Would you leave your dog outside a shop?

This has caused quite the debate in my family this morning as no one agrees with my opinion!

I have but only once or twice as she's not happy if she can't see me. Also it's a village shop and glass fronted so I can see her.

General consensus is don t (risk of theft, risk of people petting dog and accident happening etc).

But I do, outside our local corner shops. Wouldn’t tie her up outside the supermarket or in the muddle of a busy town, but local shop for bread & milk (& a cheeky dog treat sometimes!) then yes.

But my dog is very calm, no separation anxiety and loves a fuss from anyone.

I do leave mine outside one particular shop but I can see (or at least hear) her and it’s in a quiet, v naice area

No, even though where I live is regarded as a safe and quiet area, it’s too much of a risk but I don’t judge others that do so in the same or similar areas. However, in an area known for dog thefts or abuse, I wouldn’t expect anyone to leave their dog outside.

Also, whilst she is super calm and lives a fuss, she is also a stubborn thing if she thinks I’m being left behind and would firmly plant her arse on the pavement and refuse to go with a stranger if she knew I was inside the shop. She can be even quite immovable if she tries If I try to leave her with friends and family whilst on a walk (to nip into a shop) this is what happens- they find it funny but frustrating!

Not unless a very small shop in a village where I can see them all the time, and only then once in a blue moon if absolutely desperate. I don't leave them in the garden unless I'm watching them either. I'd be devastated if they were stolen or went missing because I'd done something stupid.

My older one, yes but the younger one no. Older one just sits and waits, younger one raises hell, even if I leave her with DD while I pop in the shop. But I never really did with the younger one, older one was a rescue and seemed happy with it so maybe a previous owner did it regularly. When we're out for a walk that's what we do and it's more like she's furious she has to wait or thinks I've gone on without her I think. She's the same if we stop and talk to someone or try and sit on a bench while out walking, she doesn't get why we've stopped and gets agitated even off lead. We must walk!

Absolutely not. So much could go wrong. I know someone who left her dog outside her local corner shop in a quiet community while she nipped in for bread and never saw her again.

I just saw a post on FB where someone stole a 15 year old mongrel that was attached to a mobility scooter outside a HOSPITAL.

People have no morals and no dog is safe.

Even if you think your dog isn't worth 'money' it could be used as a bait dog, people steal dogs for this reason very often :(

Not worth it.

Never, they could be stolen or tormented by teenagers, a child could pester them and get bitten plus it can't be nice waiting outside in all weathers not knowing if you're going to be few minutes or a few hours.
Every dog I've seen tied up outside looks anxious.

I do not plan to do it. If I go out to go shopping I leave her at home.

If Im outside the shop and quickly need something I will do, but never too long. My neighbourhood is safe but my dog can be nervous around strangers. Nothing bad has happened and as she's a mongrel/crossbreed she isn't a targeted dog to dognap and breed.

No, not under any circumstances. I don't even leave my dog outside unattended, well what I mean is I watch her quite closely if she is outside and i am still inside. Although I live rurally with a big garden there have been so many reports of dog thefts I simply wouldn't risk her being out of my sight for any length of time.

Nope, never... our local corner shop/newsagent welcomes dogs as does our post office and our pharmacy, so thankfully can do pick-ups without having to take dog home first.

No! Same as I wouldn’t leave a baby or toddler tied up outside a shop! Actually the baby would be less likely to be stolen I suspect. Honestly dogs are stolen all the time for baiting

I don't have a dog at the moment, but no, I wouldn't!

No, not because I have a designer dog that would be worth anything sold on, but because I have an older rescue who could be stolen as a bait dog and I could think of nothing worse!

I know a lot of my non dog owning friends and PIL have no idea how often dogs are stolen these days for any purpose, and all look at me like I'm mad when it comes up, none of them would have thought twice.

My ddogs are worth a lot of £££ and priceless to our family. Def a no from me. As a dc I did all the time. Sadly wouldn't now.

I have a little staffy xbred and he would be ideal for baiting so it is my biggest fear so would never leave him unattended. He is such a lovely little trusting dog and I don't think i would ever get over it if he was used in such a way.

Dog theft is a thing both for resale and baiting... but also...

Other people’s dogs having a random go, collars and harnesses can come off or break and then your dog is loose next to a road, you can’t stop children being too rough if you’re not there and this time of year, people setting off fireworks is a risk too.

No way.

Certain undesirables used to try and offer us cash to buy our old dog. And people can be a bit thick with dogs and approaching them.

Nor do I think people should tie their dogs up outside the school gates, where the poor thing sits and barks and cries waiting to be retrieved and a thousand toddlers go and pat the nice doggy, nearly getting their fingers bitten off.
