Mushy peas

Can somebody please explain the appeal of mushy peas to me?
I was put off them when I had school meals back in the 70's. As far as I recall they are little green lumps of flour. Bleurgh.
I also dislike vinagered beetroot, fried onions, lumpy custard, blancmange and Swede in a salad because of school meals.

I grew up in Bury, the home of the black pudding and mushy peas from the chippy... 😂

I remember my DM soaking the marrowfat ones overnight. I just buy the tinned ones. Even eat some straight out of the tin before I heat them up. Delicious.

I'm with OP. Horrible horrible things. And also that vinegar beetroot..

People underestimate the effect of bad school dinners on a psyche. I can and will eat practically anything, but mushy peas and anything in vinegar make me shudder.

Oh. Vinegar beetroot butties. Or just on the side of a salad / picnic type tea. Delicious.

@DartmoorChef - Bury black pudding is the absolute BEST.

Mushy peas are wonderful. They're not the same as bog standard tinned peas and they're a totally different animal from frozen peas. I buy them tinned and we have them with fish and chips.

Can't have faggots without mushy peas and loads of vinegar...in a batch! ( that's a cob or roll for you non-Midlanders)

Mmm, mushy peas. With fish and chips.
With cold gammon. Out of the tin with a spoon.

Yum.

Even better with vinegar on.

JumpingFrogs · 16/10/2019 18:34

Hadn't had them for years. Love them, so recently got some from the chip shop. Something in them made my lips and tongue go tingly and numb (tartrazine maybe ?) so now looking for a recipe so I can avoid the additives...

Who puts swede in a salad 🤷‍♀️🤢

Gingaaarghpussy · 16/10/2019 20:17

@TapDanceJazzHands
My primary school Grin along with a tonne of cress bleugh!
I did say it was in the 70's. When spam fritters were still about and evil dinner ladies made you eat your food even if you didn't like it.
