Having a small disagreement with DH, is it;

Turk-wise
Or
Turk-woys
Or other.

How do you say quay or mosquito? No 'w' sound in them

JumpyLiz · 03/11/2019 10:05

Turkoyce

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2019 10:09

As it is a french rooted word the Oi produces the ‘w’ sound as in croissant. Etc. Or Renoir.

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2019 10:10

But I say tur-coys mostly rather than go full-on french.

MulticolourMophead · 03/11/2019 10:10

Tur-Kwoice (end rhymes with voice)

This is probably closer to how people say it round here.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 03/11/2019 10:10

Turk-waaas

EstebanTheMagnificent · 03/11/2019 10:11

But turkwoise is the only phonetically logical Anglicised pronunciation. ‘qu’ before a vowel is ‘kw’. ‘oi’ gives the vowel sound from ‘toy’ or ‘boy’.

Footle · 03/11/2019 11:16

I'm not going to offer an opinion , just wanted to say it's an excellent question.

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2019 11:21

Bloody ‘bwillyant’ question.

lazylinguist · 03/11/2019 11:24

But turkwoise is the only phonetically logical Anglicised pronunciation.

That is true (and that's how I pronounce it), but let's face it, since when did the English language consistently follow logical pronunciation rules?

lazylinguist · 03/11/2019 11:28

‘qu’ before a vowel is ‘kw’.

Not in 'queue' or 'technique'.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 03/11/2019 12:39

Very true @lazylinguist. Darned English!

Sagradafamiliar · 03/11/2019 16:35

'Queue' and 'technique' are French words, though. The way English say them are just an Anglicised version of the French way.
As is 'turquoise'....gah!

Smidge001 · 03/11/2019 16:44

Turkwoys.

I can accept turk-oys.

But rhyming with voice or waaaahs are clearly nonsense Grin

lazylinguist · 03/11/2019 21:24

The waaahs isn't nonsense if you're pronouncing it like French, which is where it came from.

Smidge001 · 04/11/2019 06:25

I hope you say par-ee then too...

Tink1990 · 04/11/2019 06:42

Turk woys

cauliflowersqueeze · 04/11/2019 06:47

Turk oyz

MiddleClassProblem · 04/11/2019 07:07

@Smidge001 but there’s French words you pronounce like ballet and bouquet etc

I’m not sure why we do some and not others though...

lowlandLucky · 04/11/2019 08:40

Tur kwoys

Smidge001 · 04/11/2019 19:41

@MiddleClassProblem that is so true! There's never a rule is there Grin.

ActualHornist · 04/11/2019 19:47

Tur kwoys.

I see the logic in the other ways but they sound odd to me. Well, tur koys sounds American and tur quaz sounds affected!

lazylinguist · 05/11/2019 14:44

I hope you say par-ee then too...

No I don't (unless I'm speaking in French). I wasn't saying people should pronounce it turkwaahz (I don't). I was just saying it's not really 'nonsense' to pronounce it that way, considering it does come from French.
