Tonsillitis, no food or drink for two days

Shoe throat started Saturday evening by Sunday I couldn't get out of bed. Last proper meal was Saturday eve since then all I've managed is some yoghurt and a mini milk lolly and about a glass of squash. Soluble paracetamol not helping any more, throat feels more and more swollen and I'd rather spit saliva than swallow it. Dragged muddled to the Dr this afternoon, who prescribed throat spray that didn't help much and I can't take the penicillin he gave me. Still have temperature and strong pins and needles feelings in my hands and legs. DH called 111 at 9.30pm and we're still waiting for a call back. Hungry, thirsty, tired and very sore. Feeling very sorry for myself. Never, ever felt this ill before.

I get this really bad, you need to get difflam (the mouthwash not the spray) it's expensive but a miracle worker

HelloYouTwo · 22/10/2019 06:59

This sounds like a quinsy (abscess on your tonsils) -The inability to swallow even saliva is a key indicator. Is your voice a bit funny too? They refer to it as hot potato voice, I guess like you’ve just eaten something really hot and are whispering raspily.

Anyway if a abscess you need it drained and some hefty antibiotics and you need it done ASAP. Go to A&E and demand a proper examination (I saw 3 doctors before mine was diagnosed- this first 2 didn’t actually look in my mouth!)

InDubiousBattle · 22/10/2019 07:01

How old are you op? I would go to a&e if you can't swallow the anti biotic. My nephew ended up in the high dependency unit with a Quinsy after having tonsillitis initially.

littlecupcake have you experimented with both warm and cold fluids? Like other posters, I've had all sorts of tonsillitis and some I couldn't bear cold on my throat but warm drinks were fine. Especially honey and lemon drinks - homemade ones with extra honey Grin. Sometimes only jelly and ice cream would do.

Really hope you feel better soon - don't worry about not eating., You can go for weeks without food but do please try and keep your fluids up as much as possible.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/10/2019 08:37

20ml if ibuprofen and 20ml of 6+ paracetamol, are adult doses.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/10/2019 08:39

I also found ward drink easier than cold when I had glandular fever.

yellowallpaper · 22/10/2019 10:37

Difflam spray is available over the counter so 8 would ask DH to get this with the prescription

BarbedBloom · 22/10/2019 11:07

I was like this when I had Quinsy. I was admitted to hospital as I couldn't swallow anything. I hope you have been seen OP

HelloYouTwo · 22/10/2019 14:25

How are you @littlecupcake?

Nat6999 · 22/10/2019 16:11

One ibuprofen tablet is 200mg, it should say on the bottle what dose is in one spoonful, multiply that up to 400mg equivalent to 2 tablets.

guiltynetter · 22/10/2019 18:11

how are you feeling?

CupoTeap · 22/10/2019 19:32

How are you feeling?

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 19:56

Thank you for all your kind words and good wishes. Still struggling but have managed some soup and more yoghurt. Really fancy mashed potato with cheese and butter so I'll get some of of the freezer for tomorrow. Prescription for liquid penicillin didn't get to the chemist but I've managed to take two lots and will get another dose down before I go to sleep. Probably feeling pretty ropey because of lack of food as well to be honest. DH and DC have been superstars.

I never knew tonsillitis was so evil. Sympathies with those of you who have had it before. It's horrendous.

I'd been seen OP-either GP or A&E.

Can go septic very quickly and it sounds like yours are pretty bad.

DS struggled for years-ended up in A&E and then admitted when he couldn't swallow his own saliva.

Good luck!!

PeopleMover · 22/10/2019 20:06

I had this last year. It's hell! I felt like I had a ball in my throat, couldn't speak or swallow without unbearable pain. I got an OOH appointment (DH had to force me to go because by this point I just wanted to lay in my bed and die Blush) and they prescribed antibiotics.

I know it's torture, but you just have to get the antibiotics down you. It takes a day or so, but the swelling will get better.

Hope you are better soon.

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 20:27

If I'm no better in the morning I'll go back to the gp. I'm hoping that the medicine will start to work now. I'm a bit more interested in trying to eat - mash defrosting for tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to that! Craving savory rather than sweet which is very unusual for me! Suggestions of anything else I could try would be most welcome. I've eaten so little since Saturday yet don't feel at all hungry. It's very strange. DH has just popped out to find some water ice lollies, rather than anything creamy, that just seems to make me feel more mucous-y.

Span1elsRock · 22/10/2019 20:30

When I had it last, I managed to drink some protein powder shakes made with lots of ice so they slipped down. That way you're getting some calories and liquid too. You really need to watch for dehydration.

It's horrendous, I hope you feel better soon.

Oblomov19 · 22/10/2019 20:31

Hope you are feeling better OP. It is truely nasty!

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 20:35

Oh my word. DH is amazing. Fruit Pastille lolly is so amazing Grin

OP posts:
Inebriati · 22/10/2019 20:44

Do you know how to check yourself for dehydration?

NoSauce · 22/10/2019 20:48

Good that you fancy eating a bit OP! Hope you feel loads better tomorrow!

Legomadx2 · 22/10/2019 20:49

Tonsillitis makes you feel like you're dying. I hope you feel better soon.

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 20:49

Not really. I keep getting pins and needles in my hands and feet but I think that's to do with shallow breathing. I tend to get headaches if I haven't drunk enough and my head is OK (or maybe I just can't feel it because of my throat)!

OP posts:
MsFrosty · 22/10/2019 20:52

I've always found those first few swallows are agony but once you power through that it's not as bad as then when I would take some tablets. 24 hrs after taking the penicillin you will feel like a new person

littlecupcake · 22/10/2019 20:55

Cross posted, sorry! Yep, I agree it makes you feel like death! Never, ever felt so unwell before.

Ice lolly and an enormous ice cube in my glass of squash has really helped to soothe my throat. Fingers crossed I can start building up some energy again. I'm going to be dreaming about mashed potato tonight, I really fancy it! A trip downstairs and back up again was a monumental effort. I think it'll take a bit of time to bounce back from this Hmm
