Hot chocolate ..don’t understand why it’s a “thing”

Often read threads on here that include talking about hot chocolate as a treat. For example, “ snuggling up with a hot chocolate”, posh hot chocolate as a present, a pick me up when feeling ill etc. I just didn’t realise it was a popular treat. Never crosses my mind! Not judging it has just amused me that I am so out of touch!

Analagously, eating chocolate can be 'food' and it can be a 'treat', depending both upon what sort of chocolate it is and what sort you like.

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 22:09

ApolloExactly. And I’m not criticising anyone for it either .Im just saying it wasn’t until I read it on here that I realised it’s seen as an event in itself

It's the cold weather equivalent of an ice cream, really. Delicious, and at a temperature you crave, but too full of fat and sugar (especially if you go for whipped cream and marshmallows and similar toppings) to be an everyday thing.

I physically cringe when a gift suggestion is a ‘naice mug with a sachet of hot choc and mini marshmellows’ (sic)

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 06/11/2019 22:11

Agreed. I've never seen the fascination

userxx · 06/11/2019 22:12

@Ginnymweasley Schools in the mid 1970, and 80's didn't close because of snow, you'd trek there regardless turning up hours late then slowly turning blue throughout the day as it was fucking freezing. I can't believe schools close because of snow!

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 06/11/2019 22:12

I drink it v occasionally so see it a a treat but I use it to dip marmite on toast in Blush or less weird, pain au chocolat so it has to be a treat for me

Elieza · 06/11/2019 22:13

Proper hot choc made with milk in a pan is great! Total treat as it’s such a faff compared to putting a spoon of coffee in a mug.
I’m off dairy or I’d be tempted right now! Must try with my soya milk....

Knittedfairies · 06/11/2019 22:13

Me neither.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 06/11/2019 22:15

I don’t get shocked or bewildered that people like hot chocolate as a treat. We aren’t a family who drink it but it doesn’t cross my mind to be concerned others do?

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 06/11/2019 22:16

It’s not really an event either lol, some people chill out with a glass of wine in the evening some enjoy a hot drink 😂

MustardScreams · 06/11/2019 22:17

I love hot chocolate, but it has to be done properly! Whole milk & cream poured over v good grated dark chocolate with a touch of brown sugar. Only need a tiny cup of it, but it’s delicious.

Powdered crap isn’t a treat.

Grafittiqueen · 06/11/2019 22:18

@userxx my school in Scotland was closed in the 80s much more frequently because of snow than my DCs has ever been.

Agree with whoever said it's the cold weather equivalent of an ice cream. My two love having a hot chocolate after being out in the cold/snow.

PavlovaFaith · 06/11/2019 22:19

If you don't see how hot chocolate is a treat then you're doing it wrong! Brew

MrsGrindah · 06/11/2019 22:20

I’m not concerned. I’m just chatting..in Chat. I’m not after banning it or anything...

Reallybadidea · 06/11/2019 22:21

On Mumsnet it is usually 'hot choc'. Presumably the last 2 syllables are too much effort when you still have to put on your PJs before you can start snuggling on the sofa under a blanket.

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/11/2019 22:21

Of course they closed when there was snow. I remember it happening.

And hot chocolate is not a drink like tea or coffee. You don’t generally have that much sugar in tea or coffee and nor do you cover them in whipped cream or marshmallows.

Neither is it a new thing. People have been drinking chocolate since the Aztecs and it was hugely popular in Victorian times.

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2019 22:23

It's ok but it's not a treat IMO however it's made.

I hate those mug sets they sell at Christmas with marshmallows etc.

meow1989 · 06/11/2019 22:23

I just bought some Sticky Toffee Pudding White Hot Chocolate and oh my gosh it is the most delicious thing.
Also partial to a black forest hot chocolate.

DappledThings · 06/11/2019 22:25

A snow day is when your a kid and the school is shut cause of snow.... a snow day. Is that not a thing elsewhere in the uk

It is definitely what it is called in lots of parts of the UK Many years ago a substation failed causing a major power cut closing businesses all down Aldwych in London. We all got sent home from work because it wasnt safe and everyone was calling that a snow day too because it was a random, unexpected day off.

FunnyInjury · 06/11/2019 22:26

Hot chocolate in the morning reminds me of my school french exchange trips Smile

Indulgent though and so I suppose it is a treat due to my mid-life waistline Wink

SapphireSeptember · 06/11/2019 22:26

Get thee to a Hotel Chocolat cafe. That stuff is my crack. You only need one though. Grin Someone I know owns their hot chocolate making machine and I want one so badly (it's £100 though!) Would be cheaper in the long term though. But then I wouldn't get the chocolate mousse they put on top...

Noroof · 06/11/2019 22:28

I've never had or tried a hot chocolate

Ginnymweasley · 06/11/2019 22:29

It's not like schools closed for a sprinkling is it? But proper snow then yes schools close. I went to a small village school, I'm sure most of the kids could have walked there but the main problem was it was fairly rural and most of the teachers drove in and the snow stopped them getting there so you tend not to be able to open a school with no teachers. I dont understand what the issue with the term or concept of a snow day is? With or without hot chocolate.

OtraCosaMariposa · 06/11/2019 22:30

I'm jot a fan personally. I dint consider it a treat and neither do the kids. Anyone who talks about snuggling on sofas with blankets and hot choc should be taken out and shot for being so twee. (Only half joking)
