Would you leave your dog outside a shop?

This has caused quite the debate in my family this morning as no one agrees with my opinion!

OP posts:

I did for the first time the other week. In the park/woods, ddog stays til told to move, even if I go out of sight. Not outside ruddy shops, tho, I discovered! It’s a row of local shops, I was literally 2 steps inside sending a parcel, I watched him the whole time and he a) tried to walk away b) tried to get in the shop. Never again. Also, I’d die if he were nicked.

MrsMozartMkII · 21/10/2019 18:35

Nope.

Despite their breeds (Rotties and a GSD) I'd be worried they'd be taken.

I used to leave a Rottie / GSD outside, only he'd then guard the shop and no-one else could enter, though they could leave okay.

LolaSmiles · 21/10/2019 18:39

No. I'd be devastated if anything happened to them. It's not just physical harm to them either, I'd be concerned about them being antagonised and being scared.

I'd be even more concerned given how many parents on MN seem to think that it's unreasonable to expect them to keep an eye on their children, and think it's acceptable to allow their toddlers to grab, shout at dogs, and so on. The consensus with some fools is their child is more than entitled to harrass animals and if a dog gets scared then it should be put down.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/10/2019 18:40

No way, for all the reasons already mentioned.

Babyroobs · 21/10/2019 18:41

Never. I am too afraid of them being stolen.

Wacawaca19 · 21/10/2019 18:53

No I wouldn’t that’s one reason why I’m not getting a dog.

MoaningMinniee · 21/10/2019 19:00

No. I have a properly ventilated dog van so if I do need to dive into the shop for milk and bread on the way home I leave them there. Sadly there is a value for bastard dog thieving criminals in any dog they can lay their hands on, whether it's breeding or baiting. Or ransom - how often do we see facebook posts about 'reward offered, no questions asked?'??

Rainyrain · 21/10/2019 19:14

Never. I would never forgive myself if he was stolen or escaped and got run over

CherryPavlova · 21/10/2019 19:18

Village shop where he’s known then yes. In a town, no.

Beth3886 · 21/10/2019 19:44

Why would you?
But I feel bad for leaving them at home?

I get both.
If I've spent enough time with them that day, then yes leave at home.
If not, arrange around it. This includes asking a member of staff to help look after my dog! Which I know they would!
If not, then no.. Arrange around it and have some you know who you trust to look after whilst you do your shop. At home or outside shop.

Money paid or dog for free or dog in need/shelter: my responsibility.

And I would never forgive my self if they went missing.

Precautions at its best is what matters at the time ❤️🤗

adaline · 21/10/2019 19:54

No way.

What if they get untied and escape?
What if someone tries to take them?
What if someone scares them/hurts them and they bite?
What if someone decided it was acceptable to pester them and annoy them?

If I couldn't take the dog in with me, I just wouldn't go in - I'd come back when the dog was safe at home or I had someone with me to hold him.

EleanorReally · 21/10/2019 19:56

no, i used to with my previous dog but know more now about terrible things that can happen

Bonkersblond · 21/10/2019 20:11

No, some shops in our town are becoming more accommodating in allowing dogs in, Whitestuff keep biscuits behind the till, Fatface welcomed her in the other day and our John Lewis home allows them!

carly2803 · 21/10/2019 20:48

no. and i openly judge those who do.

Takemyhand · 21/10/2019 20:50

I’d be far too worried about her being nicked or starting a fight with another dog.

She’d also whine like crazy as she whinges enough if we wait outside when one of us goes into the shop.

longwayoff · 21/10/2019 20:57

I wish. He would scream his head off and on the last occasion I tried, a small concerned crowd assembled to vainly attempt to pacify him. Too embarassing.

MymbleClement · 21/10/2019 21:20

Definitely not as I have a greyhound and there is illegal coursing going on locally.

Squashpocket · 21/10/2019 21:34

Yes, definitely if it's a local village shop and I'm popping in for milk. He's an old dog, no problem being left and loves fuss. He's very gentle and seriously nobody is going to steal an old knackered dog.

I wouldn't leave him outside Tesco while I did my weekly shop though, no.

Littlemeadow123 · 21/10/2019 22:05

Absolutely not. Someone could steal them, pester them, hurt them etc

longwayoff · 21/10/2019 22:13

Ex took my dog, different dog, not the current screamer, to work with him one day. Came back several hours later, where dog? "Oh fuck". Went back to Ealing Common where he had told her at 10am or so, to "stay" while he made a call then got back in the car, forgot about her and drove away. 6pm, poor dog, still there, thank God. Grrrr. Never trusted him with anything again.

Horehound · 21/10/2019 22:14

No way. Imagine if it got nicked. I'd never forgive myself.

Horehound · 21/10/2019 22:17

I assume OP would leave her dog...

janey15 · 21/10/2019 23:03

Basically no, for all the reasons others have mentioned. Mine are rescue mutts and I would be heartbroken if anything happened to them. However, I do leave them outside the library when I return a book as they are only about 12 feet away from the machine and we can see each other through the glass doors 🙂

Wheat2Harvest · 21/10/2019 23:09

Depends on where you live. If you live in a nice village then yes, if you live on a crime-ridden estate, then no.

But whatever you do, please don't take the dog into the shop if it's a food shop or there's a 'no dogs' sign on the door. Not everyone likes dogs.

Harvey3 · 21/10/2019 23:18

Never! Not worth the risk.
