caramel hot chocolate. It was absolutely amazing.

Oh, and you have to toast sugar waffles and dunk them, obviously.

KondoKonvert · 07/11/2019 11:46

@AbsentmindedWoman @cavycavy I'd also like the low carb hot chocolate info please!!

SapphireSeptember · 07/11/2019 12:34

@QueenOfOversharing Thank you, I shall! Grin Hot chocolate is so metal. 🤘 I shall enjoy myself immensely. Smile

QueenOfOversharing · 07/11/2019 13:47

@SapphireSeptember haha! Who are you seeing at gig? I'm considering buying some Hotrl Chocolat chocolate to bring home. You know, in case of emergencies. WinkCake

Candlebarbara · 07/11/2019 13:57

It seems to be one of the requirements of the totally ridiculous Christmas Eve box, along with new PJs, a Christmas film, bath bomb and sweets. Handed out approximately 12 hours before dozens of presents the next morning...

SapphireSeptember · 07/11/2019 13:57

I'm seeing Lacuna Coil. Grin And I'm super excited! Yes, I might buy some chocolate too, just in case I get a bit peckish at the gig. Smile Better than crisps (assuming they sell any food at the venue.)

ShinyGiratina · 07/11/2019 13:58

I love hot chocolate but have to be careful with it as too much dairy can trigger my IBS. I don't drink tea or coffee, so occasionally having a pleasant hot drink that doesn't upset my digestive system is a nice warming treat.

I might have had a brief upset on recently discovering that Irish McDonalds don't have hot chocolate Grin It was the end of a visit with relatives who don't believe in central heating and I was thoroughly chilled to the core after several long cold days and had drunk nothing but water all through the visit and just wanted warming up on the insides with a hot drink that wasn't plain hot water and doesn't trigger IBS. My disappointment far outweighed my 8yo's Grin

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/11/2019 14:13

“Treat” hot chocolate is when I make it by melting grated chocolate into hot milk and adding whipped cream and chocolate flakes (sometimes a slug of brandy too).

That is totally different to when I use the Cadbury instant stuff.

Pepperwand · 07/11/2019 14:45

Ahh see I'm poor and don't get out much so try to take enjoyment from little "treats". This includes a really nice hot chocolate made with milk not water, having a bubble bath, lighting a nice scented candle, sitting under a blanket on the sofa and feeling all cosy. I think it's nice to seek pleasure and enjoyment from the small things in life, little luxuries make life more pleasant.....for me anyway!

myolivetree · 07/11/2019 15:33

Def " a thing" at my house. Shoot us.

After reading this thread I am making a detour to by some chocolate.

What I want is some of that thick melted stuff in an expresso cup.

raspberryk · 07/11/2019 15:43

A proper hot chocolate is a treat!

Whattodoabout · 07/11/2019 15:45

It’s a treat because it’s usually calorific so not the sort of thing most people have every day. I usually add whipped cream and marshmallows so definitely a treat.

BarbedBloom · 07/11/2019 15:47

I use actual chocolate flakes melted with cream and milk when I have hot chocolate, so for me it is a treat.

Also the schools round here close often for snow days because none of the teachers live anywhere near now due to house prices. If teachers can't get in then there is no one to supervise the children. When I was in school in the 80s they still closed on bad days but many of our teachers lived within walking distance.

INeedNewShoes · 07/11/2019 15:58

Nope, not been living under a rock but the north of England. Trudging in the snow to sit in a freezing class was exactly what we did. Not sure why you're so shocked.

The North of England covers quite a big area. In the bit I grew up in, when it really snowed, getting to school was out of the question for all children and staff except those who lived in the school's village.

I can still taste the delight of a parent coming along to the bus stop where we were waiting for the school bus to tell us that school was closed or buses cancelled due to the snow - cue mass cheering and a dash to the nearest sledging field! Those were the days Grin

SistersOfPercy · 07/11/2019 16:37

I'm a Northerner and was at school in the 70's and 80's. Our boiler was knackered more than it worked and we had very regular snow days. Like someone said above there were telephone trees, but my Nan lived opposite the site so I'd often wander over and be turned back.
Happy times.
Nan would always make me an Ovaltine rather than a chocolate though, and if I was quick I'd steal a dry teaspoons worth because I was an odd kid that just loved it dry.

Leflic · 07/11/2019 17:09

Fantastic marketing. Used to be for old people before they went to bed.

labazsisgoingmad · 07/11/2019 17:24
