What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

Is a bit different but I really want to know who Ronan Farrow's father is.

Apparently he is very close to Frank Sinatra's family, so I assume he could do a DNA test if he wanted. Or maybe he has and just doesn't want to make the results public.

I just find it very intriguing. Does he really not care? He just makes light of the whole thing.

BlackCatSleeping · 01/11/2019 12:43

Sorry, I realised the thread is true crime not unsolved mysteries. Ignore my post. Obviously it's not an actual crime.

I still want to know though!

Potnoodledoo · 01/11/2019 12:49

@BlackCatSleeping its not a crime but it has me baffled as well.

whitershadeofpale · 01/11/2019 14:17

@BlackCatSleeping and @Potnoodledoo I know FS's family have said it's impossible but I think the resemblance is far too strong for him not to be his biological father. He looks nothing like WA at all. I think he's probably not tested as:

a) he already knows
b) he would find it upsetting if he had WA's genes and would rather be ignorant just in case.

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/11/2019 14:40

I think there are many cases (many more than we will probably ever know about) where police have a pretty good idea what has happened/who to suspect, but lack of evidence means that they can't do anything and just have to watch and wait for their suspect to make a mistake.

Frustrating, but inevitable, if there is no forensic or other evidence with which to secure a definite prosecution.

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2019 15:26

My friend is a lawyer for CPS. She says what you're all saying.

They take evidence and have to evaluate what it means. If the defence can find a plausible other explanation and they can't prove the defence wrong the have to wait. Sometimes more evidence comes to light and sometimes they have to accept case won't get to court because there isn't enough evidence to prove "beyond reasonable doubt".

She has told me before that whilst she's had evidence and can use evidence to prove crime she's also had to go through 3/4 'convictions' before they'll accept the evidence proves 'manslaughter' 'murder' 'GBH' or whatever. Obviously I don't know any case details (until convictions and they are public to everyone). So if a case goes to court as modern but intent to murder isn't beyond reasonable doubt they have to go for manslaughter or something. Sometimes they'll proceed with lesser conviction and sometimes they'll wait and gather more evidence and intelligence.

Potnoodledoo · 01/11/2019 16:22

I think Ronan Farrow is the image of Mia.But he does look a lot like Frank as well.

HeronLanyon · 01/11/2019 16:28

I’m a criminal defence barrister. Cps charging standards 1. Is there a realistic prospect of a conviction (on admissible evidence) AND 2. Is it in the public I retest to prosecute. Often there is evidence but not eg of intention to kill. In that case the cps may well jettison a count of murder (for which they need to prove so that the jury are sure) every element including intention to kill and proceed on eg manslaughter where the intention/recklessness is more straightforward (easier to prove).

HeronLanyon · 01/11/2019 16:29

Public interest not ‘I retest’.

CoolCarrie · 01/11/2019 16:40

Ronan Farrow looks like his grandfather, mia’s father, and also looks like Sinatra .

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/11/2019 09:11

halokitties
The soul asylum video had to be edited/have bits removed in Australia (I think) as some of the missing people featured had just been discovered at Belangelo.
There are many true crimes that baffle me, most have been mentioned but can I just add the disappearance of Lyn Dawson.
She had a seemingly perfect life and disappeared. Turned out that her husband was sleeping with one of his students and had basically moved her in. Poor Lyn was being pushed out of her own family.
He then officially moved the student in straight after she "disappeared" claiming she had run off to join a cult.

Izzabellasasperella · 02/11/2019 11:19

Damien Nettles. He went out one evening and never came home. So sad for his mother and family.
I live near to where he disappeared and knew some of the people later rumoured to have been involved.
There is a series on iplayer called the boy who disappeared. Also his Mum wrote a book which is just heartbreaking.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 02/11/2019 12:24

Izzabellasasperella I know the people rumoured to be involved to,I'd bet my mortgage they know exactly what happened. So sad.

Squigean · 02/11/2019 12:31

All missing person cases are awful aren't they. How does a person disappear, whether by choice or not. There are people who know the whereabouts and just say nothing.

Phoebesgift · 02/11/2019 12:51

The Memendez brothers. I know they did it but if they were being abused by their parents why give them life without parole. Harsh.

Izzabellasasperella · 02/11/2019 13:00

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor I wish one of them would come forward and tell the truth.
Could they still be prosecuted even though they would blame a dead man?

BlackCatSleeping · 02/11/2019 13:01

I worked with a guy who someone told me was using a fake name. I have no idea what his story was or why he was using a fake name. It was all a bit odd.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 02/11/2019 13:37

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor I wish one of them would come forward and tell the truth
Could they still be prosecuted even though they would blame a dead man?

That would require an effective police force.Sad

dayswithaY · 02/11/2019 14:02

I think Ronan Farrow does know that he is Frank's son but doesn't want to say as it might give ammunition to Woody Allen. It would mean that Mia was unfaithful and and allowed Woody to think that he was the father. Hard to believe Woody Allen could father someone who looks like Ronan.

allabouteve1 · 02/11/2019 14:33

@LivinLaVidaLoki there is a great podcast about Lyn Dawson called teacher's pet. It has left me with no doubt that the husband killed her.

ManonBlackbeak · 02/11/2019 14:51

Frank Sinatra wanted to have Woody Allen killed because of his behaviour.

VirtualHamster · 02/11/2019 14:53

Not quite in the same vein, as there was a conclusion. But i lived nearby when Shawn Hornbeck went missing and participated in various searches. Waking up one morning four years later and thousands of miles away to discover they'd found him was astonishing. Amazed that he was found only 50 odd miles away from where he was taken.

crustycrab · 02/11/2019 14:55

@Pancakeflipper how do you know she's dead?

Izzabellasasperella · 02/11/2019 15:00

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor Did you know the dead man? Do you think he did it?

Sagradafamiliar · 02/11/2019 16:39

Can anybody who mentioned the boy who went missing after Andrew Gosden, say who it is please? I've not heard of another case from the area.
