Tonsillitis, no food or drink for two days

Shoe throat started Saturday evening by Sunday I couldn't get out of bed. Last proper meal was Saturday eve since then all I've managed is some yoghurt and a mini milk lolly and about a glass of squash. Soluble paracetamol not helping any more, throat feels more and more swollen and I'd rather spit saliva than swallow it. Dragged muddled to the Dr this afternoon, who prescribed throat spray that didn't help much and I can't take the penicillin he gave me. Still have temperature and strong pins and needles feelings in my hands and legs. DH called 111 at 9.30pm and we're still waiting for a call back. Hungry, thirsty, tired and very sore. Feeling very sorry for myself. Never, ever felt this ill before.

Why can't you take the penicillin?

managedmis · 22/10/2019 00:56

You've only had a glass of squash since sat evening? If so you need to go to a and e

Quinsy?
A and E job if you can't drink or swallow saliva.

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 00:59

I can't swallow anything other than tiny, tiny sips. But they're more like uncontrolled gulps that are excruciating. Never, ever known pain like this.

Get some ice lollies and suck them. Sorry you’re feeling so rough; hope your recovery is swift.

zebra22 · 22/10/2019 01:06

Unless you are allergic you need to try and get the penicillin down and as much fluid as possible

Summer135 · 22/10/2019 01:06

I really feel for you! I used to suffer with this every couple of months for years and I remember not being able to swallow my own spit as the pain is excruciating. Mine used to last a good week before it got better. Try your best to take the penicillin no matter what - when I did I couldn't believe how fast it can work. It's worth a try with ice pops but when it's that sore it's hard. I haven't got much else advice really but hope you get better quickly!!

managedmis · 22/10/2019 01:15

I've had tonsillitis a few times, once when I was so bad I couldn't speak. Swallowing was agony but I forced myself to drink. If you really can't swallow fluid and the penicillin you'll have to see a doctor ASAP.

Nat6999 · 22/10/2019 01:24

Suck crushed ice, it will relieve the pain, soluble paracetamol & children's ibuprofen liquid will go down. If you can't swallow your antibiotics, ask your GP for children's syrup form.

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 01:29

111 just called back and said they'd fax a prescription for a liquid version of penicillin to the pharmacy. I'll have to wait until it opens to get it. Trying with little sips of fluid but the pain is indescribable. DH bought me some ice cream earlier but, without wishing to sound ungrateful, it was Cadbury Flake variety and by the time I chewed up the bits of chocolate so I could swallow it, the ice cream was no longer cold and didn't help to soothe at all. Sorry for such a self indulgent moan.

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 01:31

Any idea how much children's ibuprofen I can take? I'll leave the Calpol alone for now as I've only just managed to finish the soluble paracetamol that I started at 9.30pm.

Cold, softly set jelly hurts less than liquid. Helps hydrate you a little.

I’ve been in your situation and it was appalling. Crushed ice/ice lollies/any liquids were no good, impossibly painful. Jelly changed everything.

Wilmalovescake · 22/10/2019 02:11

Fuck waiting till morning.
I think you should actually be seen tonight.

SpiderHunter · 22/10/2019 02:18

As long as you can physically swallow liquid / jelly / ice cream you need to as much as possible no matter how much it hurts. If you get to the point of physically not being able to swallow then you need A&E. I've had every version of tonsillitis and it truly sucks - hope you feel better soon Thanks

SpiderHunter · 22/10/2019 02:21

Can DH go to a 24hr pharmacy for your prescription? Or could you crush up the tablet ones in to yoghurt and eat that? The sooner you get started the better.

minesagin37 · 22/10/2019 03:32

I bet you feel completely crap but I think it's more important to get the tablets down rather than bits of chocolate. Crush them. There are pharmacies with longer opening times. Probably need to drive further though.

NoSauce · 22/10/2019 04:54

True tonsillitis is awful, I really feel for you OP. Hope you start to feel a little better very soon.

Daisychainsandglitter · 22/10/2019 06:07

Oh OP I really feel for you. I've had tonsillitis since Thursday and the pain is absolutely dreadful!!
My antibiotics have started to work now so am uncomfortable rather than in agony but I was you a few days ago.
I hope once you manage to get hold of liquid antibiotics you start to feel better Thanks

Sleephead1 · 22/10/2019 06:14

The last time I had it this is what I did and I do think it helped me recover a bit quicker. Along with antibiotics I gargled really salty water for as long as I could, I also squeezed lemon into water and drank that as I read lemon is good for tonsillitis. I also forced myself to drink and eat anything I could manage and timed it to eat once painkillers had kicked in. I think this helped as I remember having it once and not eating and It took longer to get over it and I remember trying to get downstairs and just everything spinning and me shaking so much I had to shuffle down on my bum. If you cant drink I would go to hospital as there is also a condition called Quinsy that is an absess in the throat so I would want to get that checked.

midcenturylegs · 22/10/2019 06:16

I don't know if they make them but it really sounds as if you could do with pessaries for both pain relief and antibiotics!

Really feel for you OP, tonsillitis is a bastard. Make sure you find some way of getting the drugs in you - within 36 hrs you'll see a marked improvement

CupoTeap · 22/10/2019 06:22

I feel for you, I had it a couple of months ago.

You are going to end up in hospital if you don't drink something. I found an ice filled water bottle slightly easier than a cup.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/10/2019 06:39

I’ve had it this bad too, you will get better. What time does pharmacy open?

notmytea · 22/10/2019 06:46

I have tonsilittis quite a bit and these tablets are amazing, can get over the counter at the pharmacy although check with pharmacist you can take them with the penecillin

I hope you went to A&E? I would be worried about sepsis.
