Mushy peas

Can somebody please explain the appeal of mushy peas to me?
I was put off them when I had school meals back in the 70's. As far as I recall they are little green lumps of flour. Bleurgh.
I also dislike vinagered beetroot, fried onions, lumpy custard, blancmange and Swede in a salad because of school meals.

I love mushy peas. I bought some from Aldi recently and they turned my piss green.

Maybe I should try them. I mean we are talking something like 40 years since I tried them, so there's a possibility they may have changed.
But WHAT IS THE APPEAL? What's wrong with bog standard peas?

I’m with you - as a 70’s school child I was often last into the playground as I was made to eat mushy peas. Its the smell (still gets me) and that floury, suck all the moisture from your mouth taste. Banned in my house !

They are a thing of beauty with battered cod & chip 😋

They are nicer than bog standard peas imo

No, you are doing it wrong, they are marrowfat peas where I come from. They used to need soaking overnight with bread soda, but they can be bought now with "no soak". Just bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes, then serve.

OMG they are the food of the gods, with butter and black pepper added, sorry OP, try a few varieties now. One of your X a day too!

Love them, have to be tinned or chip shop, loads of vinegar and salt.

@Shoobydo123. My sentiments exactly. Our dinner lady was called Mrs roof and she used to hover over your shoulder like a vulture.

I dunno, but those I use are in a packet from Aldi, not a tin. They are dried, and need to be brought to boil then simmered for a few minutes. Gorgeous!

I think the tinned/canned versions are not a patch on the dried marrowfats. But TBH I don't know if the tinned variety ARE actually marrowfats, but am guessing they might be! I never use the tinned variety anymore, but that's just me. Each to their own and all that!

Love mushy peas, Batchelors is my brand of choice. Cheap white bread liberally spread with proper butter, hot mushy peas next and then fish fingers mmmmmmmm

Top tip - add a teaspoon of sugar to your tin of mushy peas, it takes the school dinner taste away and turns it into a borderline dessert Grin. Seriously though, try it!
